A fresh clone can install, build, and run the CLI and dashboard without this tailnet.

  • Dev server accepts localhost, IP addresses, and any *.ts.net name. Other hostnames stay blocked.
  • README setup, connect, download, bench, and Tailscale steps use local or placeholder URLs.
  • cli.cjs tells you to build the native binary instead of claiming linux-x64 is unsupported.
  • CI still typechecks, lints, and tests on pull requests, with no secrets. setup-vp is pinned to v1.21.2.
  • Added CONTRIBUTING.md.

There is still no LICENSE file. I did not add one.

Left PR #9's files alone (parsers.ts, usage/index.ts, pricing-editor.ts, PricingDialog.svelte, and the Muse edits around them).

Important files:

README.md

  • Replaces the private Nexus URL with the local setup a new checkout can actually run.
  • Documents Vite+ install, the dev host allowlist, absolute download directories, and bun run test.

vite.config.ts

  • Allows Tailscale MagicDNS names and keeps port 5173.
  • Drops the single-machine hostname that returned 403 for every other host.

cli.cjs

  • Separates "platform not supported" from "native binary has not been built yet".

.github/workflows/verify.yml

  • Pins voidzero-dev/setup-vp to v1.21.2. The floating v1 tag is frozen and no longer updated.
  • Names the existing typecheck, lint, and test steps. Still no secrets.

CONTRIBUTING.md

  • Short setup and the same checks CI runs.

scripts/benchmark-rpc.ts

  • Defaults bun run bench to http://127.0.0.1:8787.

src/cli/app.ts

  • Adds the missing status and disconnect help text.

Note

Make a fresh checkout work without a private tailnet

  • Replaces private tailnet URLs with local loopback defaults: bun run bench now targets 127.0.0.1:8787 when no origin is given (scripts/benchmark-rpc.ts, PERFORMANCE.md)
  • Rewrites README.md and adds CONTRIBUTING.md to document setup without tailnet access: Vite+ install, Node/Bun versions, local package builds, and Tailscale deployment with placeholder values
  • cli.cjs now distinguishes unsupported platforms from a missing native binary on a supported one, and prints recovery instructions for the latter
  • Vite dev server uses strict port 5173 and allows .ts.net hosts for dev and preview (vite.config.ts)
  • Pins voidzero-dev/setup-vp to 1.21.2 and names the CI verification steps (.github/workflows/verify.yml)
  • Behavioral Change: bun run bench falls back to the local dashboard instead of the private remote one; Vite dev server exits instead of picking another port when 5173 is busy

No blocking issue was established. The launcher recovery instruction is non-blocking because developers can run the CLI from source or build with an explicit platform target.

Fix with agent prompt
### Issue 1
cli.cjs:16
On a fresh checkout, `bun run build:cli` creates `dist/token-tracker`, but `cli.cjs` looks for a platform-specific file such as `dist/token-tracker-linux-x64`. Following the new error message leaves the launcher reporting the same missing binary. This is a non-blocking recovery-instruction problem; running the CLI from source remains available.

Recommend `bun run build:cli bun-${process.platform}-${process.arch}` instead, or make the default build filename match the launcher. Update the matching advice in `README.md` and `CONTRIBUTING.md` too.

T-Rex evidence

Evidence from the check

  • The Python harness creates an isolated head checkout and executes the suggested recovery and explicit-target control, making the tested flow reproducible.

Command output from the check

  • Running launcher help without native binaries exits 1 and recommends the default build command, establishing the starting condition.

Command output from the check

  • The suggested build succeeds but launcher help still exits 1, and the file listing shows the unsuffixed executable, confirming the advice leaves the launcher broken.

Command output from the check

  • Building with bun-linux-x64 produces the expected executable and launcher help exits 0, isolating the filename mismatch.

Command output from the check

  • The first run captures the broken suggested recovery and successful control but fails a test-only help-heading assertion, which was corrected before rerunning.

Command output from the check

  • The final harness run captures every command and exit code and passes all assertions, confirming the finding while preserving tracked source.

Summary

This PR replaces private-machine URLs with local setup examples and adds contributor instructions.

  • Fresh checkouts use local addresses throughout the setup guide.
  • The dev server accepts local addresses and Tailscale names.
  • The CLI points checkout users to the right way to run it.
  • Contributors can follow the same setup and checks as CI.

Keeping port 5173 fixed is intentional: bmdavis419 states that the server “keeps port 5173.”

The launcher advice is a non-blocking usability issue. No blocking issue was established, so this review does not require holding the merge.

📝 Walkthrough

The changes update local dashboard configuration and setup guidance, clarify CLI messages, set the benchmark’s local default URL, and document contributor setup and verification steps.

Changes: Dashboard and contributor setup

Layer / File(s) Summary
Local dashboard setup
README.md, vite.config.ts
The README documents development and production dashboard startup. Vite server and preview configuration now allow .ts.net hosts, and the server requires port 5173.
CLI and self-hosted usage
cli.cjs, src/cli/app.ts, README.md
The CLI reports whether a missing binary is for an unsupported platform or architecture, or a supported combination. The status and disconnect commands have descriptions. The README updates pairing, package-launch, download, and Tailscale deployment instructions.
Benchmark defaults and examples
scripts/benchmark-rpc.ts, README.md, PERFORMANCE.md
The benchmark defaults to http://127.0.0.1:8787; an explicit URL still takes precedence. The benchmark examples use the local URL.
Contributor verification
CONTRIBUTING.md, .github/workflows/verify.yml, README.md
Contributor guidance now covers environment requirements, development, and pull-request checks. The workflow pins voidzero-dev/setup-vp to v1.21.2 and names its existing steps. The README describes the checks run by bun run check and bun run test.

Pass the target to build:cli.

build:cli runs without a target, so scripts/build-cli.ts writes dist/token-tracker. cli.cjs searches for dist/token-tracker-${process.platform}-${process.arch}. The documented command can therefore leave the launcher unable to find the binary.

Use the matching target, such as:

bun scripts/build-cli.ts bun-linux-x64

Use bun-linux-arm64, bun-darwin-x64, or bun-darwin-arm64 as applicable.
