Problem

  • A fetch with a streaming request body holds refs on its FetchTasklet that a plain fetch never takes. VM teardown (a worker ending or terminated) dropped none of them, so the whole request outlived the VM.
  • The upload ref (FetchTasklet.rs:684): for a body from a native source (another response's body, Bun.file().stream()) only the source ending the sink or a progress update cancelling it drops it. Teardown destroys the source without ending the sink and releases the progress update unrun. A JS-pumped body is fine: its controller cell's destructor runs the sink's finalize.
  • The drain hop ref: the hop was a ManagedTask without cleanup, so one still queued at teardown was freed with its ref.

Fix

  • stop_for_vm_teardown also ends a live native sink: mark it ended, unpipe the source (no script), drop its ref through the allocation pointer, as finalize does, since it can be the last one.
  • The drain hop is a tagged task of its own (FetchTaskletDrainHop, like the deinit hop): run resumes the stream as before, release_unrun drops the ref. One allocation less per drain.
  • bun test --isolate reaches the same stop. Its VM lives on and the progress update still cancels the sink, so that path only aborts, as before. A new row in isolation.test.ts pins that: with the teardown stop used there, a Bun.file() upload left in flight keeps its file's global alive (8 of 8 globals live instead of 2).
  • Verified: worker-late-completion.test.ts, block "a worker goes while a request body is still uploading", 5 rows, 3 of them failing on main, and the isolation row above. Other suites in the notes.

Background

  • FetchTasklet is the per-fetch() object shared by the JS and HTTP threads: one ref for the JS side, one for the HTTP thread, one per upload, one per queued drain hop (what the HTTP thread posts when the upload buffer empties).
  • FetchRequestBodySink receives the body chunks; its task back-pointer is the token for the upload ref. A native source calls the sink directly, a JS source goes through a controller cell.
  • Teardown stops every handle without script, waits for the HTTP thread to hand its requests back, releases the tasks still queued unrun, then destroys the heap.
Notes

Origin: the HTTP-thread crashes BUN-3BR3 and BUN-3EX4 (FetchTasklet::callback enqueueing on a freed tasklet or loop), suspected to be an over-release of the upload ref. They are not, and main does not reproduce them:

  • 61 of the 64 events have workers_spawned and workers_terminated, including every event on a build that contains fetch: don't double-release the request-stream ref when a native body sink ends inline #36939 (45ee955, 52bf09c). On those builds a worker's shutdown freed the VirtualMachine while its fetches were still out on the HTTP thread, so callback read javascript_vm.event_loop from freed memory. One door out of a VM's thread: tickets + a teardown that waits #38299 makes teardown wait for them. There are no events on a build after it.
  • The other 3 events (Claude Code builds, abort_signal, no workers) belong to the same family as the assert_no_refs panics BUN-3KDD and BUN-3PM8 and the BUN-3BZF unwrap: the HTTP thread hit zero while the JS side still held a ref. Every affected build is based on upstream from before http: prevent double final-result delivery after client failure #32015 (the client delivered a second final result after fail(), so the HTTP-side ref was dropped twice). The two newer stable builds (eb835313a, 939d4325b) show none of these signatures over 5 days while having the most traffic.
  • write_end_request and finalize are exclusive on main: the promise handlers clear sink.task before releasing, and the controller cell can only die still attached once the pump promise is unreachable or the heap is going down. A refcount trace of a terminate during a JS-pumped upload shows finalize as the single release of that ref.

The drain hop leak and the --isolate point came out of review of the first version of this PR. The drain hop case is deterministic: a direct stream's pull() writes a chunk and exits the worker, so the hop for that chunk is still queued when teardown releases the queue (refcount trace: the tasklet ends at 1 with no deinit).

On main the rows fail as: FIFO body 0 of 1 tasklets torn down, drain hop 0 of 1, response body 1 of 2 (plus an LSan report). The JS pull and direct rows pass on main and guard against a release too many.

Test oracles: the worker rows count the tasklet's deinit debug log line (BUN_DEBUG_FetchTasklet=1) on debug builds; on the ASAN build (a release build, no such log) they run for ASAN and LSan. LSan only reports the response-body row: a leaked tasklet that stale JS heap memory still points at (the FIFO and drain rows) counts as reachable for it. The isolation row uses the existing 8-file live-globals fixture: the file reader's pending read roots the stream, so a reader that is unpiped instead of cancelled pins the file's global. Measured: 1, 2, 2, ... at head; 1, 2, 3, ... 8 with the teardown stop wired to the isolate path.

Out of scope, same pattern elsewhere: a native source's finalize never ends the sink piped from it, so every consumer holding a ref for the length of a native pipe has to drop it at teardown itself. Bun.serve already does (RequestContext, abort path). The S3 streaming upload (S3UploadStreamWrapper, pump ref released only by NetworkSink::end_from_stream or the failure path, and not an ActiveHandle) does not; that is handed off separately, and its fix shares no code with this diff. FileSink fed by a native source holds a similar keep-alive ref; not verified here.

