I didn't find any bugs, but this adds ~150 lines of new C++ touching VM lifecycle, cross-thread lock ownership, and exit-time teardown ordering in both the main global object and Worker paths — worth a human pass to confirm the threading/lifetime invariants hold.
Extended reasoning...
Overview
This PR fixes a 100% reproducible segfault in jsc.startSamplingProfiler(directory) by replacing a write to JSC's frozen Options::samplingProfilerPath() with a new Bun-side singleton (BunSamplingProfilerReporter.{h,cpp}) that stores (Ref<SamplingProfiler>, Ref<VM>, CString directory) entries and writes the report either at VM teardown (WebWorker__teardownJSCVM, Zig__GlobalObject__destructOnExit) or at process exit via Bun__atexit. It also hooks the new reportSamplingProfilerBeforeVMTeardown call into ZigGlobalObject.cpp and Worker.cpp, swaps the crashing line in BunJSCModule.h, and adds two subprocess-based tests plus a small workload reduction in an adjacent test.
Security risks
None apparent. The directory path comes from the calling JS and is used only to fopen a report file under it — no new privilege boundaries, network, or auth surfaces. The change is in a debugging/profiling utility.
Level of scrutiny
Moderate-to-high. While the feature itself (bun:jsc sampling profiler report-at-exit) is a niche debugging tool, the implementation reaches into critical paths: it holds a Ref<VM> that affects when ~VM runs, inserts a call into WebWorker__teardownJSCVM with a documented ordering constraint relative to setHasTerminationRequest() and the final deref, and relies on the invariant that a Bun VM's API lock is held by its owner thread for that thread's whole lifetime to decide which entries are safe to report at process exit without deadlocking. The comments are thorough and the reasoning is plausible, but these are exactly the kind of cross-thread lifetime invariants a maintainer familiar with web_worker.rs / VM teardown should sanity-check.
Other factors
The bug-hunting system found no issues, CodeRabbit's nits were addressed in 899cc11, and the new tests cover both the main-thread exit path and the worker-teardown path. The CI failures on musl builds look like unrelated LTO/linker infrastructure problems ("Linking two modules of different data layouts ... regular-lto-flag-stub.bc"), not something this change caused. Still, ~150 lines of new lock-guarded C++ with VM-ref lifetime effects in teardown paths is beyond what I'd auto-approve.

Overview
Fixes a 100% segfault in jsc.startSamplingProfiler(directory) caused by writing to JSC's frozen Options::samplingProfilerPath() at runtime. Replaces it with a new Bun-side SamplingProfilerExitReporter singleton (src/jsc/bindings/BunSamplingProfilerReporter.{h,cpp}, ~150 lines new C++) that stores (Ref<SamplingProfiler>, Ref<VM>, CString directory) entries and writes reports either at VM teardown or at process exit via Bun__atexit. Hooks the teardown call into Zig__GlobalObject__destructOnExit and WebWorker__teardownJSCVM. Also adds two subprocess tests and shrinks an adjacent test's fib workload.
Security risks
None. This is a developer-tooling/profiling code path with no untrusted input beyond a directory path that was already accepted before; the only file write goes to a path the caller explicitly supplied.
Level of scrutiny
Moderate-to-high. The change itself is well-scoped and exhaustively commented, but it touches core VM lifecycle: it holds a strong Ref<VM> in a NeverDestroyed global, relies on reportSamplingProfilerBeforeVMTeardown being called on every teardown path to release that ref so ~VM can run and shut the sampling thread down, takes JSLockHolder while holding the singleton's Lock, and gates the atexit path on currentThreadIsHoldingAPILock() to avoid deadlocking on a live worker's VM. The ordering constraints in WebWorker__teardownJSCVM (after setHasTerminationRequest(), before the final deref) are subtle and only documented in comments. Several lifecycle combinations (natural worker exit, worker alive at process.exit, BUN_DESTRUCT_VM_ON_EXIT=1) were verified manually rather than by automated tests.
Other factors
The bug-hunting system found nothing; CodeRabbit's three minor test-style comments were all addressed in 899cc11. The one CI failure (test/regression/issue/30205.test.ts on x64-asan) is in an unrelated file. The implementation looks correct to me on reading — the lock-ordering argument (singleton lock → recursive JSLock only for VMs the caller already owns) holds up — but VM-refcount/exit-path changes are exactly where a second pair of eyes pays off.

