LGTM — classic getMonth() off-by-one, and the test is nicely braced against midnight rollover.
Extended reasoning...
Overview
One-line fix in src/js/node/v8.ts: getDefaultHeapSnapshotPath() was using date.getMonth() (0-based) directly in the yyyymmdd portion of the default heap snapshot filename, so every snapshot was dated one month in the past. The fix adds + 1. The existing test in test/js/bun/util/v8-heap-snapshot.test.ts is strengthened to capture the 8-digit date from the filename and assert it matches the local calendar date observed in the fixture process, with the fixture recording the date both before and after the writeHeapSnapshot() call so a run that crosses midnight can't flake.
Security risks
None. This only affects the default filename string for a locally-written heap snapshot; no user input, no auth, no network, no filesystem semantics change beyond the date digits in the name.
Level of scrutiny
Low. This is the textbook JavaScript Date#getMonth() off-by-one bug with an unambiguous one-character fix. The affected function is a convenience helper for a diagnostic feature (heap snapshot filenames), not a hot path or correctness-critical code. Node's behavior (1-based month) confirms the intended semantics.
Other factors
The bug hunter found no issues. The test change is careful: it computes the expected date inside the same subprocess that takes the snapshot (so timezone and clock match), brackets the call to tolerate midnight rollover, and keeps the existing shape/structure assertions intact via the ...rest spread. The PR description demonstrates the strengthened test fails on main and passes with the fix. No outstanding reviewer comments.

Extended reasoning...
Overview
One-line fix in src/js/node/v8.ts: getDefaultHeapSnapshotPath() used date.getMonth() directly (0-based) instead of getMonth() + 1, so default heap snapshot filenames were dated a month in the past. The rest of the diff strengthens the existing v8.writeHeapSnapshot() test to actually assert the calendar date (not just the \d{8} shape), records dateBefore/dateAfter in the fixture so a run crossing midnight can't flake, and raises the file's default timeout under debug/ASAN where each fixture snapshot takes ~4s.
Security risks
None. This only affects the auto-generated filename of a diagnostic heap snapshot written to the cwd; no parsing of untrusted input, no auth/crypto/permissions surface.
Level of scrutiny
Low. The production change is a single well-known JS idiom (getMonth() is 0-based) with an obviously correct + 1. The test changes are additive assertions on an existing test plus a debug/ASAN timeout bump — both follow established harness patterns (isDebug/isASAN from harness, fixture already runs each snapshot in its own process).
Other factors
- No CODEOWNERS entries cover the touched paths.
- Bug hunter found no issues.
- The PR description demonstrates the strengthened test fails on
mainand passes with the fix, satisfying the "test must fail for the right reason" requirement. - The midnight-bracketing (
[dateBefore, dateAfter]) is a thoughtful anti-flake measure that goes beyond what most reviewers would ask for.

LGTM — classic off-by-one getMonth() fix with a well-guarded regression test.
Extended reasoning...
Overview
The PR fixes a one-line bug in src/js/node/v8.ts: getDefaultHeapSnapshotPath() used date.getMonth() (0-based) directly in the yyyymmdd portion of the default heap-snapshot filename, so every snapshot was dated one month in the past. The fix is the textbook + 1. The existing test in test/js/bun/util/v8-heap-snapshot.test.ts is strengthened to capture the calendar date on both sides of the writeHeapSnapshot() call in the fixture and assert the filename's date field matches one of them (guarding against midnight rollover). A conditional setDefaultTimeout(60_000) for debug/ASAN builds is also added to the same test file.
Security risks
None. This is purely cosmetic filename formatting for a locally-written diagnostic file. No user input flows into the changed line, no auth/crypto/permissions are touched, and the test changes only add assertions and adjust a timeout.
Level of scrutiny
Low. The production change is a single, mechanically-obvious arithmetic correction (getMonth() + 1) that matches Node's documented behavior and the PR description's side-by-side output. The default filename is not load-bearing for any other code path — it's only used when no path is passed. The test changes are additive (a stronger assertion on an existing test) and the timeout bump is scoped to debug/ASAN only, leaving release CI budget unchanged.
Other factors
- The bug-hunting system found no issues.
- The test design is careful: bracketing the snapshot call with before/after dates and accepting either avoids the midnight-flake class explicitly, and the PR description shows the strengthened test failing on
mainand passing with the fix. - No prior human or bot reviews with outstanding comments; only CI/status bots in the timeline.
- The fixture's
calendarDate()helper independently computes the expected date rather than reusing the code under test, so the assertion is meaningful.

