The client rejected any GET, DELETE or HEAD request that carried a content-length header and ended with its HEADERS frame. It destroyed the stream with NGHTTP2_PROTOCOL_ERROR before the request reached the wire. Node's client sends the request as given. The server compares the declared length with the body it received and resets the stream only on a mismatch. Bun's server already does that check. Remove the client-side check. A bodiless DELETE with content-length: 0 now gets the server's response, as in node.

LGTM — a pure deletion of a client-side pre-check that the receiving side already owns, with a test that pins the new contract.
What was reviewed:
- Confirmed the server-side enforcement the PR leans on exists at src/runtime/api/bun/h2/connection.rs:1388-1399 (declared length compared to received bytes on END_STREAM, gated on
is_server), and h2-conformance.test.ts:998-1016 already covers the mismatch → PROTOCOL_ERROR path. - Traced the vendored upstream test/js/node/test/parallel/test-http2-multi-content-length.js request 3 (GET with content-length 1): it still gets ERR_HTTP2_STREAM_ERROR / NGHTTP2_PROTOCOL_ERROR, now from the server RST, and the server 'stream' handler still fires exactly once, so its mustCall counts hold.
- Checked the new test's Promise.race over the shared sessionError promise — each race attaches a rejection handler, so no dangling unhandled rejection; cleanup shape matches the neighboring tests in the file.
Extended reasoning...
The change touches only src/js/node/http2.ts (removes the rejectNoPayloadContentLengthNT helper, the content-length header scan, and the early-return block that synthesized an id-less stream for GET/HEAD/DELETE with endStream and a content-length header) plus one new test in test/js/node/http2/node-http2.test.js. No security-sensitive surface is involved: the deleted code was a client-side validation stricter than Node's, and the invariant it guarded is still enforced by Bun's h2 server in connection.rs and by any nghttp2 peer. The diff is 29 deleted lines with no replacement logic, no remaining references to the removed identifiers, and the queued-request and abort paths are untouched. The decisive facts for approval were the small self-contained scope, the existing server-side check and conformance coverage, and that the vendored upstream multi-content-length test still holds under the new behavior by the same mechanism Node relies on.

LGTM — a clean removal of a client-side check that Node's client does not have, with a regression test that asserts exact outcomes.
What was reviewed:
- Grepped
src/js/node/http2.tsfor leftovers of the removed path:rejectNoPayloadContentLengthNTandrejectContentLengthOnNoPayloadhave no remaining references;kHeadRequest, streamErrorFromCodeandNoPayloadMethodskeep their other callers, and no comment near the hunk still describes the old rejection. - Checked the Node contract against the vendored
test/js/node/test/parallel/test-http2-multi-content-length.js: its GET +content-length: 1case expectsERR_HTTP2_STREAM_ERROR/NGHTTP2_PROTOCOL_ERRORas an async stream error, which is the receive-side nghttp2 check, so the wire-then-reset behavior matches. - Confirmed Bun's server enforces the declared length on END_STREAM (
src/runtime/api/bun/h2/connection.rs~1388-1399), so the test'sDELETE+"5"case fails at the server rather than passing vacuously; the three"0"cases fail on stock bun at the first assertion. - Test wiring: the session
errorrace andclose-driven resolution cover the failure paths; theexpect(seen)check proves the"5"request never reached the handler.
Extended reasoning...
The PR deletes 29 lines from ClientHttp2Session.request() in src/js/node/http2.ts (the client-side content-length rejection for GET/HEAD/DELETE with END_STREAM) and adds one bun:test file, test/js/node/http2/node-http2-request-content-length.test.ts. It touches the node:http2 compat layer but no auth, crypto, or input-parsing surface; the removed code was a stricter-than-Node client check, and the server-side enforcement in connection.rs remains. No CODEOWNERS entry covers the changed files, no third-party review requested changes, and the only change since the prior run is the test switching from node:test to bun:test. The small, self-contained scope and the strong exact-value assertions decided approve; the debug build was not available in this environment, so verification was by reading the code and the vendored Node test rather than executing the suite.
Fixes #44202
Problem
session.request({ ":method": "DELETE", "content-length": "0" })fails withERR_HTTP2_STREAM_ERROR(rstCode1,NGHTTP2_PROTOCOL_ERROR). The server never sees the request. Node v26.3.0 answers 200.GETandHEADfail the same way.ClientHttp2Session.request(src/js/node/http2.ts:6177-6187and6212-6222). It destroys anyGET,DELETEorHEADstream that carries acontent-lengthheader and ends with its HEADERS frame, before a stream id exists.Fix
rejectNoPayloadContentLengthNThelper. The client sends the request as given.content-lengthon the receiving side only: on END_STREAM it resets the stream when the declared length differs from the received body. A declared0with no body matches. Bun's server has the same check (src/runtime/api/bun/h2/connection.rs:1388-1399), soGETwithcontent-length: 1still fails withNGHTTP2_PROTOCOL_ERROR, now from the server's RST_STREAM.test/js/node/http2/node-http2-request-content-length.test.ts, one new test (stock bun fails it, node v26.3.0 passes it undernode --test). Alsonode-http2.test.js,test/js/node/test/parallel/test-http2-multi-content-length.js,h2-conformance.test.tsandnode-http2-client-close.test.ts. Self-reviewed: 4 concerns raised, 4 addressed. Background
content-lengthdoes not equal the number of DATA bytes it received. The rule is for the receiver. A sender may declarecontent-length: 0on an empty message.NoPayloadMethods(http2.ts:1871) still defaultsendStreamtotrueforGET,DELETEandHEAD. Only the rejection goes away.Downsides
GET,DELETEorHEADwith a wrongcontent-lengthnow fails after a round trip to the server, with the same error code, instead of on the next tick. Node behaves the same way.rejectNoPayloadContentLengthNTand every test undertest/js/node/http2/and the vendoredtest-http2-*.jsfiles that mentioncontent-length.Notes
Repro (
DELETE,GET,HEADwithcontent-length: "0", thenDELETEwith"5"), node v26.3.0 and this branch give the same output:Stock bun 1.4.3 fails all four before the request reaches the wire.
Open PRs that touch the same block:
String(value) !== "0"and adds the test "content-length: 0 on a GET is sent as is". After this PR merges, that hunk and that test can go on rebase.{ ":method": "HEAD", "content-length": "1" }in arejectedAtSendTimelist. Its tests still hold (the server rejects that request), only the comment is stale.A sibling of the same class stays: the
:pathpre-check (http2.ts:6173-6193on this branch) rejects control characters and spaces on the client, and Bun's server does not validate:pathat all. That needs server-side validation inconnection.rsfirst, so it is a separate change. The test has its own file, like
node-http2-client-close.test.ts. It runs in 2 s on the debug build and undernode --test.node-http2.test.jshas 400 tests with 5 s timeouts (should receive goaway,DATA payload survives its ArrayBuffer being detached) that time out under load on the debug build, so a run of that file is not a reliable proof. The
node:http2client rejected any request that ended with its HEADERS frame while carrying acontent-lengthheader, resetting the stream with a local PROTOCOL_ERROR before it ever reached the server, and the check only fired on methods like DELETE where the client did not otherwise expect a body. The fix removes that client-side rejection so the header is sent as given, leaving the server to compare the declared length against the received body as RFC 9113 section 8.1.1 specifies. A zero value now matches the empty body and succeeds, while a nonzero declared length with no body is stil…
