Problem

  • Windows only. An addon queues a uv_work_t on the loop from napi_get_uv_event_loop and resolves a promise in the after-work callback: the callback runs, the reactions never do. Node's test_callback_scope/test-resolve-async.js fails with Mismatched noop function calls. Expected exactly 1, actual 0. A worker awaiting such a promise at top level exits 13.
  • On Windows that loop is the one Bun polls. uv_run (auto_tick_active, src/runtime/jsc_hooks.rs:1215, auto_tick, :1083, and the --hot park tick_possibly_forever, src/jsc/event_loop.rs:1238) calls the addon callback directly, with no enter()/exit() around its napi calls into JS, so nothing drains after it, and a throw the callback did not check stays on the VM. The request is done, so is_event_loop_alive() (src/jsc/VirtualMachine.rs:1216) is false and the process exits. With the throw still pending, the next JS entry meets it: the beforeExit emit, the tick after the park (a panic in debug builds), or, under the wait for an entry module, no drain ever succeeds again and the process hangs.

Fix

  • EventLoop::fold_addon_uv_callbacks (event_loop.rs:1204), called on Windows after each of the three polls: an exception on the VM goes to report_error_or_terminate, which reports it as uncaught and then drains, otherwise maybe_drain_microtasks(). This is the fold on_exit already applies to cleanup hooks (VirtualMachine.rs:1718). Both helpers handle the depth themselves: under a blocking wait the drain defers to the wait's next tick().
  • A poll runs after every callback of its turn, so folding there covers every kind of handle or request an addon can put on the loop. On POSIX each callback does this at its own exit(), and napi: implement uv_async_t, uv_queue_work and uv_default_loop on posix #39652 folds the same way after each addon callback it adds there.
  • Matches Node for the reactions: its callback scope runs the checkpoint before the exit decision. For a JS throw the callback ignored, Node keeps it latched in the env and never reports it in these shapes. Bun reports it, as it does for the callbacks it dispatches itself, and a throw raised with napi_throw_* stays latched as in Node. Implementing napi_open_callback_scope and napi_make_callback as enter()/exit() would be a separate, complementary change: it would not cover addons that use neither.
  • Verified on windows-x64: the six napi_get_uv_event_loop tests in test/napi/napi.test.ts (run loop, worker resolve and reject, unchecked throw in the run loop, under the entry-module wait, and in the --hot park) and test-resolve-async.js, enabled on Windows in test_callback_scope/do.test.ts. Each fails on main, and the park test also fails on the two-site version of this branch (notes).

Background

  • EventLoop::enter()/exit() (src/jsc/event_loop.rs:283) bracket each native entry into JS. The outermost exit() runs the microtask checkpoint, and the dispatcher that invoked the callback folds what it threw with report_error_or_terminate (src/jsc/Task.rs:37). Nothing else runs microtasks or reports such throws, and JSC refuses to drain while an exception is pending.
  • The polls: auto_tick and auto_tick_active are the poll step of the run loops and blocking waits (Run::start, a worker's spin, on_before_exit, wait_for_promise, bun test). tick_possibly_forever is where --hot/--watch park once the loop is dead. On Windows all three run uv_run(UV_RUN_ONCE) on the thread's libuv loop (packages/bun-usockets/src/eventing/libuv.c:417).
  • napi_get_uv_event_loop (src/runtime/napi/napi_body.rs:2289) returns that loop on Windows, so libuv calls addon code with no Bun frame on the stack. Bun's napi_open_callback_scope and its close are no-ops (napi_body.rs:1362).
  • is_event_loop_alive() reads uv_loop_alive(), which counts the request, so the loop does live until the callback has run. Only the fold after it was missing.
Notes

Probe. A minimal addon (uv_queue_work on the napi loop, after_work_cb prints and resolves a deferred, JS attaches .then and logs beforeExit / exit), run with 1.4.0-canary.1+32e87032b on Windows x64:

[addon] uv_queue_work -> 0 alive_after=1
[addon] after_work_cb status=0
[addon] napi_resolve_deferred -> 0
[js] beforeExit, resolved = false
[js] exit, resolved = false code = 0

With this branch [js] then callback ran is printed before beforeExit, exit code 0.