I didn't find any bugs, but this introduces a new cross-thread singleton that pins Ref<VM> and hooks into both VM-teardown paths — subtle enough lifetime/ordering territory that a maintainer should sign off, and the July 1 comment proposes a simpler per-VM alternative that's worth a human deciding on before merge.
Extended reasoning...
Overview
The PR fixes a 100%-repro segfault in jsc.startSamplingProfiler(directory) caused by writing to JSC's frozen Options::samplingProfilerPath() at runtime. It replaces that with a new Bun-side mechanism: BunSamplingProfilerReporter.{h,cpp} implements a process-global NeverDestroyed singleton holding (Ref<SamplingProfiler>, Ref<VM>, CString) entries under a lock, wired into three lifecycle points — Bun__atexit for process exit, WebWorker__teardownJSCVM for worker VM teardown, and Zig__GlobalObject__destructOnExit for the main VM under BUN_DESTRUCT_VM_ON_EXIT. Two subprocess tests cover the main-thread and worker cases.
Security risks
None. The feature is a diagnostics/profiling API; the only external input is a directory path already handled by the pre-existing Bun__mkdirp call. No auth, crypto, network, or untrusted-parsing surface is touched.
Level of scrutiny
High. The core fix (stop writing to frozen config) is straightforward, but the replacement design is not: it pins Ref<VM> in a process-global registry, relies on precise ordering relative to setHasTerminationRequest() and the teardown deref (comments explain a hang if the VM outlives its owner thread), gates the atexit path on currentThreadIsHoldingAPILock() to avoid deadlocking on live workers, and deliberately leaks entries at exit to avoid triggering ~VM inside the exit callback. These are exactly the memory-safety/threading invariants CLAUDE.md flags as most-blocked in review, and the hooks land in shared teardown paths that affect every VM regardless of whether profiling was used (no-op when the registry is empty, but still on the path).
Other factors
- The July 1 timeline comment (from the same automated author) describes an independently-written alternative on
farm/d8f786e6/jsc-sampling-profiler-segvthat stores the directory on the per-VMVirtualMachinenext to existing--cpu-profconfig and writes fromVirtualMachine::on_exit, avoiding the global registry,Ref<VM>pinning, and teardown hooks entirely. That's a material architectural alternative a maintainer should weigh — CLAUDE.md's "simplest mechanism the invariants allow" and "store state on the object whose lifetime matches it" both point toward the per-VM approach. - The PR also shrinks an adjacent test's
fib(30)→fib(26)workload; the description justifies it, but it's a change to an existing test's coverage that wasn't visible in the diff I reviewed (the diff shows only additions to the test file, so this may already be on main or was mis-described). - Bug-hunting found nothing; CodeRabbit's minor test-style comments were addressed. CI is reported green with unrelated flakes.

