I would like a way to construct a read::Error object from an std::io::Error object.

That's not possible. You'll need to create your own error type that can hold them both.

I don't think constructing a read::Error from a std::io::Error will help you with that, because ReadRef uses ()
For example, ReadCache converts std::io::Error to(). I realise this is not ideal.

Maybe you can store it somewhere and check afterwards to see if an IO error occurred.

Possibly what we want is for ReadRef to have an associated type for its error, and for read::Error to be able to store that and return it for Error::source. Ideally I would want that context to have zero overhead when reading from &[u8] though.