Fail-before on windows-x64 (same canary, tests from this branch; the left column is what node prints and what the tests assert):

test_promise_with_uv_queue_work
resolved to after_work_cb status 0 / beforeExit bun: beforeExit / resolved to ...
test_promise_with_uv_queue_work_in_worker ["resolve"]
after_work_cb status 0 / worker exited with 0 bun: worker exited with 13
test_promise_with_uv_queue_work_in_worker ["reject"]
worker error: thrown in the reaction / exited with 1 bun: worker exited with 13
test_promise_with_uv_queue_work_callback_throws (bun-only, run loop)
  expected: uncaughtException ... / resolved to ... / beforeExit
canary: uncaughtException ... / resolved to ... (beforeExit listener lost: the
exception surfaces inside the beforeExit emit and is charged to that listener)
uv-queue-work-entry.mjs callback-throws (bun-only, entry-module wait)
  expected: uncaughtException ... / after_work_cb status 0, exit 0
canary: hangs with no output (killed after 20 s): the pending throw makes every
drain a no-op, so the wait for the entry module never ends
uv-queue-work-hot-entry.mjs under --hot (bun-only, the park)
  expected: uncaughtException ... / after_work_cb status 0, exit 0
two-site branch (debug): no stdout, `panic: a task returned Ok with a JS exception
pending` from the tick after the park; main: same class of failure
test_callback_scope/do.test.ts: (fail) test-resolve-async.js

In the first case the reaction does run late: Process__dispatchOnBeforeExit drains the nextTick queue when one exists, and that drain also runs microtasks. The upstream test and the probe never create that queue, so there the reaction is lost. The test asserts node's order, so it still fails on main once #32866 lands, and passes only with the drain in the poll step.

Intermediate state (this branch's first commit, drain only, debug build): the three reaction tests pass and the throws test fails with empty stdout and exit code 3. drainMicrotasks is a no-op over a pending exception, and the beforeExit emit then dies on JSC's assertNoException in Interpreter::executeCallImpl. That is what the exception half of the fold is for. The entry-module variant pins the auto_tick site: every caller of auto_tick follows it with a tick(), so there the drain half is redundant and only the exception half is observable. The same holds for the park: tick_possibly_forever ticks right after its poll, so its fixture has the entry fail first (an error counted keeps is_event_loop_alive() false, so the callback can only run in the park) and asserts that the throw is reported from there and that exit(0) is still reached.

Node's behavior for the unchecked throw (Linux, real libuv, node v26.3.0 running the same fixture): prints resolved to after_work_cb status 0 and beforeExit, exit 0, no uncaught exception. The throw stays in the env's latched exception and nothing rethrows it. The test is bun-only for that reason.

Out of scope. A throw the callback raises with napi_throw_* is latched in that addon's env, not on the VM. NapiEnv::surface_exception reads it for callbacks Bun dispatches itself (napi_body.rs:175), but this fold has no env to read, and a latched throw does not block the VM: it is thrown at the addon's next entry from JS, as in Node. Sweeping every env after each poll was considered and not done.

Nested waits. auto_tick also runs under blocking waits that hold an enter() (expect().toThrow on an async function, Bun.build with an async plugin). There maybe_drain_microtasks is a no-op and the wait's next tick() drains, and report_error_or_terminate reports as it does for any task folded beneath such a wait. The first version of this PR documented "no enter() open" as a precondition of the helper; it was not one, and the helper is now a safe fn.