No bugs found, but this introduces a new C++ subsystem (process-global SamplingProfilerExitReporter singleton holding Ref<VM>/Ref<SamplingProfiler>) with hooks into both VM teardown paths, and you've explicitly flagged an open architectural choice (this global-registry approach vs. the per-VM VirtualMachine::on_exit variant on farm/d8f786e6) for a maintainer to decide — so this should get a human look.
What was reviewed:
- Checked the
Ref<VM>pin is released on the teardown path before the final deref so~VMstill runs and shuts the sampling thread down. - Checked
reportStillRegisteredAtExitskips VMs whose API lock the exiting thread doesn't hold, so it can't deadlock on a live worker. - Verified the Worker.cpp hook ordering after the rebase (after
setHasTerminationRequest()/markTerminating(), before the deref) matches the constraints in the comment. - Tests: both new subprocess tests use
tempDir/bunEnv, drain pipes concurrently, and assert stderr/stdout/exitCode in the right order.
Extended reasoning...
Overview
The PR fixes a 100%-repro segfault in jsc.startSamplingProfiler(directory) caused by writing to Options::samplingProfilerPath() after JSC's Config pages are mprotected read-only. It replaces that write with a new Bun-side mechanism: BunSamplingProfilerReporter.{h,cpp} implements a NeverDestroyed process-global singleton holding (Ref<SamplingProfiler>, Ref<VM>, CString directory) entries, guarded by a WTF::Lock. Reports are written either at process exit via Bun__atexit (only for VMs whose API lock the exiting thread already holds) or at explicit VM teardown via new reportSamplingProfilerBeforeVMTeardown calls inserted into WebWorker__teardownJSCVM and Zig__GlobalObject__destructOnExit. Two subprocess tests exercise the main-VM-exit and worker-teardown paths.
Security risks
None identified. The directory path is user-supplied but only reaches Bun__mkdirp and FilePrintStream::open for writing; there's no injection surface, and this is a debugging/profiling API in bun:jsc, not production-facing.
Level of scrutiny
High. This is native C++ touching JSC VM lifecycle and reference counting across threads:
- Holding a
Ref<VM>in a process-global keeps the VM alive; releasing it at the wrong time relative to teardown could either leak the VM (blocking~VM→ sampling thread never shuts down → process hang) or race with destruction. The PR handles this by removing the entry inreportAndRemovebefore the caller's final deref, and by deliberately never releasing entries in the atexit path (NeverDestroyed). - The atexit callback's
currentThreadIsHoldingAPILock()gate relies on the invariant that a Bun VM's owner thread holds the API lock for its whole lifetime — a subtle cross-subsystem assumption documented in the comment but worth a maintainer's eye. - The Worker.cpp insertion point has two ordering constraints (after
setHasTerminationRequest()because of the profiler'sDeferTerminationassertion; before the deref so~VMcan run). The recent rebase re-resolved a conflict at exactly this insertion point.
Other factors
The decisive factor is that the PR author explicitly surfaced an architectural alternative (store the directory on the per-VM VirtualMachine next to --cpu-prof config and write from VirtualMachine::on_exit, avoiding the global registry, Ref<VM> pin, and teardown hooks) and stated they are "leaving the choice to a maintainer." That is a design decision a human should make, not an automated approver. The bug-hunting system found no correctness issues, and CI was reported green on the last pre-rebase build with only unrelated flakes; the current build (#72312) is in progress.

startSamplingProfiler with a directory argument assigned Options::samplingProfilerPath() at runtime. JSC option storage lives in the Config pages that Config::permanentlyFreeze() mprotects read-only during startup, so the assignment was a write to a read-only page and crashed every time. The stored pointer would also have dangled (it pointed into a function-local CString), and the atexit-based report mechanism never fires on Linux because Bun exits through quick_exit. Keep the directory on the Bun side instead: a registry of (profiler, vm, directory) entries writes the same report as SamplingProfiler::reportDataToOptionFile() through Bun__atexit for VMs still alive at process exit, and through the VM teardown paths (WebWorker__teardownJSCVM, Zig__GlobalObject__destructOnExit) for VMs torn down earlier. Reporting at worker teardown, on the worker thread, matters twice over: holding the VM past teardown would keep ~VM from shutting the sampling thread down (it then wedges trying to suspend the dead worker thread), and a VM's API lock is held by its owner thread for that thread's whole lifetime, so the exit callback can only safely report VMs whose lock the exiting thread already holds. Also shrinks the fib workload in the adjacent "profile can be called multiple times" test (fib(30) -> fib(26), three calls) so the file fits the debug ASAN time budget; all assertions are unchanged and the 50us sample interval still guarantees multiple samples per call.

