Feature summary

There was already an issue with the same request (#3817), but it was resolved in a way not related to its topic, because its author had no problem with tooltips on its own.

Motivation / use case

My rationale for this proposal is a bit different. We may separate all the existing bar implementations into two categories: 1) display-only bars, 2) modern bars.

Display-only bars don't have advanced widgets support and mostly they can only display information configured by the user. They usually support some interactions like clicking and scrolling over its elements, but that's it. Waybar is an example of display-only bar.

Modern bars it something you can find in a popular DE like Gnome or KDE. These bars support advanced widgets that support some sort of menus and other things. The bar provided by Noctalia is a modern bar.

There may exist better naming to distinguish these things of which I'm not aware. Sorry if that's the case.

So in a display-only bar tooltips provide useful information. Like in a widget that displays network status it may provide additional useful information about your current network connection so you don't have to open a terminal to get information you need. If your "active window" widget doesn't have enough space to display the full title, the tooltip might too provide you with that information.

On the other hand, in modern bars you usually don't really need tooltips. Your network widget will show you all the information you need when expanded on click. Noctalia active_window widget can scroll the title. And so on.

Currently, if you configure active_window to scroll the title on hover, when you move the cursor over the title it scrolls the title and displays the tooltip which is kinda irritating. And it's not configurable.

Proposed solution

As was suggested in a linked issue, add a per-widget option such as:

[widget.cpu_usage]
type = "sysmon"
stat = "cpu_usage"
tooltip_enabled = false

Having a bar default would be nice too, I guess:

[bar.default]
tooltips_enabled = true