Pass-after on windows-x64 (bun bd of this branch): napi.test.ts block of six: pass, plus a --hot run of a probe script that parks for several seconds with the fold running on every wakeup. test_callback_scope: 2 pass, 2 todo (test-async-hooks.js, and test.js on Windows, both pre-existing). worker_threads.test.ts 137 pass. spawn.test.ts 125 pass. exit-code.test.ts 5 pass. microtask, setImmediate, setTimeout, setInterval suites pass. process.test.js 158 pass, 1 fail: process.env reads are never stale after a write times out at 5 s; its first loop alone (100k process.env writes) takes 4 s of synchronous time under the debug build, before the loop polls at all, so unrelated. The fold also acts as a check that none of Bun's own paths leaves an exception pending at the poll site: these suites would now report it.

Full napi.test.ts on the same box, later in the day: 2 to 4 unrelated conversion and GC tests time out at the 5 s limit under the file's concurrency (total 65 s instead of 57 s earlier); an A/B against the build of the previous head shows the same timeouts and the same total, so that is the machine, not the change. The earlier full runs (napi.test.ts 178 and 179 pass, worker_threads 137, spawn 125, timers, exit-code, process.test.js apart from the env-JIT timeout explained above) were on the same fold with the helper in jsc_hooks.rs; the move into bun_jsc does not change the two sites they exercise.

Linux: the napi-app fixture compiles (clang), napi.test.ts passes with the six new tests skipped, test_callback_scope unchanged (todo on POSIX), test/internal/source-lints 160 pass.

Cost: one has_exception() and one drainMicrotasks per loop turn on Windows, the same calls every callback exit already makes.

Gate. The code is #[cfg(windows)] and the tests are gated to Windows, so on Linux they pass with and without the change. The proof is the Windows runs above and the Windows CI lanes.

Rebase. Rebased onto main at b7b4ddd and squashed to one commit. The only conflict was in test/napi/napi-app/async_tests.cpp, where #39810 added its fixtures at the same spot as the uv_queue_work one; both blocks are kept. On a freshly provisioned windows-x64 machine the rebased tree passes the six tests, test_callback_scope, and worker_threads.test.ts (137). In the full napi.test.ts run on that machine the two worker tests took 5.0 s and 5.9 s under the file's own load, so they now carry the 30 s timeout the file already gives its other worker test. The failures left in that full run (napi_wrap lifetime, the printf-losing pending-exception test, 5 s timeouts on conversion tests and on one of #39810's new worker tests) are the same pre-existing load and GC classes as before.

Status: ready for review at 8e51464 (803f610 is an empty re-run commit). CI is red only on test/js/bun/http/bun-server.test.ts on the Windows x64 lane (server stays alive while a websocket is connected, then collects after close, a GC collection check). That test started failing on main with the base commit of this branch, b7b4ddd (#39732): main build 102154 fails it, 102067 right before does not, and both runs of this branch (102185, 102229) fail it the same way. It is reported to main-break triage. It passes locally on windows-x64 on both main and this branch (20 runs each). Everything else in both runs was retried flake, and the six new tests passed on both Windows lanes on the first attempt each time.

Reproduced on Windows x64 with 1.4.0-canary.1+32e87032b: a probe addon that queues uv_queue_work on the loop from napi_get_uv_event_loop gets its after-work callback, napi_resolve_deferred returns ok, and the .then reaction is still queued when beforeExit and exit fire. A worker awaiting the same promise exits 13, and a throw the callback leaves pending reaches the next JS entry instead of being reported.

The branch folds after each of the three polls of that loop (report a pending throw, else drain). The six tests in napi.test.ts plus the upstream test-resolve-async.js fail on the canary and pass with a bun bd build of this branch on windows-x64. Details are in the description.

I reviewed this and didn't find any bugs. The two #[cfg(windows)] maybe_drain_microtasks() calls look correct and match how the function is used elsewhere (let _ = on the Stopped result, guarded by entered_event_loop_count == 0). Because it changes what runs on every Windows event-loop poll, a human sign-off on the timing/ordering implications would still be worthwhile.

