…already closed The engine's on_push_promise dropped the parent stream id, so the client's streamPush handler could not see that the request was already closed. close() and destroy() mark the JS stream closed at once and send the RST_STREAM from a later setImmediate, so a PUSH_PROMISE in the same read still found an open native stream. The parser now passes the parent's stream context to streamPush. The handler answers RST_STREAM(CANCEL) on the promised stream when the parent has the Closed bit, next to the maxReservedRemoteStreams refusal. This is the CLOSING arm of nghttp2_session_on_push_promise_received.

Beyond the inline findings, I also checked re-entrancy on the new rewrite_pending_push_parent cell in src/runtime/api/bun/h2_frame_parser.rs: rewrite_pending_push is cleared and the parent id is read before dispatch_with_3_extra enters JS, and rstStream from the handler only writes an outbound frame (it cannot reach on_push_promise), so the JS callback cannot clobber either cell mid-dispatch.
Extended reasoning...
Two verified findings are posted inline (unreleased engine stream entries per refused push, and refusal keyed on StreamState.Closed when close() defers its RST_STREAM to 'finish'), so human review is already signaled. This note only records the one additional concern examined from the Rust side: the dispatch_with_3_extra path passes parent_ctx (a Strong-backed JSValue or the legacy stream identifier, or undefined) into a JS handler that may call rstStream; both Cell fields are read/cleared before the handler runs and nothing the handler can call re-enters inbound frame parsing, so no reentrancy hazard on that state was found.
Findings marked 🟡 are optional suggestions and need no follow-up push.

close() with NO_ERROR holds its RST_STREAM back until 'finish' while the request body is still flushing. node has not submitted the RST_STREAM at that point, nghttp2 does not see the stream as CLOSING, and node v26.3.0 surfaces a PUSH_PROMISE on it. The Closed bit is already set in that window, so the previous check refused that push. StreamState.RstScheduled is set where close(), destroy() and a pending close schedule the RST_STREAM through setImmediate. streamPush refuses on that bit. A new case covers the close() that waits for 'finish'.

Beyond the inline finding, I also checked the new parent argument's shape: rewrite_stream_ctx returns either the Strong-rooted JS stream (js_context/sctx), a number id, or undefined — never null — so the typeof parent === "object" gate at src/js/node/http2.ts:4990 cannot be tripped by a non-stream value, and dispatch_with_3_extra keeps the parent alive across the handler call the same way the 2-extra helper does.
Extended reasoning...
This run's inline finding covers the 'finish'-deferred close() path that Bun handles differently from node's !ending || writableFinished || code condition. Separately I traced the value the parser now hands to streamPush: rewrite_stream_ctx (h2_frame_parser.rs:3536) returns the sctx Strong, the legacy Stream::get_identifier() (its js_context Strong or a number), or UNDEFINED, so the JS-side object check cannot see null and the status bit read is on the real Http2Stream. The new dispatch_with_3_extra mirrors dispatch_with_2_extra (strong_this/context lookup, ensure_still_alive on every extra, enter_dispatch guard), so no new rooting gap was introduced. The switch from StreamState.Closed to the new RstScheduled bit addresses the earlier optional note about close(0) with a body still flushing; the earlier engine-reservation comment on the direct-write rstStream path is not touched by this push.

…e was not ending node's closeStream submits the RST_STREAM at once unless the code is NO_ERROR and the writable is ending but not finished. It reads `ending` before it calls end(). close() here left that term out, so a request that user code had not ended kept its RST_STREAM until 'finish', was not marked RstScheduled, and still got a PUSH_PROMISE that node v26.3.0 refuses. A new case covers it. The three comments this change added are shorter, and the released-parent note links its tracking issue.