test/js/bun/util/v8-heap-snapshot.test.ts:7— On ASAN CI runs this file's per-test budget drops from 450s to 60s, so a slow heap-snapshot fixture now times out where the base passes. setDefaultTimeout() overrides the CLI --timeout (src/runtime/test_runner/ScopeFunctions.rs:747), and scripts/runner.node.mjs:1497 already passes --timeout=450000 for ASAN (150000 for other builds) because the path matches /v8/ in getTestTimeout. test/CLAUDE.md also says "Do not set a timeout on tests. Bun already has timeouts." Fix: drop the setDefaultTimeout(60_000) line and its comment (and the isASAN/isDebug imports) so the runner-provided timeout applies on CI; if localbun bd testneeds headroom, shrink the fixture workload instead of raising a timeout. Why this was flagged
CI runs this file through scripts/runner.node.mjs, whose getTestTimeout (scripts/runner.node.mjs:1586) returns integrationTimeout because the test path contains "v8"; spawnBunTest then passes --timeout=150000, or 450000 on ASAN (scripts/runner.node.mjs:1497). The new module-level
if (isDebug || isASAN) setDefaultTimeout(60_000)at test/js/bun/util/v8-heap-snapshot.test.ts:7 sets default_timeout_override, which ScopeFunctions.rs:747 resolves ahead of the CLI default_timeout_ms, so every test in the file gets 60s on ASAN instead of 450s. The comment on lines 5-6 says the goal is more room, but on the ASAN lane the change removes 390s of headroom per test; a loaded runner where a fixture exceeds 60s now fails while the base branch passes. test/CLAUDE.md "No timeouts" ("Do not set a timeout on tests. Bun already has timeouts.") prohibits this line; the gating helpers isDebug (test/harness.ts:27) and isASAN (test/harness.ts:54) are real, so the override does fire on those lanes.Verification: test/js/bun/util/v8-heap-snapshot.test.ts:7 has
if (isDebug || isASAN) setDefaultTimeout(60_000);. src/runtime/test_runner/ScopeFunctions.rs:747 resolvestimeout_option_ms.or(override_timeout_ms).or(default_timeout_ms), so the override takes precedence over the CLI--timeout. scripts/runner.node.mjs:1497 passes 150000 ms, or 450000 ms on ASAN; after the PR the same tests get 60 s.

Beyond the inline finding, I also checked the new .expect in js_heap_snapshot_filename (src/jsc/BunCPUProfiler.rs:331-344): with every field a 32-bit integer the worst-case name is exactly 119 bytes, so the 128-byte buffer cannot overflow. Bun__msToGregorianDateTime (src/jsc/bindings/bindings.cpp:6023) returns a 1-based month, so the old getMonth() off-by-one is not reintroduced; WebWorker::thread_id() matches the - 1 that Worker.cpp:330 and JSWorker.cpp:447 apply for threadId; and the Windows SystemTime struct already declares day_of_week in SYSTEMTIME order, so the cfg(windows) arm should type-check.
Extended reasoning...
The change moves the default heap-snapshot file name from a JS formatter in node:v8 into the Rust DiagnosticFilename generator shared with --cpu-prof/--heap-prof, adds a process-wide sequence counter drawn at profiler start, and wires one new js2native host function; it touches no auth, crypto, or untrusted-input parsing surface. The codegen name derivation (jsc_bun_cpu_profiler_js_heap_snapshot_filename) matches the dispatch re-export, the config fields are private so no stray struct-literal construction site can bypass the new constructors, and no remaining test asserts the old Heap- name shape. The one confirmed inline finding is a Windows-only timing flake in the new test; otherwise the diff is consistent with its description.