What was checked:

  • maybe_drain_microtasks semantics and existing call sites — the let _ = discard matches event_loop.rs:927.
  • The early-return state.is_null() paths in both auto_tick/auto_tick_active are not covered, but those precede any napi addon loading so the gap is not reachable for this bug.
  • Test assertion line endings on Windows — both output lines come from JS console.log, so no \r\n issue with the .toBe("…\n…").
  • The do.test.ts todoIf rewrite preserves the pre-existing test-async-hooks.js and test.js-on-Windows todos.
Extended reasoning...

Overview

Two #[cfg(windows)] blocks are added to auto_tick and auto_tick_active in src/runtime/jsc_hooks.rs, each calling (*el).maybe_drain_microtasks() after the libuv poll and before on_after_event_loop() / the caller's is_event_loop_alive() check. A new N-API test fixture (create_promise_with_uv_queue_work in async_tests.cpp + driver in module.js + it.skipIf(!isWindows) in napi.test.ts) exercises uv_queue_work on the loop from napi_get_uv_event_loop, and test_callback_scope/do.test.ts un-todos test-resolve-async.js on Windows.

Security risks

None. No user input parsing, no auth/crypto, no boundary crossing beyond the existing napi surface.

Level of scrutiny

High. auto_tick/auto_tick_active are the per-turn poll step of the main event loop; adding a microtask checkpoint there on Windows changes what runs on every loop turn. The change is small and maybe_drain_microtasks is designed for exactly this (it no-ops when an enter() is open or inside the deferred task queue), but event-loop timing changes are the class of edit where a maintainer's judgment on ordering side effects is most valuable. The PR description documents extensive Windows suite runs (microtask, setImmediate/setTimeout/setInterval, worker_threads, spawn, exit-code) which I cannot independently reproduce here.

Other factors

  • The let _ = discard of Result<(), Stopped> matches the existing call at src/jsc/event_loop.rs:927.
  • Both functions have a state.is_null() early return that also polls (tick_without_idle) but does not reach the new drain. That path implies no RuntimeState, which precedes any addon load, so the omission does not affect the bug being fixed.
  • The new napi.test.ts assertion uses toBe("resolved to after_work_cb status 0\nbeforeExit"); both lines come from JS console.log (LF on all platforms), so no CRLF mismatch.
  • The C++ fixture leaks UvQueueWorkData on any NODE_API_CALL_CUSTOM_RETURN early return before delete data, but that is test-fixture-only and consistent with sibling fixtures in the same file.
  • The do.test.ts refactor keeps the test-async-hooks.js and (test.js && isWindows) todos intact and drops the Windows todo for test-resolve-async.js, matching the fix.
  • PR description is unusually thorough (fail-before/pass-after transcripts, related-PR coordination). No prior human reviews on the thread.

On the per-turn timing question: the new call runs at the point where, on POSIX, the same checkpoint has already run once per callback of the turn. When the uv poll ran only Bun's own callbacks, each of them already drained at its exit(), so the added call finds an empty queue and only changes anything when an addon callback left work behind. The ordering inside a turn is unchanged for everything Bun schedules itself. The Windows runs of the microtask, setImmediate, setTimeout, setInterval, worker_threads, spawn and process suites listed in the description were run to check exactly that.

The state.is_null() early returns are left alone on purpose: no RuntimeState means no runtime, so no addon can have been loaded. The fixture leak on an assertion failure is accepted, the test fails at that point either way.

I reviewed this PR and didn't find any bugs. Because it inserts a per-turn microtask drain and exception fold into the Windows event-loop poll step — critical-path infrastructure — and makes a deliberate policy choice (reporting an addon callback's unchecked throw as uncaughtException, where Node leaves it latched), a human look would still be worthwhile.

What was reviewed:

  • fold_addon_uv_callbacks matches the existing has_exception() → report_error_or_terminate / maybe_drain_microtasks shape at VirtualMachine.rs:1718 and event_loop.rs:774; JsError::Thrown is the right proof value given has_exception() returned true.
  • Placement after the poll and before on_after_event_loop() in both auto_tick and auto_tick_active; the state.is_null() early returns skipping the fold are fine (no runtime → no addon).
  • The C++ fixture's early-return leaks on NODE_API_CALL_CUSTOM_RETURN failure and the UvQueueWorkData leak if uv_queue_work fails were considered — acceptable for a test fixture, and the author already acknowledged this on the thread.
Extended reasoning...