The test.todo cases and #43479 carry it.
ddc516f made close() send the RST_STREAM from setImmediate when user code had not ended the writable. The reset then ran before 'finish', and the parser dropped DATA that was still in the stream's native queue. write("hello") followed by close() on a stream behind a stalled sibling lost "hello". node delivers it, and the old code kept it queued. close() sends the RST_STREAM when it did before. The PUSH_PROMISE refusal keeps node's condition through a mark: StreamState.Closing (was RstScheduled) is also set when close() runs on a writable that user code had not ended. Test cases: a blocked body from write() is refused, a blocked body from end() is surfaced, and the no-body case is a todo because the parent is already released there (#43479). The end of an exchange is now two PING round trips with an event loop turn between.
The scheduleRstStream helper goes away. The three setImmediate lines are the ones on main again, each with the mark in front of it.
h2-conformance.test.ts is the same as on main again. That file also holds cases that count live stream objects after a GC, and those fail now and then on a debug build (#42357). The new file carries its own raw server, like h2-push-refusal-staged.test.ts.
waitFor had its own 2 s timer per awaited frame, shorter than the test timeout and not scaled for a debug build. The test timeout is now the only limit. A wait that is still pending when the connection closes rejects.

The close handler rejected only the waits that were pending at that moment. A later waitFor added a wait that nothing could settle, so the case ran into the test timeout and not into the connection-closed error.
…rives nghttp2 refuses a promise when the PUSH_PROMISE frame arrives and its parent is CLOSING. The streamPush handler decided when the header block was complete, and from a JS status bit. With a CONTINUATION in a later read that gave the wrong answer in both directions, and the bit was also set where node has not submitted the RST_STREAM: close(NGHTTP2_CANCEL) inside a read, and destroy() after a close() that waits for 'finish'. The legacy Stream has a closing flag. JS sets it through setStreamClosing(id, heldBackInRead) where node has submitted the RST_STREAM by then, and end_stream and abort_stream set it when this side resets the stream. Connection::handle_push_promise asks Sink::can_accept_push, sends RST_STREAM(CANCEL) on the promised stream and decodes the block for HPACK sync only (BlockDisposition::Ignored). StreamState.Closing, the fifth streamPush argument, dispatch_with_3_extra and rewrite_pending_push_parent are gone. The test file uses node:test and node:assert, and spawns node on itself under Bun. 16 of 16 cases pass on node v26.3.0.
…2-refuse-push-on-closed-parent # Conflicts: # src/runtime/api/bun/h2/connection.rs
nghttp2 refuses a PUSH_PROMISE before it counts the promised stream as processed (last_proc_stream_id). The rows that expect a refusal now close the session and check that the Last-Stream-ID of its GOAWAY is 0, on node and on Bun.
…itself on_stream_reset runs for a RST_STREAM from the peer and for a stream error that the engine answers with RST_STREAM. It closed the stream and did not set the closing flag. On a socket the teardown of the JS stream sets the flag one tick later, before the next frame. Over a JS transport no tick runs between the frames of a chunk, so a PUSH_PROMISE later in the same chunk was accepted. node refuses it in both cases. Four new rows: the server resets the request, or the response block is malformed, each over a socket and over a duplexPair(). The GOAWAY check of the last commit is gone. Bun's GOAWAY does not carry a peer-stream mark yet, so the check could not fail on Bun.

