What

Closes #295.

Builder.BCC()/BCCAddrs() never emit a Bcc header in the message produced by Build(); the addresses are used only as SMTP envelope recipients by Send()/SendWithReversePath(). That is correct behaviour per RFC 5322 §3.6.3 (blind-copy recipients must not appear in the header section of the transmitted message), not an encoding bug — but the issue shows users reasonably reading the empty header as a bug.

This is a documentation-only change:

  • Expand the doc comments for BCC(), BCCAddrs(), GetBCC() and Build() to state that no Bcc header is written, explain the envelope-recipient mechanism, and note the implications (forwarding/archiving loses the blind copies; add your own header if the recipients must be recorded in the message).
  • Add a comment at the header-assembly site in Build() noting the deliberate omission.
  • Add a "Note on BCC" section to the README with a link to the RFC.

No functional changes; the existing TestBuilderBCC/TestBuilderBCCAddrs assertions already capture this behaviour.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Documentation
    • Clarified that BCC() and BCCAddrs() recipients are omitted from the message’s Bcc: header when building a message and are sent as SMTP envelope recipients.
    • Documented that explicitly supplied header values, including a Bcc: header, are preserved when building.
    • Added guidance to use Header() when you want a Bcc: header included in the message.

Per RFC 5322 section 3.6.3, blind-copy recipients must not appear in the
header section of a transmitted message. enmime's builder therefore
holds BCC addresses aside and delivers them as SMTP envelope recipients
via Send()/SendWithReversePath(), so Build() never emits a Bcc header.

Expand the docs for BCC, BCCAddrs, GetBCC and Build to make this explicit
and note it in the README, so callers don't read the empty header as a bug.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The README and builder comments explain that Build() omits builder BCC addresses from generated headers. They describe those addresses as envelope recipients for sending and explain that values supplied through Header(), including Bcc, are copied unchanged.

Builder comments describe BCC address handling in Build() and sending. The README documents the expected header omission, SMTP envelope use, and how to add a Bcc header through Header().

This documentation-only change explains how BCC addresses are handled by the builder. It carries no runtime risk and is ready to merge.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 67b7e

No sending behavior changes, but the new documentation could lead callers to rely on a BCC privacy guarantee that does not hold when they add a Bcc header themselves.

Retained concerns

  • Low · security · inferred: The new public documentation says a built message never contains Bcc and that its Bcc header is always empty. A caller-supplied Bcc header is instead retained and can be encoded for delivery, so the assurance is unsafe to use as a privacy guarantee.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — Exposure from this discrepancy depends on a caller supplying a Bcc header and relying on the new unconditional assurance; the PR does not establish a new attacker-controlled entrypoint.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — If a caller supplies Bcc as a header, Build retains it and the send path encodes it into the message passed for delivery. This predates the PR; the introduced risk is the conflicting privacy assurance, not a new header-writing path.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — BCC addresses supplied through the BCC methods are kept separate from generated message headers, while caller-supplied headers are copied into the message. The README warns about the latter choice.

- Around line 134-135: Update the Bcc documentation near Build() to describe
omission as enmime’s behavior for addresses supplied through BCCAddrs, not as an
RFC requirement. Clarify that caller-supplied Bcc headers added with AddHeader
are copied into the returned header.
- Line 135: Qualify the Bcc documentation in the comments near Build() to state
that automatically generated headers omit Bcc and Header.Get("Bcc") is empty
only when the caller has not supplied a custom Bcc header. Apply the same
qualification to the corresponding claim in README.md, preserving
caller-supplied header behavior.

Frame the missing Bcc header as enmime's behaviour rather than an RFC
mandate (RFC 5322 3.6.3 permits other options), and note that headers
set with Header() are copied through unchanged, including Bcc. Shorten
the comments and README note while doing so.