Overview

This PR fixes a Windows-only gap where addon libuv callbacks (uv_queue_work, uv_async_t, etc. on the loop from napi_get_uv_event_loop) run inside uv_run with no enter()/exit() bracket, so promise reactions they queue never drain and unchecked throws stay pending until the next JS entry. The fix adds fold_addon_uv_callbacks — a ~10-line Windows-only helper called after the poll in auto_tick and auto_tick_active that reports a pending exception via report_error_or_terminate or else runs maybe_drain_microtasks. Test coverage adds a uv_queue_work fixture to napi-app and four Windows-gated tests (main-thread reaction order, unchecked-throw reporting, worker top-level await, worker error event) plus enabling Node's upstream test-resolve-async.js on Windows.

Security risks

None. No user-controlled input reaches new parsing or bounds decisions; the change is control-flow only (when to drain microtasks / report an already-pending exception). The unsafe blocks dereference the per-thread VM/global/event_loop pointers under the same contracts the surrounding auto_tick code already relies on.

Level of scrutiny

High. The two call sites are inside the Windows event-loop poll step, which runs once per turn for the process lifetime. The added cost (one has_exception() FFI + one drainMicrotasks when the queue is empty) is what every callback exit already pays, and the author ran the microtask/timer/worker/spawn/process suites on Windows to check no ordering regressed. Still, per-turn scheduling changes are exactly where subtle regressions hide, and the change interacts with four in-flight PRs (#39652 POSIX uv_queue_work, #38378 poll() merge, #32866 beforeExit drain, #37981 idle-turn rejections) whose sequencing a maintainer should coordinate.

Other factors

The exception half is a policy decision: Node leaves an addon's unchecked throw latched on the env, while this PR reports it as uncaughtException (matching Bun's existing rule for complete and call_js callbacks). The author documented this and made that test bun-only — reasonable, but worth a maintainer confirming it's the intended policy for direct-libuv callbacks too. The comment-cop bot's two nags were addressed (doc comment shortened in 079ceec) and the remaining length is justified by the required # Safety section. The fail-before/pass-after evidence is thorough and the tests assert exact output order rather than mere presence.

The one decision in here for a maintainer is the exception half: an unchecked throw from a callback libuv invoked is reported as an uncaught exception, where Node keeps it latched in the env and, in this shape, never surfaces it. This follows the rule Bun already applies to complete, call_js and cleanup-hook callbacks, and #39652 applies it to the same callbacks on POSIX, so the two platforms agree once both land. If that rule is not wanted for these callbacks, dropping the has_exception() branch leaves the drain, and the callback_throws test goes with it.

Correction to my comment above: the has_exception() branch is not optional. With the drain alone, a throw the callback did not check stays on the VM, every later drain is a no-op, and the next JS entry fails on it: the beforeExit emit dies on assertNoException in a debug build, and under the wait for an entry module the process hangs (both recorded in the description). Reporting it is the only way to leave the VM usable. The open question is only the wording, not whether to fold.

07407fe also makes the helper a safe fn taking the global (its earlier Safety clause "no enter() open" was not true under nested waits and was not needed), and adds the entry-module variant of the unchecked-throw test, which exercises the auto_tick site. Five tests now, all verified on windows-x64 against the canary and this branch.

a027c49 takes the sibling-site point from the last review: tick_possibly_forever, the park --hot and --watch sit in once the loop is dead, polls the same uv loop, so it is the third place an addon callback can run between brackets. The helper now lives in bun_jsc as EventLoop::fold_addon_uv_callbacks and all three polls call it. The new --hot test fails its entry so the loop is never alive again and the callback can only run in the park; on the two-site version of this branch the debug build panics with a task returned Ok with a JS exception pending on the tick after the park, with the fold it prints the report and the value and exits 0. Verified on windows-x64 along with the other five tests and the upstream one. The entry fixture also rejects an unknown mode now.