Problem
node:http2client surfaces a pushed stream whose PUSH_PROMISE arrives on a request that user code already closed. node v26.3.0 sends RST_STREAM(CANCEL) and no'stream'event.close()anddestroy()send the RST_STREAM later, so the parser sees an open stream.Connection::handle_push_promise(src/runtime/api/bun/h2/connection.rs) never checks the parent.Fix
Streamgets aclosingflag. JS sets it (setStreamClosing) where node has submitted the RST_STREAM. The parser sets it when it sends or receives one.handle_push_promiseasksSink::can_accept_push(parent)when the frame arrives, like nghttp2. On refusal it sends RST_STREAM(CANCEL) and decodes the block for HPACK sync only.test/js/node/http2/h2-push-promise-parent.test.ts. All 20 rows pass on node v26.3.0, 12 fail on bun 1.4.3-canary.1. close()anddestroy()make 1 more host call. A PUSH_PROMISE makes 1 more map lookup.size_of::<Stream>()stays 104 bytes. Release binary: +1.5 KB at most.Notes
Repro. A raw TCP HTTP/2 server answers the request HEADERS with one
socket.write: SETTINGS ACK, HEADERS on stream 1 (:status: 200), PUSH_PROMISE on stream 1 that promises stream 2, HEADERS and DATA END_STREAM on stream 2, DATA END_STREAM on stream 1. The client runsreq.once("response", () => req.destroy()).When the flag is set. Each rule is a node code path, and each has a row in the test file. All expected values are what node v26.3.0 does (the file runs under
node --test).close(code): when node'scloseStreamsubmits at once, which is!ending || writableFinished || code !== NO_ERRORwithendingread beforeclose()callsend()(core.js). Aclose()that waits for'finish'afterend(body)does not set it, and node surfaces the push.close(NGHTTP2_CANCEL)inside a read: node holds that RST_STREAM back there (Http2Stream::SubmitRstStream), and surfaces the push. The parser knows that it is inside a read (the engine is borrowed), sosetStreamClosingskips the mark then.destroy(): only whenclose()had not run before, because node's_destroyskipscloseStreamthen. One exception: a held-backclose(NGHTTP2_CANCEL), which node'sHttp2Stream::Destroyflushes.rstStream, anAbortSignalabort, a stream error that the engine answers (a malformed response block), a reset from the peer. Soabort()from the'response'listener now refuses a same-read push, like node. Why the check is in the engine. nghttp2 decides when the PUSH_PROMISE frame arrives, not when its header block is complete. With the CONTINUATION in a later read, a check at the end of the block is wrong in both directions: the parent can be released by then (the push is surfaced, node refuses), or be closed only after the frame (the push is refused, node surfaces). Only the engine sees the frame when it arrives.
Earlier shapes of this PR, and what was wrong with them.
streamPushhandler, with the parent's JS stream passed as a fifth handler argument. It decided at the end of the block. Measured against node v26.3.0, it fixed the same-readdestroy()andclose()rows but flipped 5 rows that matched node before: threeclose(NGHTTP2_CANCEL)rows,close()afterend(body)thendestroy(), andclose()between a PUSH_PROMISE frame and its CONTINUATION. It also misseddestroy()andclose()before a PUSH_PROMISE whose block ends in a later read. The self-review found this. I reproduced each row before the rework.close()itself. The reset then ran before'finish'and the parser dropped DATA still in the stream's native queue:write("hello"); close()behind a stalled sibling stream lost "hello" (node delivers it, bun 1.4.3 keeps it queued). An independent reviewer pass flagged it, I measured it, and 4c45426 restored the timing. node:http2: close() on a writable that was not ended waits for 'finish' before RST_STREAM, node sends it at once #43588 tracks the difference from node.Self-review. Its verdict was "wanted, in a different shape", with "rework in place" as the first step. The concerns that it listed, and what this push does:
