QA: e2e pass on v2.2.0-rc.1 (macOS, Windows) #1431

Open

Description

@EtienneLescot

Tracking the manual e2e pass on the signed v2.2.0-rc.1 artifacts (build run 40886447727), driven with real OS input on the Mac mini M1 and a Windows 11 Vivobook. Linux was covered on main @ 5d82a0c in #1422.

Scope: minimal pass (install, record with camera and mic, edit, zoom, export, reopen) plus the changes since v2.1.2. Results go to technical-documentation/testing/manual-e2e-checklist.md.

macOS (M1, macOS 27.0.1) on the signed v2.2.0-rc.1 DMG: no new product defect, one known blocker on updates (#1432).

    • Install: the arm64 DMG from the pre-release is notarized and stapled, Gatekeeper accepts it, and the TCC grants survived the reinstall.
    • Blocker: the .app ships without app-update.yml, so every background check fails with ENOENT and macOS can never update in place → fix: ship app-update.yml in the macOS app so it can update itself #1432.
    • Pass: HUD (camera, mic, system audio), Apple's picker with a screen take and a window take, editor and playback, a zoom region, MP4 1080p (60 fps, no frame gaps, audio present, zoom visible), GIF (15 fps, loops, zoom visible), reopening after a relaunch.
    • Changes since v2.1.2: mic and system audio are told apart (mic tone present, speaker tone silent with system audio off), VP8 webcam stays continuous, the cursor track matches the real clicks to the pixel, playback restarts from the start after the end, and the MCP server announces a newer version without offering to update.
    • Not covered: the update button and click-to-install (no rc.2 yet), cursor on a window take, 10-bit and full-range clips in the editor preview, pause/resume, tray.

Details are in the e2e checklist log row (local commit, not pushed yet).

Windows 11 (Vivobook, AMD Radeon integrated) on the v2.2.0-rc.1 NSIS installer, per-machine: no rc.1 regression, one update-install defect candidate.

Driven with real OS clicks via computer-use, on the machine itself.

    • Pass: HUD (camera, mic), screen and window takes, editor and playback, replay from the end, zoom, MP4 1080p60 export (no frame gaps, audio present), GIF export, save and reopen after a relaunch.
    • Changes since v2.1.2: forced DXGI fallback (cursor at the right size and spot), whisper-stt under an accented temp path, stacked annotation tracks, MCP update notice.
    • Update in place (feat(update): background checks and an update button #1425), local feed: silent download, blue button in the HUD and the editor, hidden during a take, quitting installs nothing.
    • Defect candidate: the click opens the full NSIS wizard instead of just UAC (quitAndInstall(false, true), unchanged since v2.1.2). With an old per-user install present, it preselected Just for me; All users updated fine but uninstalled the per-user copy. Not yet reproduced with a single install, so no issue opened.
    • Not covered: system audio (speaker muted), tray red icon, the updater-failure fallback, the timeline layout animation.

Details are in the e2e checklist log row (local commit, not pushed yet).

Windows follow-up: the update-install defect candidate is confirmed with a single per-machine install. The click runs the installer without /S and opens the NSIS wizard before UAC. The update still lands and the app comes back. Not a 2.2.0 regression (same call in v2.1.2) → #1437.

    macOS (M1, macOS 27.0.1), main @ f9a306f with #1432: fixed, in-place update works.

Tested the signed DMG from build run 41114748796.

    • app-update.yml is now in the .app (provider: github), and the bundle is still notarized and valid.
    • No more ENOENT: no [updates] error after more than a minute (rc.1 logged it at about one minute).
    • In-place update with a local feed offering 9.9.9:
      • The blue button shows in the HUD and the editor, with no dialog.
      • It leaves the HUD during a take and comes back after.
      • Quitting with the button showing installs nothing.
      • The click installs (ShipIt), relaunches the app, and app-update.yml is back to provider: github.
    • Doc note: editing app-update.yml broke the seal, yet Squirrel still installed. So the checklist's "on macOS only the RC path works" is too strict, at least on macOS 27.
    • Not covered: a real GitHub feed with a newer version (needs an rc.2 that has fix: ship app-update.yml in the macOS app so it can update itself #1432), the release-page fallback, the tray item.

Details are in the e2e checklist log row (local commit, not pushed yet).