Probes on the ASAN debug build, all clean: a worker terminated, exited or aborted during a JS, direct and native upload (12 modes, 20 to 60 iterations each); 400 iterations of aborting a fetch with each body kind at different points against a parking, an answering and a closing server, with GC in between; bun test --isolate with a native upload and with a FIFO upload left in flight.

Suites run: all of worker-late-completion, body-stream (9086 tests, exercises the drain hop), fetch-abort-stream-body, fetch-stream-cancel-leak, fetch.stream, stream-fast-path, exiting, all of cli/test/isolation, and the 23 source lint files.

Unrelated leak found on the way, handed off and now #39660: Bun.serve keeps a pending request's buffered body bytes when the handler never settles.

The fetch.stream.test.ts failures seen locally are the 5 s local default timeout on the ASAN build; they pass with the CI timeout.

CI on the current head (e612c1c, build 102971): the test lanes fail on test/cli/install/bun-audit.test.ts, whose snapshot contains the literal version range <1.4.1 that normalizeBunSnapshot now rewrites after main's version bump to 1.4.1. That fails on main as well and is reported to main-break triage; it does not involve this PR. The previous build on the earlier rebase (102155) had every lane green apart from one unrelated node:http2 GC-liveness test, also reported.

Review feedback so far:

  • The test now builds the FIFO path from its temp dir and passes it to the host script (21c99e3).
  • The new doc comments in FetchTasklet.rs are cut down to the contract change (May free it.), one line on the release, and three lines on detach_native_request_body_sink (4902364, e868962). The three lines state why the function exists and what it returns, so they stay.

No behavior change since e982e87. The four new tests pass on the ASAN build after each push.

500b5f0 takes both review findings:

  • The drain hop posted by on_write_request_data_drain carried a ref that a teardown release did not drop. It is now FetchTaskletDrainHop with its own task tag, and release_unrun drops the ref. A refcount trace of a direct stream whose pull() writes and exits the worker confirmed the leak on main (tasklet left at one ref, no deinit). That case is the fifth test row.
  • The bun test --isolate swap now only aborts the fetch (abort_for_test_isolation), so the later progress update cancels the sink as it did before this PR.

The test block now counts the tasklet's deinit debug line per fetch instead of relying on LSan alone. LSan only sees the response-body row; the FIFO and drain rows leak a tasklet that stale JS heap memory still points at. With src/ at main, 3 of the 5 rows fail; all 5 pass on the branch. The PR body is updated for the new scope.

The only red lane in the previous run was node-tls-server.test.ts on macOS arm64, which fails on main too and is reported separately.

453aca2 fixes the new test block on the ASAN lane. The deinit log line it counted is compiled in for the debug profile only, and the ASAN lane is a release build, so every row reported zero there. The count is now asserted on debug builds only (which is also what the fail-before check runs); on the ASAN build the rows run for ASAN and LSan as in the first version. No change to src/ beyond two shorter comments.

The review finding on the test block's oracle is the failure CI reported on 500b5f0; 453aca2 already has the fix (the deinit count is asserted on debug builds only). Thread replied to and resolved. Nothing else open.

I reviewed this PR across three passes and all findings from earlier runs (the --isolate fd/poll-ref regression, the drain-hop ManagedTask leak, and the release-ASAN test oracle) are addressed in 500b5f0 and 453aca2; this pass found nothing new. Because the change reworks cross-thread FetchTasklet refcounting at VM teardown — where an over-release is a UAF on the HTTP thread's hand-back — a human look is still worthwhile.

What was reviewed:

  • stop_for_vm_teardown's new detach path: abort_task and detach_native_request_body_sink don't deref, and the owed ref is dropped via the raw allocation pointer (may be last).
  • FetchTaskletDrainHop mirrors FetchTaskletDeinitHop; create_from replaces the ManagedTask box, so release_unrun now derefs the queued hop.
  • jsc_hooks.rs gates the detach on VmTeardown only; --isolate keeps the pre-PR abort-only path so cancel_request_body_sink still closes the source.
  • Test oracle: deinits count asserted only on isDebug; release-ASAN rows keep LSan/ASAN as the check.
Extended reasoning...

Overview

Fixes two FetchTasklet refcount leaks at worker VM teardown when a fetch has a streaming request body: (1) the upload ref taken in start_request_stream for a native source (ByteStream/FileReader) was never released because teardown destroys the source without ending the sink and releases the progress-update task unrun; (2) a queued drain hop was a ManagedTask with cleanup: None, so releasing it unrun leaked its ref. Touches FetchTasklet.rs (new detach_native_request_body_sink, abort_for_test_isolation, FetchTaskletDrainHop tag/type), the task-tag table and both dispatch/release arms in dispatch.rs, the ActiveHandle::Fetch arm in jsc_hooks.rs, and adds a 5-row test block in worker-late-completion.test.ts.

Security risks

None identified. This is internal lifecycle/refcount plumbing at VM teardown; no user input parsing, auth, crypto, or network-boundary validation is touched.

