I reviewed this PR and didn't find any bugs. Because it threads VM-lifecycle state (VmHandle) into NodeFS and changes the sync-binding error path for every fs.*Sync call under a stopping VM, a human look would still be worthwhile.
Checked: Ticket::handle() is a plain Arc::clone (uncounted, so no deadlock risk on close_and_wait); script_allowed() is a SeqCst atomic read safe from the pool thread; the new vm_handle field sits after sync_error_buf so the #[repr(C)] offset-0 alignment invariant is preserved; the removed pre-fstat args.aborted() check is subsumed by the new per-chunk check in the pre-stat loop; and the abort_err() sentinel returned on VM-stop is never observed (async completion is dropped unrun, sync path is converted to Stopped::throw).
Extended reasoning...
Overview
Fixes worker.terminate() hanging forever when the worker is inside fs.readFileSync / fs.promises.readFile of a FIFO or device (no EOF). Adds Ticket::handle() to mint an uncounted VmHandle from a pool job's ticket, stores an Option<VmHandle> on NodeFS, and has both read-until-EOF loops (the pre-stat 256 KiB read and the growing tail) give up at the next chunk once script_allowed() is false. The sync binding's run_sync gains an Err(_) if !vm.script_allowed() arm that throws Stopped instead of the errno. jsc_hooks.rs's create_node_fs switches to ..NodeFS::default() to pick up the new field. Five new tests: four worker-terminate FIFO cases (sync/async × 192 KiB/512 KiB) and one AbortSignal-between-chunks FIFO case.
Security risks
None. No untrusted input parsing, no auth/crypto, no boundary crossings beyond the existing thread-safe VmHandle gate read.
Level of scrutiny
High. This is worker-VM teardown interacting with a hot node:fs path. The run_sync change applies to every sync fs operation, not just readFile — any sync fs error while the VM is stopping now becomes a TerminationException rather than the errno. That's argued as correct (the script is being unwound; the trap would do the same at the next safepoint), but it's a cross-cutting behavior change a maintainer should sign off on. The choice to store VmHandle on NodeFS rather than plumb it as a parameter to read_file_with_options is a small design decision.
Other factors
The tests are well-constructed: holding both FIFO ends via openSync(fifo, "r+") avoids the open(2)-blocks-without-writer hazard; the oversized blocking write proves the reader is inside the loop before terminate()/abort() is called; the setInterval feed keeps read() returning so the stop check can fire. skipIf(isWindows) is correct. I verified Completion::ticket() exists (src/jsc/job.rs:415), VirtualMachine::script_allowed() delegates to the handle, and Stopped::throw is designed for exactly this beneath-script crossing. No prior review comments to address.

Beyond the inline nit, I checked that VmHandle::script_allowed() is a plain SeqCst atomic load safe from the pool thread (Shared is Send + Sync), that Completion::ticket() already exposes the job's ticket so done.ticket().handle() is well-formed, and that Stopped::throw is the documented crossing for turning a closed gate into the TerminationException beneath script — the run_sync arm follows that contract.
Extended reasoning...
The PR wires a thread-safe VmHandle into NodeFS so the read-until-EOF loops can observe worker termination between chunks. I verified the off-thread safety of the new check (VmHandle is Arc<Shared> with Send + Sync, script_allowed() is an atomic load), the existence of Completion::ticket() in job.rs, and that Stopped::throw is the documented mechanism for this case in event_loop.rs. The one finding posted inline is a REVIEW.md-style note about sibling chunk-loops (write_file, SSLConfig.rs) sharing the class — pre-existing and non-blocking. The change touches VM-termination lifecycle and the run_sync errno→termination mapping is a design choice worth a maintainer's glance, so deferring rather than approving.

I reviewed this PR and found no bugs. My earlier note about sibling chunk-loops was addressed in 61f2013 (SSLConfig now carries the VM handle) and the remaining bounded siblings are named in the PR notes. Because the change threads VM-lifecycle state (VmHandle) through NodeFS and adds an errno→TerminationException arm to every sync node:fs call, a human look would still be worthwhile.
What was reviewed
Ticket::handle()and off-thread use ofVmHandlein the async job — Arc-backed,script_allowed()is an atomic load, safe from the pool thread.run_sync'sErr(_) if !vm.script_allowed()arm — the gate closes only on terminate/process.exit and never reopens, so masking the errno is unobservable.- FIFO tests — both loop phases (pre-stat 192 KiB, tail 512 KiB), non-blocking writer end, fds released in