…on_exit Replaces the process-global registry (BunSamplingProfilerReporter) with per-VM state, matching REVIEW.md's rule and the cpu/heap profiler precedent: the directory lives on VirtualMachine next to cpu_profiler_config, and VirtualMachine::on_exit writes the report, which already runs once per VM (main thread and workers) on the VM's own thread with the VM alive and the API lock held. This removes the singleton, the Ref<VM> pin, the Bun__atexit hook, and the destroyVM ordering constraint. Also from review: the directory is resolved to an absolute path when the profiler starts (the report is written at exit, when the working directory may have changed), directories with embedded null bytes are rejected, and the worker test now rejects on early close and asserts the report is non-empty.

WTF::FileSystem::pathByAppendingComponent goes through libstdc++'s std::filesystem, whose internal string frees bypass mimalloc; on musl that frees a mimalloc allocation with mallocng and segfaults at exit (glibc builds masked it because mimalloc interposes malloc there). Join the report path with makeString instead, like JSC's own reportDataToOptionFile. Also mirror the sampling profiler flush into Bun__writeProfilesBeforeSelfKill so process.kill(process.pid) with no handler writes the report like the CPU and heap profiles, and assert the null-byte rejection throws specifically a TypeError in the test.

I reviewed the latest revision and found no further issues — every earlier finding (per-VM storage, self-kill flush, sampling-before-CPU ordering, worker-close rejection, TypeError assertion) is addressed and all comment-cop flags are resolved. Because this touches native VM-lifecycle code across the C++/Rust FFI boundary (worker termination + SuspendExceptionScope, on_exit / Bun__writeProfilesBeforeSelfKill), a human look is still worthwhile.

Overview
Fixes a 100%-reproducible segfault in bun:jsc's startSamplingProfiler(directory) (issue #32212): the old code assigned Options::samplingProfilerPath() at runtime, which is a write to an mprotect'd read-only Config page. The fix stores the directory as per-VM state on VirtualMachine (next to the existing cpu_profiler_config / heap_profiler_config), and VirtualMachine::on_exit plus Bun__writeProfilesBeforeSelfKill write the report via a new C++ helper Bun__SamplingProfiler__reportToDirectory. Six files touched: BunJSCModule.h (C++), BunCPUProfiler.rs / VirtualMachine.rs / virtual_machine_exports.rs (Rust FFI + VM state), jsc.d.ts (doc tweak), and three new subprocess tests in bun-jsc.test.ts.
Security risks
None identified. The directory string is user-controlled but is validated (embedded NUL rejected before it reaches the C string passed to Bun__mkdirp), created via the existing Bun__mkdirp helper, and written under an explicit filename (samplingProfile.<pid>.<tid>.txt) via FileSystem::overwriteEntireFile. No untrusted length arithmetic, no network, no privilege boundary.
Level of scrutiny
High. This is native code across a C++/Rust FFI boundary that runs during VM teardown (main-thread on_exit, worker termination with a pending JSC termination exception, and the process.kill(self) fast path). It integrates with JSC internals (SamplingProfiler, JSLockHolder, SuspendExceptionScope, DeferTermination interaction) and shares state with --cpu-prof. That said, the shape now exactly mirrors the two existing profiler flushes at both call sites, and the earlier process-global-singleton design was replaced with the repository-conventional per-VM approach after review.
Other factors
This PR has been through five rounds of my own review; every finding was addressed in a follow-up commit (per-VM redesign in 51efccc, self-kill flush + makeString musl fix in d53133f, sampling-before-CPU ordering in d8c9e15). All CodeRabbit and comment-cop threads are resolved. The bug-hunting pass on this revision found nothing. Three subprocess tests cover main thread, worker teardown, and relative-path + chdir + NUL rejection. Given the native/lifecycle surface, I'm deferring rather than approving so a maintainer can confirm the SuspendExceptionScope-around-reportTop* handling for terminated workers and the Windows path-join behavior.