Level of scrutiny

High. Per REVIEW.md this is squarely in the "memory safety — the most-blocked category": cross-thread refcounts (JS thread ↔ HTTP thread) at a VM lifecycle boundary, where an under-release leaks the whole request and an over-release is a UAF while the HTTP thread still holds/hands back the tasklet. The PR body's own crash-report analysis (BUN-3BR3/3EX4) shows how subtle this class is. The fix looks correct and follows existing patterns (FetchTaskletDeinitHop, JSSink::detach, deref via raw pointer), but a maintainer who owns the FetchTasklet ref model should confirm the invariants — particularly that detach_native_request_body_sink cannot race with a JS-pump controller cell's finalize on the same sink (the matches!(.., ByteStream | FileReader) gate should exclude that, and the PR notes argue write_end_request and finalize are exclusive on main).

Other factors

All three findings from my earlier passes were addressed with commits and confirmed (refcount trace for the drain hop, hand-checked fd close for --isolate, CI-confirmed for the ASAN-lane oracle). The test coverage is strong: 5 rows covering JS pull, direct, response-body, FIFO, and the drain-hop-at-exit case, with 3 rows failing on main. The author ran extensive ASAN/LSan probes (12 modes × 20-60 iters, 400 abort iters). CI build #101251 is running on the current head. The comment-cop bot flags on the remaining doc comments were reasonably declined (they're the required # Safety sections and a two-line hop doc mirroring the sibling above it).

On the one point left open in the review, the detach cannot meet a controller cell's finalize on the same sink. start_request_stream tries wire_native_sink first and only falls through to assign_to_stream when there is no native source, so a sink has either a native source and no controller cell, or a JSController source and a cell. detach_native_request_body_sink returns early for the second kind, and for the first kind there is no cell whose destructor could call finalize. The sink's task token is taken once either way.

Nothing else is open from my side. Waiting on CI for 453aca2 and on a maintainer.

e2c33a3 adds the missing test for the --isolate arm: a row in the existing 8-file live-globals fixture in test/cli/test/isolation.test.ts that leaves a Bun.file() upload in flight in each file. At head the live global count plateaus at 2. With the teardown stop wired to the isolate path (the shape of the first push) it climbs to 8 and the row fails, so the two arms are now pinned separately.

The PR body now also names the other instances of this pattern. The S3 streaming upload has the same gap and is handed off as its own fix, since it shares no code with this diff; Bun.serve already handles its copy. The Bun.serve buffered body leak found earlier is #39660.

I reviewed this PR and found no new issues. All three of my earlier findings (the drain-hop leak, the --isolate sink-cancel regression, and the release-ASAN test oracle) have been addressed with tests, and the last commit adds the isolation-path regression pin I'd asked about. Because this is cross-thread refcount lifecycle at VM teardown — the kind of change where an off-by-one is a UAF — a maintainer look is still worthwhile.

What was reviewed:

  • detach_native_request_body_sink: sink.task.take() gates the deref, matching every other sink.task = None → write_end_request/deref site; ended = true first so cancel_request_body_sink early-returns and can't double-release.
  • FetchTaskletDrainHop: both run_task and release_task_unrun arms added, task_tag::COUNT bumped; create_from drops the per-drain ManagedTask heap box.
  • The StopReason::TestIsolation split now only aborts — the later progress update reaches sink.source.close(None) as before; the new isolation.test.ts row pins that with the live-globals count.
  • Checked that JSSink::detach for ByteStream/FileReader only unpipe_without_deref + source.clear() (no script), so it's safe in the no-script teardown phase.
Extended reasoning...

Overview

The PR fixes two refcount leaks on FetchTasklet at VM teardown when a fetch() with a streaming request body is still uploading: (1) the upload ref held via sink.task for native-source bodies (ByteStream/FileReader), which nothing at teardown released because the progress update that would cancel the sink is itself released unrun; (2) the drain-hop ref, previously carried by a ManagedTask with cleanup: None, so release_unrun freed the box without deref'ing. It touches ConcurrentTask.rs (new tag), dispatch.rs (run + release arms, COUNT bump), jsc_hooks.rs (split ActiveHandle::Fetch on StopReason), fetch.rs (re-export), FetchTasklet.rs (the two fixes + new abort_for_test_isolation), and adds five test rows in worker-late-completion.test.ts plus one in isolation.test.ts.

Security risks

None identified. This is internal refcount lifecycle; no user-controlled input reaches the new code paths beyond what fetch() already validates.

Level of scrutiny

High. This is exactly the category REVIEW.md flags hardest: reference counts balanced on every terminal path across the JS thread / HTTP thread boundary, at VM teardown where the released ref can be the last one. Earlier review rounds on this PR found two real bugs (the drain-hop sibling leak and the --isolate regression where the new detach pre-empted the progress update's on_cancel) plus a CI test-oracle mismatch, all of which were fixed — which itself demonstrates the change is subtle enough to warrant a maintainer's eyes.

Other factors

  • All my prior inline findings are addressed with tests that fail on main (per the PR notes: 3 of 5 worker rows fail on main; the isolation row climbs to 8/8 globals with the wrong stop wired).
  • The owes_ref gate on sink.task.take().is_some() matches the invariant used everywhere else in the file: sink.task is the token for the upload's +1, cleared before every other release site.
  • The PR body's verification is thorough (refcount traces, ASAN/LSan probes across 12 modes, the exclusivity argument for write_end_request vs finalize), and robobun's follow-up at 12:34 answers the one open question I'd left about finalize racing the detach.
  • Not approving because this is not a simple/mechanical change and the guidelines say to defer for complex changes touching critical paths.