I re-reviewed the latest push and found no bugs; a human maintainer should still weigh in because this renames the default v8.writeHeapSnapshot() output with no flag, and the description explicitly asks which release should take that rename.
What was reviewed:
js_heap_snapshot_filename:Bun__msToGregorianDateTimeemits a 1-based month,WebWorker::thread_id()matchesWorker.cpp'sworkerContextIdentifier() - 1, and the 128-byte buffer holds the worst-case 66-byte name, so the.expectis an invariant, not a user-reachable panic.- Sequence draw order:
CPUProfilerConfig::new/HeapProfilerConfig::newtake numbers only for default-named profiles, and thetest.eachmatrix in heap-prof.test.ts pins the resulting numbering across the flag combinations. - The Windows date window in heap-prof.test.ts now includes
after, which closes the midnight-crossing gap raised on the previous push.
Extended reasoning...
The change replaces the JS-side default heap snapshot name in src/js/node/v8.ts with a native generator in src/jsc/BunCPUProfiler.rs, threads thread id, time and sequence through write_diagnostic_filename, adds constructors to both profiler configs, and registers one new js2native host function; tests were added for the name shape, the shared counter across Workers, mocked clock, TZ, and profiler/snapshot sequence interleaving. It touches no auth, crypto, or input-parsing surface. No CODEOWNERS entry covers the changed files. It is not approved outright because the user-visible default filename changes without a flag and the author has an open question for a maintainer about which release takes that rename, which is a product decision rather than a correctness one.
There was a problem hiding this comment.
I reviewed the latest push (0da9d9a, 94e63be) and found no bugs; both points raised in my earlier inline comments are addressed by these commits, so what remains is the maintainer call the description asks for (whether a no-flag default-name change ships in a patch release), which a human should make.
What was reviewed:
- The new
js_heap_snapshot_filenamehost function: the js2native path/symbol derivation (jsc_bun_cpu_profiler_js_heap_snapshot_filename) matches the dispatch re-export,Bun__msToGregorianDateTimealready returns a 1-based month, and the 128-byte buffer bound (max 119 bytes with all-i32 fields) holds, so the.expectis a provable invariant. - Every caller of
write_diagnostic_filename/ both profiler config struct literals was updated; no stale cfg-gated call sites remain. - The
--cpu-prof/--heap-profsequence draw happens once innew()at start, so flag-named profiles still draw 0 and the test matrix ordering (CPU 001, md 002, Heap 003...) follows from the constructor order. - Test windows: the heap-prof Windows day window now spans both ends of the run, and the names fixture reads the real clock around the mocked-
DateandTZcalls so each assertion can fail.
Extended reasoning...
The change replaces the JS-side default heap snapshot name formatter in src/js/node/v8.ts with a native Rust host function in src/jsc/BunCPUProfiler.rs, hoists the diagnostic sequence counter to a process-wide atomic, threads thread id/time/sequence through write_diagnostic_filename, and makes the CPU/heap profiler configs draw their sequence numbers at start via new constructors used in src/runtime/cli/run_command.rs. It touches no auth, crypto, or input-parsing surface; the only unsafe is the pre-existing getpid/localtime_r. The code checks out and no CODEOWNER covers the changed files, but the PR deliberately changes a user-visible default filename without a flag and explicitly asks a maintainer which release should take the rename, which is a product decision rather than a correctness question, and an unresolved third-party inline comment on test/cli/heap-prof.test.ts dated after the second commit cannot be judged from metadata alone.

