Thanks for the suggestion! I’m currently working on a new WYSIWYG editor that includes word and character counts. It’s still too early to release, but this will be available in a future update. I’ll keep this issue open until then.
Following up on my earlier reply: the count doesn't have to wait for the new editor. Added in 28e1792, and it ships in Tinta 3.7.5: the editor shows a word and character count in its bottom-left corner, next to the Read · Ctrl+Shift+E button. It counts the text a reader sees, so Markdown syntax, link addresses, front matter, code blocks and formulas are left out. As in Word, each Chinese or Japanese character counts as one word; characters include spaces but not line breaks. While text is selected it shows the selection and the total, for example 12 / 345. You can turn it off in Settings → Editor → Word count.
