…dates callback
pushStream() validated callback before it checked for a disabled push or a
nested push. With push disabled, pushStream({}, {}, 1) threw
ERR_INVALID_ARG_TYPE where node throws ERR_HTTP2_PUSH_DISABLED. On a pushed
stream it threw ERR_INVALID_ARG_TYPE where node throws
ERR_HTTP2_NESTED_PUSH.
The checks now run in node's order: disabled push, nested push, callback.
callback goes through validateFunction().
ERR_HTTP2_NESTED_PUSH moves from a hand-built Error to the ErrorCode table.
…n into the nested-push test The ErrorCode-table version of ERR_HTTP2_NESTED_PUSH has no own code property, so Object.keys(err) and JSON.stringify(err) lose the code that main and node expose. The error stays hand-built. The test for callback before options passed without the fix. Its assertion moves into the nested-push test, which fails without the fix.

LGTM — the follow-up commits address what I raised earlier (the nested-push error stays hand-built with an own code, and the callback-before-options pin now lives inside a test that fails on the base branch), and the remaining three-line reorder in pushStream() matches node's check order.
What was reviewed:
- Compared the new order (session destroyed → nested push →
pushAllowed→validateFunction) against node'spushStream; the only difference (nested beforepushAllowed) is pre-existing and pinned by the vendoredtest-http2-server-push-stream.js. - Checked
validateFunctionthrows the sameERR_INVALID_ARG_TYPE("callback", "function", value)as the removedtypeofcheck, so valid-callback and normal-stream behavior is unchanged. - Read both new tests: every failure event on server, session, client and request is wired to
reject, the push-disabled precondition is asserted (pushAllowed: false), and errors are matched on exact class/code/message.
Extended reasoning...
Overview
The PR moves the callback type check in ServerHttp2Stream.prototype.pushStream (src/js/node/http2.ts:3200-3221) from before the nested-push and pushAllowed checks to after them, replacing the hand-written typeof test with validateFunction(callback, "callback") from internal/validators (already imported at line 418 and used at six sibling sites in the file). Two tests are added to test/js/node/http2/node-http2.test.js: one drives a push-disabled client (settings: { enablePush: false }) through four doubly-invalid calls and expects ERR_HTTP2_PUSH_DISABLED for each; the other uses the existing pushedHeaderBlocks helper to check that on a request stream the callback error wins over a bad options, and that on a pushed stream (including after push.end()) every variant yields ERR_HTTP2_NESTED_PUSH, with only the one valid call reserving stream id 2.
Security risks
None. The change only reorders synchronous argument validation in a server-side API; no new input is parsed, no allocation or side effect happens before validation (the header spread and native getNextStream() call remain after all checks), and no trust boundary or credential handling is involved.
Level of scrutiny
Low-to-moderate: it is a node-compat ordering fix in built-in JS, three lines of production change, in a well-tested module. I compared the resulting order to node's pushStream (pushAllowed → nested push → callback shift → validateFunction → assertIsObject(options) → assertIsObject(headers)). Bun's order differs only in checking nested-push before pushAllowed, which was already the case on the base branch and is deliberate: bun's pushAllowed includes !this.closed, and a pushed stream flips closed as soon as its last DATA frame settles, so checking pushAllowed first would turn the vendored nested-push assertion into ERR_HTTP2_PUSH_DISABLED. The leading session == null || session.destroyed guard also yields ERR_HTTP2_PUSH_DISABLED, consistent with node's pushAllowed getter returning false for a destroyed session. The one behavioral drift the PR text names (a bad callback after the request ended now reports PUSH_DISABLED in a window where node reports INVALID_ARG_TYPE) stems from the pre-existing early closed flag, not from this reorder, and this reorder also fixes the explicit stream.close() case in node's favor.
Other factors
Since my previous review the author pushed two commits: da2b4a17 reverted the ERR_HTTP2_NESTED_PUSH migration to the ErrorCode table (keeping code as an own enumerable property) and folded the callback-before-options assertion into the nested-push test so the test as a whole fails on the base branch; 75518ca0 trimmed the comments. Both new tests wire error/sessionError/client/request errors to reject, race listening against the failure promise, use port: 0, and clean up in finally. The push-disabled test asserts pushAllowed: false in the same toEqual, so the precondition is verified rather than assumed. I was not able to execute the test file in this environment (no debug build present, test execution not permitted), so the pass/fail claims rest on reading the code and the author's statement; given the small, mechanical nature of the change and that validateFunction produces the byte-identical error to the removed check, I am confident in the approval. The changed files are not covered by .github/CODEOWNERS.