The review passes are done with nothing open. One last test-only push, 1c8d14b: the upload teardown rows no longer pass a per-test timeout (the repo's test rules say not to, and the rows take about 3 s each on the ASAN debug build with LSan at exit, inside the default). No change to src/ since 500b5f0 apart from two shorter comments.

On the summary's note about relative FIFO paths: both FIFOs are absolute. The worker rows build the path with path.join(String(dir), "fifo") in the test and pass it into the host script, which uses it for mkfifo, openSync and workerData. The isolation fixture uses import.meta.path + ".fifo". Neither spawned script touches a relative path.

This automated review pass found no issues on the current revision; the two findings from earlier passes (the drain-hop ref leak and the --isolate sink-cancel regression) are addressed in 500b5f0 and pinned by tests. Because the change reasons about FetchTasklet refcount balance across the JS/HTTP threads at VM teardown — including a path where stop_for_vm_teardown may drop the last ref — a maintainer look at the ref accounting is still worthwhile.

What was reviewed:

  • detach_native_request_body_sink gating: only ByteStream/FileReader sources reach JSSink::detach, so no script runs at teardown; sink.task.take() is the single release site for the upload ref.
  • FetchTaskletDrainHop: run/release_unrun each drop exactly the +1 taken in on_write_request_data_drain; dispatch and release arms wired, task_tag::COUNT bumped.
  • StopReason::TestIsolation now takes abort_for_test_isolation (abort only), so the later progress update still cancels the sink; the new isolation.test.ts row pins that with the 8-file live-globals fixture.
  • The deinits oracle is gated on isDebug so the release-ASAN lane runs the rows for ASAN/LSan only.
Extended reasoning...

Overview

The PR fixes two FetchTasklet ref leaks at VM teardown when a fetch's request body is still uploading: (1) the upload ref held via sink.task for native-source bodies (ByteStream/FileReader), which nothing else releases once the progress update is released unrun; (2) the drain-hop ref, previously carried by a ManagedTask with cleanup: None, so release_unrun freed the box without deref'ing. It also splits the --isolate swap onto its own abort_for_test_isolation (abort only) so the surviving VM's progress update still cancels the sink and closes the reader fd. Files touched: FetchTasklet.rs (new FetchTaskletDrainHop, detach_native_request_body_sink, stop_for_vm_teardown now may free), ConcurrentTask.rs/dispatch.rs (new tag + arms), jsc_hooks.rs (reason gate on the Fetch arm), plus 5 new worker-teardown test rows and 1 isolation row.

Security risks

None. This is internal refcount lifecycle at VM teardown; no user-controlled input reaches the new code, and no auth/crypto/permissions are involved.

Level of scrutiny

High. This is squarely in REVIEW.md's most-blocked category: cross-thread refcount balance on a shared object (FetchTasklet), with a new path where stop_for_vm_teardown may drop the last ref (May free it.). Two real bugs were found in earlier passes of this same PR (the drain-hop sibling and the --isolate regression), both fixed and now covered by tests. The remaining reasoning — that detach_native_request_body_sink cannot race a controller cell's finalize on the same sink, and that the deref in stop_for_vm_teardown cannot precede the HTTP thread's hand-back — is argued convincingly in the thread but is exactly the kind of invariant a maintainer should confirm.

Other factors

Test coverage is thorough: 5 rows over the body-source matrix (JS pull, direct, response body, Bun.file, drain-hop), with a debug-build deinit-count oracle and ASAN/LSan on the release-ASAN lane; the --isolate arm is pinned separately by the live-globals fixture. All prior review threads (CodeRabbit, comment-cop, my two inline findings) are resolved. The author's notes enumerate the same-pattern siblings (S3 upload handed off, Bun.serve already handled) per the fix-the-whole-class rule. Given the memory-safety stakes and that this is not a mechanical change, I'm deferring rather than approving.

For the reviewer, on the one invariant the last pass asks to have confirmed (the drop in stop_for_vm_teardown against the HTTP thread's hand-back): the ref dropped there is only ever the upload's own, taken over through sink.task.take(). The HTTP thread's ref is dropped by its final callback alone, and the JS-side ref by the final progress update alone. So the stop-phase drop is the last one only when both of those have already happened, which is the case where the final progress update ran after script was forbidden and left the upload ref as the sole survivor. At that point nothing else refers to the tasklet: the handle was just popped from the registry, no task of its own is queued (the progress update has run, and the drain hop and deinit hop carry their own refs), so freeing it there is the same as freeing it from release_unrun. In every other interleaving the stop-phase drop leaves at least one ref and the usual owner frees it later.