Overview
Adds an optional vm_handle: Option<VmHandle> to NodeFS so read_file_with_options's two chunk loops (the pre-stat 256 KiB read and the read-until-EOF tail) can bail out once the serving VM is stopping, not only when the caller's AbortSignal fires. Wired at three sites: the per-VM node:fs binding (JS thread), the async pool job via a new Ticket::handle() accessor, and SSLConfig::read_from_blob (added in 61f2013 after my earlier comment). The sync binding's run_sync gains a guard arm that maps any error returned under a closed gate to Stopped::throw, so the sync path unwinds with the TerminationException rather than a spurious ABORT_ERR. jsc_hooks.rs's create_node_fs singleton switches to ..NodeFS::default() (leaving vm_handle: None; it only serves mkdir_recursive). Five new tests: four worker-terminate FIFO cases (sync/async × pre-stat/tail) and one fs/promises case for AbortSignal between chunks in the pre-stat loop.
Security risks
None. No user-facing input handling, no auth/crypto/permissions surface. The VmHandle is an Arc<Shared> designed for any-thread access; script_allowed() is a SeqCst atomic load, so reading it from the pool thread is safe by design.
Level of scrutiny
High. Worker termination and cross-thread VM lifecycle are exactly the class of code where a subtle ordering or ownership mistake becomes a hang or UAF. The change itself is small and follows the established pattern (the generatePrime test right above the new tests documents the same "gives up once the worker is stopping" fix applied to another loop), but run_sync's new arm applies to every sync node:fs op and relies on the reasoning that nothing observes an errno once the gate is closed — a maintainer should confirm they agree with that scope.
Other factors
My earlier inline note (sibling loops not wired) was addressed: SSLConfig::read_from_blob is now wired, and the PR notes name the excluded bounded siblings (Blob.rs/fetch.rs cap at ~256 KiB via max_size; write_file is bounded by input length; the vm.node_fs() singleton only does mkdir_recursive). The tests are hermetic (own both FIFO ends, non-blocking writer, skipIf(isWindows)), assert exact stdout, and use a watchdog that fails with "hung" rather than a bare timeout. CI on the latest commit is still building.

State of the branch: 5699bab is the fix, 23e4fb0 reworks the worker tests (non-blocking feed, progress output, a reported hang instead of a timeout), 61f2013 adds the TLS cert/key read to the sites under the gate, the two commits in between only trim comments. All review threads are resolved. Waiting for the Buildkite run on 61f2013. |

…nated readFile and readFileSync read until EOF. A FIFO with a writer, or a device such as /dev/urandom, never reaches one, and the read loop checked only the caller's AbortSignal between chunks. worker.terminate() then waited for ever: the sync form never returned to JS for the termination to land, and the async form kept its pool job alive, which the worker's teardown waits for. NodeFS now carries the VmHandle of the VM the operation serves: the binding's own VM for the sync form, the job ticket's VM for the pool. The read loop gives up at the next chunk once that VM has stopped (script_allowed() is false), in the pre-stat read as well as in the read-until-EOF tail. The sync binding turns an error returned under a stopped VM into the TerminationException, which unwinds the script like the trap would. The pre-stat read also honours the AbortSignal between chunks now, as Node does.
…inate() The parent wrote to the FIFO with a blocking fd from its event loop. A write that waits on the worker stalls that loop, and with it the 'exit' event and the settlement of terminate(). The writes now go through a non-blocking end with EAGAIN retried, the child prints its progress, and a terminate() that does not settle is reported instead of timing out.
read_from_blob runs the same read-until-EOF loop on the JS thread with a fresh NodeFS and no size bound. Give it the VM's handle so a stopping worker is not held by a certificate file that never ends.
…terrupted read with EINTR The tail read request doubled with the buffer, so on a device the stop check between reads was one read away, and that read could be gigabytes (a 2 GiB read of /dev/urandom takes seconds). Past the stat size the loop now reads 1 MiB at a time; the buffer still grows by doubling. A read the VM's stop interrupts fails with EINTR on the read and the path, not the AbortSignal placeholder. The check also runs before open(), which blocks for good on a FIFO without a writer. Tests: /dev/urandom for both forms (at most 1 MiB per read over a window of reading, via /proc/self/io), a main-thread process.exit() under BUN_DESTRUCT_VM_ON_EXIT=1 with a device read in flight, the FIFO abort case races its rejection with a deadline so the FIFO is always closed, and the worker FIFO cases close both ends before exiting.

The VM's own NodeFS (vm.node_fs()) carried no handle, so a read through it could not see the stop. It gets the VM's handle like the binding's. The FIFO tests' write loops and the /dev/urandom window poll with a deadline instead of sleeping: the feed fails out loud if the reader stops draining, and the urandom window ends once 32 MiB were read.

I reviewed this PR and didn't find any bugs; my earlier note on sibling chunk-loops was addressed (SSLConfig wired, the bounded siblings named in the PR notes). Because it threads VM-handle state into the readFile hot path and changes the tail-read chunking under worker-termination semantics, a human look would still be worthwhile.

