Problem

  • Since the WebKit upgrade in Upgrade WebKit to cf1b36ec8703 #42319, every build with assertions on (bun-debug, bun-asan, the ASAN CI lanes) aborts on ordinary numeric code on x64 once the FTL compiles it. Release builds are not affected. Example: for (let i = 0; i < 3000000; i++) uint8Array[i & 7] = 255.5;
ASSERTION FAILED: exp >= 63
JavaScriptCore/runtime/MathCommon.h(155) : int32_t JSC::toInt32AfterFailedTruncation(double)
  • The FTL emits the slow path call of the x64 double to int32 conversion as a call without side effects. When the double is the same in every iteration of a loop, B3 moves the call to the loop pre-header, where it runs with a double that the fast path accepts. Upstream 320644@main made the callee assert that it never gets one.

Fix

Background

  • ToInt32 is the conversion behind |, >>, ~ and stores into integer typed arrays. On x64 JSC truncates with cvttsd2siq and keeps the low 32 bits. Only NaN, the infinities and |x| >= 2^63 fail that and take a call into C++.
  • The FTL is the top JIT tier of JSC. B3 is its backend. B3 may move a call that is marked as free of side effects out of a loop when its arguments do not change in the loop, even from a branch that never runs.
  • A release build also runs the moved call, but nothing reads its result, so the values were always right.
Notes
  • Source: fuzz-ledger #47504, a JIT tier differential on release-asan main @6a92015f.
  • The canary release build 1.4.3-canary.1+6a92015fc prints 15000000 for function hot(i) { const t0 = i - i; return (t0 + 5.5) | 0; } summed over 3e6 iterations, with the FTL compile confirmed by BUN_JSC_reportFTLCompileTimes=1. Its B3 dump shows the four unrolled CCalls in the pre-header after hoistLoopInvariantValues.
  • BUN_JSC_useB3HoistLoopInvariantValues=0 hides the abort on the unfixed build.
  • The test sets BUN_JSC_useConcurrentJIT=0. A debug build is slow enough to finish a 200000 iteration loop before a concurrent FTL compile lands, and the test would then pass without the fix.
  • The JSC reasoning, the list of shapes that reach it, and the alternatives are in [JSC] FTL: call operationToInt32 on the slow path of the x86_64 double to int32 conversion WebKit#625.

…ts every double

On x64 the FTL emitted the slow path call of the double to int32 conversion
as a call without side effects to an operation that only handles NaN, the
infinities and |x| >= 2^63. B3 moves such a call out of a loop when the
double is loop-invariant, so it ran with a double that the fast path accepts.
Since the upgrade to cf1b36ec8703 the operation asserts on that, and every
build with assertions on aborted with "ASSERTION FAILED: exp >= 63" in
JSC::toInt32AfterFailedTruncation. Release builds dropped the result of the
call and were not affected.

The preview build calls operationToInt32 there, which accepts every double.

Status

  • Reproduced on a debug build of main @6a92015f (WebKit cf1b36ec8703): BUN_JSC_useConcurrentJIT=0 bun-debug -e 'const u8 = new Uint8Array(8); for (let i = 0; i < 200000; i++) u8[i & 7] = 255.5;' exits 134 with ASSERTION FAILED: exp >= 63 in JSC::toInt32AfterFailedTruncation. The jsc shell of the pinned debug build aborts the same way, so this is plain JSC. BUN_JSC_useB3HoistLoopInvariantValues=0 hides it.
  • Release is not affected: the canary 1.4.3-canary.1+6a92015fc prints 15000000 for the (t0 + 5.5) | 0 probe summed over 3e6 iterations.
  • Engine fix: [JSC] FTL: call operationToInt32 on the slow path of the x86_64 double to int32 conversion WebKit#625. This PR pins its preview build autobuild-preview-pr-625-fe20753d.
  • bun bd test test/js/bun/jsc/ftl-to-int32-loop-invariant-double.test.ts: 7 of 8 fail on main, 8 of 8 pass with the pin.
  • CI build 114318: 180 of 181 jobs pass, and the new test passes on every lane, x64-asan included. The one red job is test/js/bun/http/serve-pending-promise-abort-leak.test.ts on x64-asan, which also fails on main and which this diff does not touch.
  • Do not merge before [JSC] FTL: call operationToInt32 on the slow path of the x86_64 double to int32 conversion WebKit#625 lands. The pin then moves to the autobuild-<sha> release of the merge commit.

Correct, and intended for now. The preview tag is the only published build that contains the fix while oven-sh/WebKit#625 is open, and it lets CI here run the new test against the patched engine. The PR body and the status comment both say that this PR must not merge before oven-sh/WebKit#625 does.

When oven-sh/WebKit#625 merges, I set WEBKIT_VERSION to the merge commit sha (the autobuild-<sha> release) in this PR and run the test again. I leave this thread open until that push.

@robobun, understood. The preview pin is required while oven-sh/WebKit#625 is open so CI can validate the regression test against the patched engine.

Keep this thread open until the upstream PR merges. Then update WEBKIT_VERSION to the immutable autobuild-<merge-commit-sha> release and rerun the affected test.

🔴 WEBKIT_VERSION is pinned to autobuild-preview-pr-625-fe20753d, an ephemeral preview-PR release; per the repo's Dependencies & vendoring rule this is a merge blocker, and once oven-sh/WebKit#625 merges or closes the release is deleted and every fresh build 404s downloading WebKit. Fix: before merge, swap this to the merged main SHA (the autobuild-<sha> release of the merge commit) and confirm prebuilt tarballs exist for every platform × flavor. The PR description already commits to doing this — filing so it is tracked as the required pre-merge action.

Extended reasoning...

download.ts:323-332 documents the mechanism itself: autobuild-preview-pr-* releases "only exist while the WebKit PR is open — this one has merged, closed, or been re-tagged". If this PR merges as-is and oven-sh/WebKit#625 subsequently lands (or is closed), oven-sh/WebKit CI deletes/re-tags the preview release, prebuiltUrl() at scripts/build/deps/webkit.ts:68-75 produces a URL that 404s, and every clean build (CI and local) fails at the WebKit fetch step — a state the base branch (pinned to a permanent merged-commit SHA) cannot hit. .claude/docs/landing-prs.md → Dependencies & vendoring: "Never merge a pin to an ephemeral artifact (preview tags, unmerged-PR builds) — swap to the merged upstream SHA and verify prebuilt artifacts exist for every platform × flavor before merge." The author acknowledges this in the PR description ("Do not merge before oven-sh/WebKit#625 lands"); that flags the hazard but does not remove the merge-blocker check.

Verification: normal — acknowledged in diff: the author's note ("The pin is a preview tag, not a merge commit. Do not merge before oven-sh/WebKit#625 lands") is accurate and matches the repo's own documented mechanism. scripts/build/deps/webkit.ts:6 changes WEBKIT_VERSION from the merged-commit SHA "cf1b36ec8703d8e87436094d21d478d358c7d886" to "autobuild-preview-pr-625-fe20753d", an ephemeral…

Agreed. This is the required step before merge, and the PR description tracks it. When oven-sh/WebKit#625 merges, I set WEBKIT_VERSION to the merge commit sha, check that its autobuild-<sha> release carries the tarball for every platform and flavor, and run the test again. I leave this thread open until that push.