Rebased onto main (c1f9608, no content changes). The one conflict was in test/cli/test/isolation.test.ts, where #39818 appended two rows and a header bullet to the same describe block as this PR's row; both sides are kept, main's first. After the rebase: worker-late-completion 38 of 38, isolation 28 of 28, the fetch abort suites, body-stream (9086) and the source lints all pass on the debug build.

I reviewed this PR again and found no new issues — the three earlier findings (the --isolate gate, the drain-hop leak, and the release-ASAN test oracle) are all addressed and each is now pinned by a test. Because this changes cross-thread refcount balancing at VM teardown (the new "may free it" contract on stop_for_vm_teardown), a maintainer should still confirm the last-ref interleaving argument in the final PR comment.

Checked this pass:

  • detach_native_request_body_sink gates on ByteStream/FileReader only and takes sink.task once, so it cannot race the JS-pump controller cell's finalize on the same ref.
  • FetchTaskletDrainHop mirrors FetchTaskletDeinitHop exactly (#[repr(transparent)], tagged release_unrun derefs); run_task and release_task_unrun arms and the COUNT bump are all present.
  • abort_for_test_isolation restores the pre-PR --isolate behavior; the new isolation-test row would fail if the teardown detach were used there.

This PR fixes two FetchTasklet refcount leaks at VM teardown when a worker ends while a fetch() request body is still uploading: (1) the upload ref held via sink.task for native-source bodies (Bun.file().stream(), another response's body), which nothing dropped once the progress update was released unrun; and (2) the drain-hop ref, which was posted as a ManagedTask with cleanup: None and so leaked when released unrun. It adds detach_native_request_body_sink to stop_for_vm_teardown, converts the drain hop to its own FetchTaskletDrainHop task tag with a release_unrun that derefs, splits out abort_for_test_isolation so the --isolate swap keeps its pre-PR abort-only behavior, and adds 5 worker rows plus 1 isolation row as tests.

Security risks

None. This is internal refcount lifecycle management with no user-facing surface, no parsing of untrusted input, and no auth/crypto/permissions.

Level of scrutiny

High. Per REVIEW.md, memory safety is the most-blocked category, and this is exactly the "reference counts provably balanced on every terminal path" and "may free it mid-callback" territory: stop_for_vm_teardown can now drop the last ref and free the tasklet, and the argument for why nothing else can still hold a pointer to it at that moment (walked through in the author's 2026-08-19T19:16 comment) depends on the ordering of the HTTP thread's hand-back, the final progress update, and the active-handle registry pop. That reasoning looks sound to me and is exercised by the ASAN/LSan test rows plus the author's 12-mode/400-iteration probes, but it warrants a maintainer's sign-off.

Other factors

All three of my earlier inline findings were taken and pinned by tests in the same PR (500b5f0 for the two logic findings, 453aca2 for the test oracle). CI is reported green apart from two pre-existing failures on main. The PR description includes refcount traces demonstrating the leaks on main and Sentry crash-report analysis confirming the original crash family is already fixed on main by #38299/#32015. The current bug-hunting pass found nothing. The tests follow harness conventions (absolute FIFO paths, tempDir, concurrent subprocess drain, isDebug-gated debug-log oracle with ASAN/LSan as the release-build oracle, skipIf(isWindows) for mkfifo).

…sources

start_request_stream takes one ref on the FetchTasklet for the upload.
A JS pumped body releases it when the heap destroys the pump controller
cell (the sink's finalize). A body that streams in from a ByteStream or
FileReader has no such cell. Its ref is released when the source ends
the sink or when a progress update cancels the sink. At VM teardown the
source is destroyed without ending the sink and the progress update is
released unrun, so the tasklet, its AsyncHTTP, the sink and the stream
buffer outlived the worker.

The stop phase now ends a native sink itself. It unpipes the source
without running script, takes the sink's hold on the tasklet, and
releases it through the allocation pointer, since it can be the last
ref. A fetch with a streaming body then tears down like a plain fetch.
…late

The "request body buffer drained" hop posted by the HTTP thread carries
a ref on the tasklet. It was a ManagedTask with no cleanup, so a hop
still queued when the VM tore down was freed without dropping the ref
and the request leaked. It is now a tagged hop of its own, like the
deinit hop, and release_unrun drops the ref. Posting it no longer
allocates a ManagedTask.

stop_active_handles also runs for the bun test --isolate swap, where
the VM keeps running and the final progress update still cancels the
body sink itself. Only the transport is aborted there, as before.

The worker test now counts the tasklet's deinit log line per fetch
instead of relying on LSan, which misses a leaked tasklet that stale
JS heap memory still points at, and adds the queued-drain-hop case.
scoped_log! is compiled in for the debug profile only. The ASAN lane
is a release build, so there the rows run for ASAN and LSan alone.

Rebased onto main again (e612c1c, no content changes). The conflict was the same shape as last time: #39871 appended a bullet and a row to the isolation describe block this PR also appends to; both are kept, main's first. After the rebase worker-late-completion (38), isolation (31), the fetch abort suites, body-stream (9086) and the thread-door and dead-code lints pass on the debug build.