LGTM — a three-line reorder in pushStream() that puts the callback check after the nested-push and pushAllowed checks, matching node's order, with the earlier round of feedback addressed in the follow-up commits.
What was reviewed:
- Checked the new order against node's
ServerHttp2Stream.pushStream(pushAllowed → nested push →validateFunction(callback)→ options → headers); only the pre-existing nested-before-pushAllowed swap differs, and it is now explained in a one-line comment and pinned by theafter end()case. - Confirmed the nested-push error is still hand-built with an own
codeproperty, soJSON.stringify/Object.keyskeep it as on main. - Traced both new tests on the base branch: the pushed-stream and push-disabled cases throw
ERR_INVALID_ARG_TYPEthere, so the tests are load-bearing for the reorder;pushedHeaderBlocksand the inline helper wireerror/sessionErrorto reject and release client/server infinally.
Extended reasoning...
Overview
The PR touches src/js/node/http2.ts (the ServerHttp2Stream.pushStream() guard sequence) and test/js/node/http2/node-http2.test.js. The hand-rolled typeof callback !== "function" check is removed from before the nested-push/pushAllowed checks and replaced by validateFunction(callback, "callback") (already imported and used at six other sites in the file) after them. The error class, code, and message are identical to what the removed check produced, so a call with a valid callback is unaffected; only the winner on doubly-invalid input changes, and it now matches node v26 for the four cases the tests cover.
Security risks
None. The change does not alter parsing, header handling, or the native parser interaction — it only reorders synchronous argument/state checks that all throw before any stream id is reserved or any frame is emitted. The tests assert the negative contract that only the one valid call reserved a push stream.
Level of scrutiny
Low-to-moderate. The diff is small and mechanical, but it is Node-compat ordering work where the check order decides which error wins, so I compared it against node's pushStream (pushAllowed → kID % 2 === 0 → validateFunction(callback) → assertIsObject(options) → assertIsObject(headers)). The only deviation, nested push ahead of pushAllowed, was already on main and is justified by bun's early closed flag on pushed streams; the vendored test-http2-server-push-stream.js requires ERR_HTTP2_NESTED_PUSH after push.end(), so that order is the one that keeps the vendored suite green. The PR description candidly names the narrow window where a bad callback on a closed-but-not-destroyed request stream now reports ERR_HTTP2_PUSH_DISABLED rather than ERR_INVALID_ARG_TYPE; that window is caused by the pre-existing closed timing bug that already misroutes valid pushStream() calls on main, and the correct fix for it is in markStreamClosed, not a special case in this guard chain.
Other factors
The follow-up commits addressed the prior round of comments: the nested-push error remains a plain Error with an own enumerable code (avoiding the $ERR_* prototype-code regression), and the previously non-load-bearing "callback before options" assertion is folded into the nested-push test, which fails on base because push.pushStream({}, {}, 1) threw ERR_INVALID_ARG_TYPE there. Both new tests use port: 0, wire error/sessionError/request error to reject, and release the client and server in finally. The changed files have no CODEOWNERS entry, the hunt exited on dry_streak with no findings, and the PR's evidence block shows the tests failing on 1.4.3 and passing on the branch.
Problem
ServerHttp2Stream#pushStream()validatescallbackbefore it checks whether it can push. When the client disabled push, stream.pushStream({}, {}, 1)andstream.pushStream({})throwERR_INVALID_ARG_TYPE. node v26.3.0 throwsERR_HTTP2_PUSH_DISABLED.ERR_INVALID_ARG_TYPE. node throwsERR_HTTP2_NESTED_PUSH.pushStream(src/js/node/http2.ts:3211). No user reported this. A comparison of bun and node output on doubly invalid calls found it.Fix

Neither touches the lines of this PR (git merge-tree). The same holds for node:http2: default a push's :authority from the request's host #43298, node:http2: keep received headers out of sentHeaders #43206 and node:http2: normalize outbound header objects like node #41614.assertIsObject(options, "options")at the point where this PR insertsvalidateFunction(callback, "callback"). Keep both, with thecallbackcheck first. The second new test fails on the other order: it callspushStream({}, "x", 1)and expects thecallbackerror.settings()on both session classes andsetTimeout()on both server classes. This PR does not touch them. One order difference from node stays
node reads
pushAllowedbefore the nested-push check. Here a pushed stream reportsclosedas soon as its last DATA frame settles (_final). SopushAllowedis false right afterpush.end(data). node still throwsERR_HTTP2_NESTED_PUSHat that point, and the vendoredtest-http2-server-push-stream.jsasserts it. So the nested-push check stays first, as on main. The second new test pins this case. Two combined states still differ from node because of this order: a pushed stream after an explicit
close(), and a pushed stream after the client turned push off. Both reportERR_HTTP2_NESTED_PUSHwhere node reportsERR_HTTP2_PUSH_DISABLED. main behaves the same. They can match node only whenclosedno longer flips early. One window moves away from node
The client has ended its request, and the server calls
respond()andend(data)from a later tick. bun then reportsclosed === trueat once, sopushAllowedis false. node reports both later. In that window main already refuses a validpushStream()withERR_HTTP2_PUSH_DISABLED, and node accepts it. With this PR a call with a bad callback reportsERR_HTTP2_PUSH_DISABLEDthere too, where node and main reportERR_INVALID_ARG_TYPE. The earlyclosedflag is the cause. It is a separate bug, and this PR does not change it. A special case for a stream that is closed and not destroyed is not an option. After an explicitstream.close()node reportsERR_HTTP2_PUSH_DISABLEDfor a bad callback. This PR now matches that, and main does not.The nested-push error stays hand-built
An earlier revision moved
ERR_HTTP2_NESTED_PUSHto theErrorCode.tstable. A$ERR_*error hascodeon its prototype, soObject.keys(err)andJSON.stringify(err)lose the code that main and node expose. #41737 makescodean own property for every$ERR_*error. The move can follow it.Probe against node
A script makes 21
pushStream()calls and prints the error of each. The calls run on a push-disabled stream, a normal stream and a pushed stream. bun 1.4.3 differs from node v26.3.0 on 14 lines. This build differs on 10. The 4 lines it fixes are the bad-callback and no-callback calls on the push-disabled stream and on the pushed stream.
