Summary
This branch combines the smaller review branches that I have created so a fork
can use all fixes together immediately.

The individual PRs are kept separate for upstream reviewability. This branch is
for immediate fork usage and for proving that all branches merge cleanly and pass
together.
Conflict resolution
Merging
fix/bootstrap-argumentconflicted indev/_bootstrap-tests.nixwiththe public writer target tests. The conflict was resolved by keeping both sets of
tests.