I reviewed this PR again and found no new issues; the three findings from earlier passes (the drain-hop ref, the --isolate detach regression, and the release-ASAN test oracle) are all addressed and the threads are resolved. Given the cross-thread refcounting here — stop_for_vm_teardown may now drop the last ref on the tasklet, and the drain hop's release path is new — a human look at the ref-balance reasoning would still be worthwhile.

What was reviewed:

  • The new FetchTaskletDrainHop tag: run and release_unrun both drop the ref on_write_request_data_drain took; the dispatch and release arms in dispatch.rs match, and the task_tag::COUNT bump is correct.
  • detach_native_request_body_sink: only fires for ByteStream/FileReader sources with !ended, so it cannot meet a JS controller cell's finalize on the same sink; sink.task.take() is the token for the upload ref, and JSSink::detach does not enter script.
  • The --isolate split: abort_for_test_isolation only aborts, so the later progress update still reaches cancel_request_body_sink and closes the reader — pinned by the new isolation.test.ts row.
Extended reasoning...

Overview

This PR fixes two related FetchTasklet refcount leaks at VM teardown when a fetch() with a streaming request body is in flight: (1) the upload ref taken by start_request_stream for a native-source body (ByteStream/FileReader) was never dropped because teardown destroys the source without ending the sink and releases the progress update unrun; (2) the drain hop posted by on_write_request_data_drain was a ManagedTask with cleanup: None, so release_unrun freed the box without dropping the ref it carried. The fix adds detach_native_request_body_sink in stop_for_vm_teardown, gives the drain hop its own Taskable tag with a release_unrun that derefs, and splits the --isolate swap into a separate abort_for_test_isolation that only aborts (the VM stays open there, so the progress update still cancels the sink). Seven files touched: the task-tag table, the dispatch/release arms, the stop_active_handles reason gate, the tasklet itself, and two test files with new rows (5 worker-teardown rows, 1 isolation row).

Security risks

None identified. This is internal lifecycle/refcount management with no user-facing input handling, no auth/crypto, and no new attack surface.

Level of scrutiny

High. This is exactly the memory-safety class REVIEW.md flags as most-blocked: cross-thread reference counting on a ThreadSafeRefCounted object shared between the JS thread and the HTTP thread, where an over-release is a UAF (the HTTP thread's callback would enqueue on a freed tasklet — the BUN-3BR3/BUN-3EX4 signature the PR notes analyze) and an under-release leaks the whole request. The PR body's own reasoning about when stop_for_vm_teardown's drop can be the last one, and why freeing there is safe (handle just popped from the registry, no other queued task without its own ref), is the invariant a maintainer should verify. The three findings my earlier passes raised were each real (two behavior bugs, one CI-red test), which reinforces that this code is subtle enough to warrant human review even with a clean automated pass now.

Other factors

  • All three prior review threads from this bot are resolved with fix commits (500b5f0, 453aca2), and src/ has not changed since 500b5f0 apart from comment shortening. The two rebases resolved test-file conflicts only.
  • Test coverage is thorough: the 5 worker rows exercise JS-pull, direct, response-body, Bun.file(), and the drain-hop-exit case; the isolation row pins the --isolate arm separately by counting live globals. The debug-only deinit count oracle plus ASAN/LSan on the release-ASAN lane cover both leak and over-release.
  • CI on the rebased head reports 178/179 green with the one red being an unrelated node:http2 test on macOS arm64.
  • The comment-cop bot's remaining flags were pushed back on with justification (Safety sections on unsafe fns, matching the deinit-hop doc shape); those are stylistic and do not block.

### What does this PR do?

Hardening. This collects the open pull requests that fix a crash in Bun
into one change, and fixes about 20 more crashes that had no pull
request.

"Crash" here means a segfault, a Rust panic, an abort, a failed
assertion, memory corruption that a sanitizer reports, a native stack
overflow, or an exception that ends the process and that the program
can't catch. With this PR those cases throw a normal error, print a
normal CLI error and exit 1, or just work.

306 pull requests are included: 227 whole, and 79 cut down to the crash
fix where the rest was a refactor, a feature or a behavior change. Each
one was checked against current `main` first. 45 more turned out to be
fixed already, and 17 were duplicates. The full list is at the bottom.