The description is updated for the three polls and no longer claims parity with the env-aware folds: a throw raised with napi_throw_* stays latched as in Node, only what a callback left on the VM is reported.

Thanks for addressing the tick_possibly_forever sibling — moving fold_addon_uv_callbacks into bun_jsc::event_loop and adding the --hot park test covers all three poll sites now. I re-reviewed and found no bugs in the updated diff.

A human look is still worthwhile given this touches the core event-loop poll/tick path and carries the flagged behavioral decision (reporting the unchecked throw as uncaughtException where Node latches it silently in the env).

What was reviewed:

  • The three Windows poll sites (auto_tick, auto_tick_active, tick_possibly_forever) each fold after uv_run, before on_after_event_loop / the liveness check.
  • maybe_drain_microtasks under a nested wait's open enter() correctly defers to the wait's next tick(); report_error_or_terminate handles the termination case.
  • The six tests cover run loop / entry-module wait / worker spin / --hot park, and the three same-output tests are gated skipIf(!isWindows) so POSIX lanes stay green.

(The comment-cop flag on event_loop.rs:1202 is the same doc-comment complaint already discussed for jsc_hooks.rs.)

Extended reasoning...

Overview

This PR fixes Windows-only behavior where addon callbacks invoked by libuv directly (via uv_queue_work on the loop from napi_get_uv_event_loop) run without an enter()/exit() bracket, so microtasks they queue never drain and unchecked throws stay pending on the VM. The fix adds fold_addon_uv_callbacks — a two-branch helper (has_exception() → report_error_or_terminate, else maybe_drain_microtasks()) — after each of the three Windows poll sites: auto_tick and auto_tick_active in src/runtime/jsc_hooks.rs, and tick_possibly_forever in src/jsc/event_loop.rs. All new production code is #[cfg(windows)].

Since my prior review, commit a027c49 addressed my tick_possibly_forever sibling comment by moving the helper down to bun_jsc::event_loop (resolving the crate-boundary issue I noted) and adding it at that third site, with a new --hot fixture test that exercises the watch-mode park. The commit also added mode validation to uv-queue-work-entry.mjs per CodeRabbit's suggestion.

Security risks

None. This is event-loop plumbing on the JS thread; no untrusted input parsing, no auth, no external I/O. The only new C++ is a test fixture.

Level of scrutiny

High — this is the core event-loop poll step, and the exception-reporting half is a deliberate divergence from Node (Node latches the throw in the env and never surfaces it in these shapes; Bun reports it as uncaughtException). robobun confirmed the branch is not optional (a pending exception makes every later drain a no-op and hangs the entry-module wait), so the decision is how to surface it, not whether to fold. That is exactly the kind of behavioral call the PR author explicitly flagged for a maintainer, and it interacts with several open PRs (#39652 adds the same fold on POSIX, #38378 merges the two auto_tick functions, #32866 drains after beforeExit).

Other factors

  • Test coverage is thorough: six Windows-gated tests covering the run loop, worker spin (resolve + reject), entry-module wait, and --hot park; plus test-resolve-async.js un-todo'd on Windows. The three checkSameOutput tests verify Node parity for the reaction-ordering half.
  • The bug-hunting system found nothing this run. All prior CodeRabbit threads are resolved. The outstanding github-actions comment-cop flag on event_loop.rs:1202 is the same automated doc-comment-length complaint already raised and rebutted for the identical comment when it lived in jsc_hooks.rs; the 7-line doc comment describes what the function does and why, not a workaround justification.
  • I verified the borrow shape matches report_error_or_terminate (fresh reborrow, no post-call event-loop reads), that the fold sits before on_after_event_loop / the caller's liveness check at all three sites, and that maybe_drain_microtasks correctly no-ops under a nested wait's open entered_event_loop_count > 0.

Given the critical-path location and the maintainer-flagged behavioral decision, I'm deferring rather than approving.