State of the review at 94e63be:
One decision is open, and it is for a maintainer: which release takes the new default name. The description lists the three options under Notes. |
…me generator v8.writeHeapSnapshot() with no path formatted its own file name in JS and used Date#getMonth() as the month, so the name was one month behind (00 in January). That formatter had no sequence number, so two calls in the same second returned one name and the second overwrote the first snapshot. The name now comes from write_diagnostic_filename, the port of node's DiagnosticFilename that --cpu-prof and --heap-prof already use: Heap.<yyyymmdd>.<hhmmss>.<pid>.<thread id>.<sequence>.heapsnapshot. The generator takes the thread id, the local time and the sequence number as arguments. The profilers draw their sequence numbers when they start, as node does, so a snapshot written while the program runs gets a later number than the profile. WebWorker::thread_id() is the accessor from #34424. Co-authored-by: Ciro Spaciari <ciro.spaciari@gmail.com>
…hot() The comments this change adds are one line each. The name tests call v8.writeHeapSnapshot() with Bun.generateHeapSnapshot replaced by a stub, from a fixture of their own with module-scope imports. The shared fixture is as it is on main. The profile sequence cases in heap-prof.test.ts are smaller and need no timeout of their own, and their date window on Windows covers both ends of the run.
Each case spawns its own process in its own directory. On a debug build six children at once take 3.7 to 8.0 s each, over the 5 s default of `bun bd test`, so the cases stay sequential there.
The tests that this change adds or edits finish inside the 5 s default of `bun bd test` on a debug build, so the file sets no limit of its own.

Beyond the inline nit, I also checked that the new native path cannot reintroduce the month-off-by-one this PR fixes: JSC's GregorianDateTime::month() is 0-based, but Bun__msToGregorianDateTime in src/jsc/bindings/bindings.cpp:6015 adds 1 before handing it to Rust, so js_heap_snapshot_filename and the libc tm_mon + 1 path agree. The 128-byte stack buffer also holds the worst case (all 32-bit fields at max width is under 120 bytes), so the .expect there is unreachable.
Extended reasoning...
The change moves the default v8.writeHeapSnapshot() name into the native DiagnosticFilename generator in src/jsc/BunCPUProfiler.rs, adds eager sequence draws to the CPU/heap profiler configs, and wires a new js2native host function; it touches no security-sensitive surface. One test nit was reported inline, and this note only records the two adjacent concerns that were examined and ruled out.
The fixture now records Date.now() while setSystemTime is active, and the test checks that value before it checks that the name keeps the real clock.
There was a problem hiding this comment.
I re-reviewed the latest push and found no bugs; the two nits I raised earlier (the Windows day window in heap-prof.test.ts, and asserting that setSystemTime took effect in the names fixture) are addressed by the newest commits. Because this renames a user-visible default (Heap-... to Node's dotted form with a sequence number) and the description explicitly asks a maintainer which release should take that rename, a human look is still worthwhile.
What was reviewed:
js_heap_snapshot_filename:Bun__msToGregorianDateTimewrites a 1-based month, so the DateCache and libc paths agree; the 128-byte buffer bound is provable from the i32/u32 field widths;thread_id()matches theworkerContextIdentifier() - 1thatworker.threadIduses.- js2native wiring: the codegen's
snake()mapsBunCPUProfiler.rs+jsHeapSnapshotFilenameto the exact re-export name in dispatch_js2native.rs. - Refactor of
write_diagnostic_filename/local_time_now/config constructors: every caller (CPU json/md, heap profiler, run_command.rs) is updated and the formatted output for the profilers is unchanged; no remaining assertions on the oldHeap-name in tests or docs.
Extended reasoning...
The change replaces the JS-side default heap snapshot filename in src/js/node/v8.ts with a new Rust host function in src/jsc/BunCPUProfiler.rs, unifies a process-global sequence counter across CPU/heap profilers and heap snapshots, and threads thread id, time and sequence through write_diagnostic_filename, with new tests in test/cli/heap-prof.test.ts and test/js/bun/util/v8-heap-snapshot.test.ts. It touches no security-sensitive surface: the only user input is a stack-formatted filename written to cwd, same as before. No CODEOWNER covers the changed files and the bug hunt ran dry, but the PR deliberately changes a user-visible default name without a flag and the author poses a release-timing question to maintainers, which is a product decision rather than a correctness one, so I deferred instead of approving.