#### Crashes you could hit in normal use

- **`bun build` with macros and a `.env` file crashed at random.** In a
repro with many macro modules, more than a third of the builds crashed.
Now 3,000 of 3,000 produce the right bundle. (#45960)
- **`bun run` and `bunx` aborted if a signal arrived while the child was
being spawned.** (#38926, #45965)
- **`bun build --compile ./index.js ./public/*` panicked** if an
embedded file's name wasn't valid UTF-8.
- **A truncated or corrupted compiled executable** died with SIGBUS or a
panic at startup. It now prints an error. (#31787, #38251, #41360)
- **Dev server:** several `Option::unwrap()` panics after a failed or
deleted import (#38046, #44744, #44746), a segfault when an `onLoad`
plugin throws while another bundle is queued, a request that hung and
then panicked with `bundle active`, and `server.stop()` that never
resolved after a client aborted a waiting request.
- **`Bun.serve`:** `server.fetch(url, { headers: new Headers() })`
followed by a GC segfaulted (#40888). Routes were used after free after
`server.reload()` with `tls.serverName` (#38636).
- **`text()` and `json()` on a stream of string chunks** could abort the
process, a regression in 1.4.0. (#44269)
- **`Bun.Transpiler` with `exports.eliminate` or `exports.replace`**
aborted on `export default 1` and on most re-export clauses. (#44137)
- **A decorated `declare` field in a class expression** with
`experimentalDecorators` panicked. (#38095)
- **YAML and JSON5 files with a key that isn't a string** panicked with
`--no-bundle` and in `Bun.Transpiler`. (#41827)
- **`Bun.FileSystemRouter`:** reading `.params` segfaulted when a
rejected route candidate left its parameters behind. (#39290, #39291)
- **Native addons that call `uv_async_*`, `uv_timer_*`, `uv_idle_*`,
`uv_prepare_*`, `uv_check_*`, `uv_queue_work` or `uv_cwd`** aborted with
"unsupported uv function" on Linux and macOS. They're implemented now.
(#36609, #39652, #39892)
- **`--watch` and `--hot`** panicked when the system was out of inotify
instances or file descriptors, or when the reload `exec` failed. They
print an error now. (#39629, #39975, #44837)
- **Paths longer than the path buffer** panicked in `bun install`, the
resolver, the bundler, `--compile`, `tsconfig.json` `paths` and
`baseUrl`, `package.json` `main` and `sideEffects`, `bun run --filter`,
`bun pm diff`, source maps and snapshots. They're ordinary errors now,
or they work. (#36340, #37529, #39104, #39650, #43067)
- **A Worker that creates a `ShadowRealm` and imports
`node:worker_threads` in it** segfaulted.
- **`structuredClone` or `postMessage` of an X25519 key** gave an object
that aborted the process when read. (#45624)
- **`node:stream` web adapters and `node:http2`** could end the process
with an exception that no handler could catch. (#45076, #45975)
- **Windows:** a watcher panic in a burst of file changes (#44344), a
segfault after the machine resumes from sleep (#33015), crashes in the
shell's pipe reader (#39638, #43606), and addons that import from
`node.exe` without the delay-load hook (#35618).

Most of the rest needs unusual input: strings near the 2 GiB limit,
buffers that another thread or a getter resizes or detaches in the
middle of a call, `worker.terminate()` at a bad moment, running out of
memory or file descriptors, very deep nesting, or hostile arguments to
`bun:ffi`, `node:vm` and `bun:sqlite`.

#### Behavior changes

Things that didn't crash before and behave differently now:

- `new` on native functions that aren't constructors throws a
`TypeError`, as in Node: `util.types.*`, `buffer.isAscii`, `isUtf8`,
`transcode`, `resolveObjectURL`, `bun:jsc` exports, `cc()` symbols. It
used to return the call's result. They also stop printing as `[class
hostname]`. (#34575)
- `` $`cmd` `` throws `ERR_INVALID_ARG_VALUE` if an environment
variable's name or value contains a NUL byte. It used to cut the value
at the NUL. (#44981)
- `cc()` functions throw a `TypeError` for arguments that used to reach
C as garbage, and `read.*(ptr, NaN)` throws. (#37989, #38057, #40773)
- As PID 1, `bun` exits with 128 + the signal number on Ctrl+C or
`docker stop`. (#38877)
- A `NODE_MODULE` addon that's already loaded by the main thread throws
`ERR_DLOPEN_FAILED` when a live Worker loads it too, as in Node.
(#39968)
- An exception from a `node:vm` context reaches `uncaughtException`
handlers. (#39992) `vm.constants.DONT_CONTEXTIFY` returns the real
global proxy. (#34623)
- `createPrivateKey` rejects an EC JWK whose private value doesn't match
its public point. (#33752)
- `@dec static {}` is a syntax error, as in TypeScript and esbuild.
(#44883)
- `clearTimeout` ignores 0 and negative ids, and timer ids no longer
wrap. (#44771)
- HEAD for a `Response` whose body is an S3-backed `Blob` reports the
length that GET sends. (#44734)
- `bun:sqlite` and `node:sqlite`: if `iterate()` left a write unfinished
on a connection that has a hook, a user function or an authorizer, the
write is finished on the connection's next call instead of during
garbage collection. If the database is gone too, it's rolled back.
- `bun test --bail` runs exit listeners and closes SQLite databases.
(#39010)
- Dev server: a request for a client script waits while a bundle is in
flight (#42733), query strings reach framework routes (#33232), and a
request gets a 500 instead of hanging when plugins fail (#36812).

#### File formats

- `.jsc` bytecode files get a 24-byte footer so they can be verified
before decoding. Files from an older Bun are ignored and the source is
parsed instead. (#39396)
- `node:vm` `cachedData` gets an 8-byte checksum. A blob from an older
Bun is rejected, which the API allows. (#32839)
- The built-in modules section of a compiled executable changes from
format 1 to 2 and carries an engine stamp. (#44907)

#### Performance

Measured in instructions per operation on release builds of this branch
and its base, with an A/A run for the noise floor (0.0 to 0.2 %).