…s after the libuv poll

On Windows the loop that auto_tick, auto_tick_active and the --hot park
(tick_possibly_forever) poll is the one napi_get_uv_event_loop hands to
addons. Callbacks of the handles and requests an addon puts on it run
inside uv_run, outside the enter()/exit() pair that drains microtasks and
folds exceptions for Bun's own callbacks. A promise such a callback
resolves keeps its reactions queued, so with nothing else keeping the
loop alive the process exits without running them (a worker awaiting it
exits 13), and a throw the callback did not check stays on the VM until
the next JS entry meets it.

EventLoop::fold_addon_uv_callbacks runs after each of the three polls:
an exception on the VM is reported through report_error_or_terminate,
otherwise the microtask checkpoint runs.

Tests: a uv_queue_work fixture in napi-app driven from the run loop, a
worker's top-level await (resolve and reject), the entry-module wait and
the --hot park, plus Node's test_callback_scope/test-resolve-async.js
enabled on Windows.

I reviewed this again after a027c49 and didn't find any bugs. My earlier sibling-site note (tick_possibly_forever) is addressed: the helper now lives on EventLoop, all three Windows poll sites call it, and the new --hot test pins that third site. Because the fold sits in the core event-loop poll path and the description flags coordination with #38378/#39652, a maintainer look is still worthwhile.

What was reviewed:

  • The three #[cfg(windows)] call sites vs. every path that runs uv_run on the thread's loop — no remaining sibling.
  • fold_addon_uv_callbacks under a nested wait: maybe_drain_microtasks defers on entered_event_loop_count > 0, and report_error_or_terminate is the same fold run_callback uses.
  • The six new tests: each spawns with bunEnv, drains stdout/stderr/exited concurrently, and asserts exact ordered output; the --hot fixture forces the callback into the park by failing the entry first.
Extended reasoning...

Overview

Adds EventLoop::fold_addon_uv_callbacks (Windows-only, #[cfg(windows)]) in src/jsc/event_loop.rs and calls it after each of the three libuv poll sites: tick_possibly_forever, and auto_tick/auto_tick_active in src/runtime/jsc_hooks.rs. The helper reports any exception an addon uv callback left on the VM via report_error_or_terminate, else runs maybe_drain_microtasks(). Test side: a new create_promise_with_uv_queue_work fixture in async_tests.cpp, three JS drivers in module.js, two entry .mjs fixtures, six Windows-gated tests in napi.test.ts, and test-resolve-async.js enabled on Windows in test_callback_scope/do.test.ts.

Security risks

None identified. No parsing of untrusted input, no auth/crypto/permissions. The runtime change is a cfg-gated fold after an existing poll; on non-Windows it compiles to nothing.

Level of scrutiny

High. event_loop.rs and jsc_hooks.rs are the core dispatch path; a wrong fold here could double-drain, swallow a termination, or panic under a nested wait. The change is small (~15 lines of Rust) and copies the shape of run_callback's fold and on_exit's cleanup-hook fold, but the placement inside the poll step and the interaction with blocking waits (wait_for_promise, entry-module wait, --hot park) are exactly the kind of thing a maintainer who owns the event loop should sign off on. The PR description also names four in-flight PRs (#39652, #38378, #32866, #37981) whose merge order needs a one-line adjustment here or there.

Other factors

  • My prior review's only finding (the tick_possibly_forever sibling) was fully addressed: helper moved into bun_jsc, third call site added, and a --hot test that fails on the two-site version.
  • All CodeRabbit threads are resolved (fixture cleanup pattern matches AsyncWorkData::complete; bunEnv sets BUN_DEBUG_QUIET_LOGS=1 so exact-stdout assertions are stable; the maybe_drain_microtasks reborrow matches report_error_or_terminate's shape).
  • The unknown-mode guard was added to uv-queue-work-entry.mjs per review.
  • Tests are Windows-gated and the runtime change is #[cfg(windows)], so verification is on the Windows CI lanes; the description records windows-x64 fail-before/pass-after for each test.