destroy()orclose()before a PUSH_PROMISE whose block ends in a later read was still surfaced. Fixed (the engine decides at the frame), has a row.node:testandnode:assert, and under Bun it spawnsnode --teston itself, likenode-http2-client-close.test.ts.Closingcomment claimed node parity while the code diverged. The bit is gone.StreamStatebit1 << 9is claimed by other open PRs (node:http2: do not reset a stream the native layer already closed #43539, node:http2: send RST_STREAM when a server stream is reset #33380, node:http2: destroy streams before the native sweep in session teardown #42717). This PR does not use aStreamStatebit any more.'trailers','altsvc'and a spurious'error'still reach a request that user code closed, and node:http2: emit no header events on a client stream that user code closed #43525 guardsstreamHeaderswithstream.closed, which differs from node in theclose()-after-end(body)row. Not in this PR. Theclosingflag is the state those handlers need, and the review proposed it as a second PR.todorows (close()on a request with no body that user code had not ended) and theAbortSignalrow pass now, because the native flag is still there after the native reset. Two rows remaintodo.BlockDisposition::Ignoredhas the same name and arms as in #43612, which is open, so the two merge with a trivial conflict. What is left, and why. These reach the
!streamarm of the nghttp2 check, and node refuses them: a PUSH_PROMISE that arrives after the client's RST_STREAM reached the server (the parser has evicted the stream), a parent the peer reset, a parent that completed.can_accept_pushanswerstruefor a stream it does not know. Refusing there makestest-http2-respond-file-push.jshang, because Bun's server writes PUSH_PROMISE after the parent's END_STREAM whenend()runs beforepushStream():#43479 tracks that (#43578 is an open fix for the server order).
Found on the way, not changed here. #43482 (the engine keeps its entry for a promised stream that the client resets, and evicting it directly makes
session.close()hang). #43481 (idle, even and half-closed (remote) parents must be connection errors, #43585 is open). #43514 (close()on a pushed client stream emits'error'). #43588 (whenclose()sends its RST_STREAM). #44450 (themaxReservedRemoteStreamsrefusal is still in JS: it counts a pushed stream until it closes, where node stops when the pushed response HEADERS arrive, and it runs after the engine reserved the stream. The limit fitsSink::can_accept_push). #44456 (the client emits'response'and'stream'inside the frame dispatch, node onprocess.nextTick). #44479 (close()on a request that was rejected before it got a stream id throws an uncaught "Invalid stream id", also on bun 1.4.2). A PUSH_PROMISE after the client sent GOAWAY is still surfaced, and #43612 (open) discards it in this same function. #44530 (a PUSH_PROMISE that arrives before the server ACKed the client'senablePush: falseends the session with a connection error. node cancels only the promised stream then. It is another arm of the same nghttp2 check and can use the cancel path of this PR, with the acknowledged value of the setting tracked in the engine).Over a JS transport. With
createConnectionand a stream that is not a socket, the client parses a whole chunk inside one JS call, so no tick runs between its frames. Two effects:on_stream_resetthe push was surfaced over aduplexPair()(pushedStreams: 1), with it the result is node's (0, RST_STREAM(2, CANCEL)). Two rows run over aduplexPair().destroy()in the'response'listener with the PUSH_PROMISE later in the same chunk. node surfaces the push, this branch cancels it. node emits'response'withprocess.nextTick, so there its listener runs after the whole chunk and after the PUSH_PROMISE was accepted. Bun emits the event inside the frame dispatch, so the request is already destroyed when the PUSH_PROMISE is parsed. The rule is the same, the order of user code is not. node:http2 client emits 'response' and 'stream' inside the frame dispatch, node on process.nextTick (differs over a JS transport) #44456 tracks the emission order, with a measurement that does not need this PR. Before this PR Bun surfaced that push, like node.A refused promise is not a processed stream. nghttp2 returns from the refusal before it sets
last_proc_stream_id. node v26.3.0 afterdestroy()and a refused push:session.state.lastProcStreamIDis 0 and the GOAWAY ofsession.close()names stream 0. Bun's GOAWAY does not carry a peer-stream mark yet, so a test cannot check this on Bun today (a Bun client's GOAWAY names 0 after a surfaced push too). #37588 (open) adds that mark to the engine, in the lines ofhandle_push_promisedirectly above thecan_accept_pushcheck. When both are in, the mark must not rise for a cancelled promise. #44450 records this with the node numbers.Where the tests are. A new file with its own small raw server, like
h2-push-refusal-staged.test.tsnext to it.h2-conformance.test.tsalso holds cases that count live stream objects after a GC, and on a debug build under load they fail in about 1 of 10 full-file runs, with thehttp2.jsof main as well (#42357). This PR does not change that file.Numbers in Downsides.