No change: `Bun.serve`, `node:http`, WebSocket echo and publish, `bun
build` of 3,807 modules, `bun run` with 2,000 imports, `readdir` /
`Glob` / `fs.cp` over 23,689 entries, startup and RSS. The binary grows
by 176 KB (0.17 %).

| Faster | Instructions |
| --- | --- |
| WebSocket echo of a 1 MB non-ASCII text message | −72 % |
| `Bun.inspect` of a large non-ASCII string | −39 % |
| `Bun.markdown.html` on large non-ASCII input | −33 % |
| `` $`cmd` `` with 300 environment variables | −6 % |
| `fs.readSync` | −5 % |
| `TextEncoder.encodeInto`, short ASCII strings | −4 % |
| async `crypto.pbkdf2`, 16-byte inputs | −17 % |

| Slower | Instructions | Why |
| --- | --- | --- |
| `cc()` calls | +5 to +51 per call | Argument count and type checks,
and a check for `close()` (#37989, #38057, #43802, #44921). `dlopen()`
calls don't change |
| `process.env.X = v` | 38 → 593 per write | Writes aren't cached. Reads
don't change (#38871) |
| async `crypto.pbkdf2`, inputs of 1 KB or more | +4 to +9 % | Password
and salt are copied (#40554) |
| `bun build` with an object `--define` used thousands of times | +4.5 %
| The object is copied per use (#45969) |

#### Not included

- Fixes that need a WebKit change: #39967, #42534, #42982, #43764,
#43786, #44226. #42185 too: a typed array that has no `ArrayBuffer` yet
can't be pinned, so `view.buffer.transfer()` during an async call can
still free its bytes. Creating the `ArrayBuffer` up front costs 7 to 12
% on every async `fs` call, so the fix belongs in JSC: an `ArrayBuffer`
created while the view is borrowed should start out pinned.
- #45442 (`calc()` sums as a flat list): it changes minified output for
real stylesheets to survive a `calc()` with 25,000 terms. It deserves
its own review.
- #40023 (Windows event loop redesign), #29928 (Windows exit path),
#40534, #43963, #39571, #42904, #42834, #36355, #43266: refactors or
features whose crash is already covered or isn't a crash.
- The pull requests marked *(crash fix only)* below should stay open for
their other half.

### How did you verify your code works?

- **Tests.** Every fix has a test that fails on `main` (a release or an
ASAN build) and passes on this branch, except where that isn't
practical: code that only runs on Windows or macOS, inputs that need
several GB of memory, and a few rare races. Those were checked by hand
or by reading.
- **Stored repro scripts.** 230 crash repros ran on release and ASAN
builds of this branch and of `main`, side by side. Release: 88 no longer
crash. ASAN: 106 no longer crash. None crashes that didn't before. What
still crashes needs WebKit, is SQLite's own bug, or isn't a crash. The
ASAN number is from a later commit than the release number.
- **Dev server.** Because one fix makes requests wait, 2,171 generated
programs ran random interleavings of edits, build errors, failing
plugins, reloads, stops and disconnects with about 120,000 requests. No
request hung, was answered twice or got a stale body. `main` hung in 82
of 1,161 programs. This also found the four dev server bugs listed
above.
- **Path helpers.** 336,000 boundary cases with buffers of exactly the
computed size, and 12,003 random calls through 30 JS APIs on an ASAN
build, compared with `main`. No sanitizer report, and the results match
wherever `main` doesn't panic.
- **What worked on 1.4.3 still works.** Reviewers compared behavior with
1.4.3 and took out what changed it: for example an output directory
layout change for 9 or more entry points, a `server.reload()` change,
and a changed error message for `import("file:///50%deposit.ts")`.
- **Not run locally:** the Windows, macOS and FreeBSD code paths. CI
compiles and tests them.

Closing: main already has every source change of this PR.

Checked on main at 5c6d4e2 with a debug ASAN build on Linux x64:

  • The three "still uploading" rows that main has in worker-late-completion.test.ts pass.
  • The five rows of this PR's block, added to that file unchanged, pass with main's src/. The deinit count check was active.
  • This PR's isolation.test.ts row ("fetch() left uploading a Bun.file() body") passes with main's src/.

Coverage that main does not have, if someone wants a tests-only follow-up. I measured this with three local changes to main's FetchTasklet.rs, applied together:

  • The VmTeardown detach removed: main's three rows still pass (4 of 4 runs). LeakSanitizer still reaches the leaked request through stale stack and register values and reports nothing. With LSAN_OPTIONS=use_stacks=0:use_registers=0 it reports the request's allocations. This PR's rows count the [fetchtasklet] deinit log line and fail for the response body row and the FIFO row. That log exists on debug builds only, so the release ASAN lane depends on LeakSanitizer for these rows in both versions. I did not check that lane.
  • FetchTaskletRequestDrain::release_unrun changed to keep its ref: no row on main fails. This PR's row "a direct stream whose pull() exits the worker after a write" fails.
  • The teardown detach also used on the isolate path: no row on main fails. This PR's isolation row fails (8 live globals, limit 4).

Reopen this PR if a case here still fails on main.