Overview
The PR fixes worker.terminate() hanging when a worker is inside fs.readFileSync/fs.promises.readFile of a FIFO or device that never reaches EOF. NodeFS gains an Option<VmHandle> field; a new read_interrupted() helper checks both the caller's AbortSignal and the VM's script_allowed() gate; the read loop calls it before open(), after each pre-stat read, and at the top of the main loop. Past the stat size the loop now reads in 1 MiB chunks so the stop check is never more than one chunk away. Ticket::handle() is added so the async pool job can hand its VM's uncounted handle to its NodeFS. The handle is wired at four sites (sync binding, async job, create_node_fs hook, SSLConfig::read_from_blob). Eight new Unix-only tests cover FIFO and /dev/urandom for both sync and async, at two data points (pre-stat loop vs. tail), plus process.exit() under BUN_DESTRUCT_VM_ON_EXIT=1.
Security risks
None identified. The change adds a stop check, does not relax any validation, and does not touch auth/crypto/permissions. EINTR is surfaced as an errno on the path when the VM stop interrupts a read, which is observable to user script only until the already-armed termination trap lands at the next safepoint.
Level of scrutiny
High. This touches three sensitive areas at once: (1) worker termination / VM teardown, which the file's own history shows is a repeated source of asserts and UAFs; (2) the readFile hot path, where the tail-chunk cap changes I/O granularity for anything past its stat size; (3) cross-thread state — VmHandle is now read from pool threads via script_allowed() (an AtomicU8 load, so thread-safe, but the propagation is new). The reasoning in the PR description is thorough and the tests are precise, but this is the kind of change where a maintainer familiar with the teardown wait (close_and_wait) and readFile perf characteristics should confirm the 1 MiB chunk choice and the EINTR-not-TerminationException decision.
Other factors
All prior review threads are resolved: my sibling-loop note (SSLConfig now wired; write_file/Blob.rs/fetch.rs named as bounded and excluded), CodeRabbit's jsc_hooks.rs handle propagation, and the bounded-polling test feedback. CI on 8cb0ae5 has one failure (bake/deinitialization.test.ts on Windows, a dev-server segfault on a lane where this PR's tests do not run and which the author reported as pre-existing on main). The phase variable removal is a correct cleanup — it was already write-only. I traced the 1 MiB cap against regular-file reads and confirmed no perf regression: files with size > 0 read full-capacity until total >= size, then take one 0-byte EOF read.
Problem
worker.terminate()never settles while the worker reads a FIFO or/dev/urandomwithfs.readFileSyncorfs.promises.readFile. Neither has an EOF. Node settles in a few ms.process.exit()underBUN_DESTRUCT_VM_ON_EXIT=1hangs the same way.NodeFS::read_file_with_options(src/runtime/node/node_fs.rs:7217) checks only the caller'sAbortSignalbetween chunks, never whether the VM is stopping. The sync form never returns to JS. The async form keeps its pool job alive, and the VM's teardown (src/jsc/VmHandle.rs:440) waits for that job.Fix
NodeFScarries theVmHandleof the VM it serves (the binding's own, the job ticket's via the newTicket::handle(), the TLS cert reader's). The loop gives up beforeopen()and between chunks oncescript_allowed()is false or the signal aborted. A read the stop interrupts fails withEINTRon the path.terminate(),process.exit()or teardown was requested, and never reopens. The async completion is released unrun. The sync errno reaches script only until the armed trap lands at the next safepoint.worker-terminate-lifetime.test.ts(6 new cases: FIFO and/dev/urandom, both forms) andfs/promises.test.js(2 new cases), all fail on 1.4.0. VmHandleis the thread-safe handle of a VM. Its gate,script_allowed(), closes whenterminate(),process.exit()or teardown callsstop(). ATicketis the counted form that off-thread work holds. With the fix: settles at the next chunk. 1.3.14 settled the async form in a few ms (it did not wait for pool jobs) and hung on the sync form too, so the async row is a 1.4 regression./dev/urandomon 1.4.0: the loop reads at about 400 MB/s until the 4.7 GB typed-array cap (ENOMEM) or the OOM killer. With the fix the read stops after the chunk in flight. Before the 1 MiB chunk, that in-flight read doubled with the buffer:terminate()duringfs.promises.readFile("/dev/urandom")settled after 5.5 s for a 2 GiB read (the review's probe). The sync form looked bounded only because JSC's trap signal interrupts the kernel read on the JS thread; the pool thread gets no signal. The/dev/urandomtests read/proc/self/ioand assert an average read size of at most 1 MiB over a window of reading (0 where the file is absent). They run sequentially: a build without the stop reads gigabytes before the watchdog fires.open(2)with no writer. That case cannot be interrupted without a signal, and Node hangs there too. The check beforeopen()only spares a job that the pool dequeues after the stop. Thetrap '' PIPEin the repro avoids the case.openSync(fifo, "r+")), soopen()does not block andread()never sees EOF, and feed through a non-blocking end so the parent's loop, which has to settleterminate(), never blocks on the pipe. More bytes than the pipe holds go through only once the reader drained the rest, which proves the reader is inside the loop. The two sizes (192 KiB and 512 KiB) land in the pre-stat read (first 256 KiB) and in the tail. Both ends are closed before the parent exits, so a worker still in its loop gets EOF and the exit's VM teardown (BUN_DESTRUCT_VM_ON_EXIT=1joins it) does not wait.EINTRerror into script. An earlier revision turned it into the TerminationException (Stopped::throw) so that script could not catch it.
