Summary

On a CPU server the wait after release grows with the take: Parakeet only starts once the recording is sealed, and a whole-take pass gets slower per second as takes get longer. This adds an opt-in --stream-speech flag (INLAY_STREAM_SPEECH=1) that recognizes finished speech while the take is still uploading, so only the last few seconds are left after release.

  • While audio uploads, Silero scores each new second. Once 8 s are waiting, the server cuts at the next pause that is at least as long as the speaker's median pause in that stretch, so there is no fixed pause length.
  • Each piece is recognized with 4 s of audio before it and 2 s after it as context, keeping only the piece's own words.
  • On release only the audio after the last cut is recognized, then the pieces are joined.
  • Sealed takes get the speech helper before streamed pieces. If a piece fails, streaming stops for that take and the sealed take recognizes whatever the pieces did not cover.
  • Speech helper: new speech request (per-window Silero probabilities) and optional keepFrom/keepUntil on transcribe.
  • No API or client changes. For streamed takes speech.processingSeconds counts only the wait after release, which is what the app shows.

Numbers

Ryzen 5 5600G, CPU, Parakeet v3 q8. Real takes replayed through the HTTP API at speaking pace (0.25 s chunks), old and new image side by side:

Take Whole take, after release Streamed, after release
37 s 3.9 s 1.3 s
55 s 6.5 s 1.0 s
81 s 10.4 s 1.2 s
148 s 21.7 s 1.8 s

Speech detection costs about 4 ms of CPU per second of audio.

Trade-off

Pieces lose whole-take context. Across 13 real takes (accented, spontaneous English) about 5% of words differed from a whole-take pass, ignoring fillers and stutters. Checking the differences by hand, the whole-take pass was right more often, mostly on names and jargon. Shorter pieces were worse (3 s minimum: 7.2%, 5 s: 6.4%) for a few tenths of a second saved, and 15 s of context was no better than 4 s while once dropping a sentence. That is why it is off by default.

Verification

  • bun run check, bun run lint and bun run fmt:check pass.
  • Built the Linux CPU helper and server with the Dockerfile (--target cpu).
  • Replayed real recordings at speaking pace against isolated containers, and against my own server with proofreading on.
  • Not verified: the Metal helper build and Inlay Dev on macOS with computer use, since I only run the server on Linux.

Note

Add streaming speech recognition for takes during upload

  • New --stream-speech option (or INLAY_STREAM_SPEECH=1) starts background speech recognition while a take uploads. The server scores Silero speech probabilities every 32 ms window, detects natural pauses, and commits recognized text pieces at qualifying pauses with 2 seconds of lookahead.
  • On release, final recognition reuses committed pieces and transcribes only the remaining tail with 4 seconds of preceding context; takes without streamed pieces use the existing whole-file path (see generation-service.ts).
  • The engine adds a detectSpeech request type and optional keepFrom/keepUntil bounds on transcription, so the engine recognizes full audio but returns only words starting in the kept range (see worker.cpp).
  • Sealed-take recognition takes priority over queued streaming work through the new SpeechSlot scheduler, so the speech backend runs one task at a time.
  • Behavioral Change: unknown request types to the engine now return an error instead of falling through to the transcription handler; streaming failures close the stream but do not block final sealed recognition.

The remaining performance and timing-reporting concerns are non-blocking; no blocking merge-safety issue is established.

Fix with agent prompt
### Issue 1
Server/src/generation-service.ts:1251
`recognize` waits for `stream.task` before submitting the finished take's urgent request. When that task is queued behind other takes' streamed pieces, those pieces run first. Users on a shared server can therefore wait for unfinished recordings before their completed take gets recognized.

Skip or remove queued streaming work when a take seals. Only wait for a piece that has actually started.

### Issue 2
Server/src/generation-service.ts:1281-1287
`processingSeconds` misses time spent waiting for the speech slot. `waited` is measured before `transcribe` enters that queue, while the helper's returned time counts only recognition. The no-pieces branch also skips the earlier wait for `stream.task`. Users can see a short processing time after waiting several seconds for another recording.

Measure the full elapsed time after recognition finishes for streamed takes.

T-Rex evidence

Evidence from the check

Command output from the check

  • The base service was launched and queried for health and generation creation, producing 200 OK with readiness false and 503 Service Unavailable; inference could not begin.

Command output from the check

  • The head service was launched with streaming enabled and the real CPU helper, then queried at the same endpoints, producing the same missing-model rejection; the claimed scheduling path remained unreachable.

Evidence from the check

  • The executed shell source builds the base helper, launches each real coordinator, and requests health and recording admission without substituting inference, making the blocked comparison reproducible.

Summary

Adds opt-in speech recognition while recordings upload.

  • The server recognizes speech while a take is uploading.
  • The speech helper returns pause scores and time-limited transcripts.

T-Rex validation blocked

Both real-service checks stopped before recording upload or recognition because the configured Parakeet model file, ggml-parakeet-tdt-0.6b-v3-f16.bin, was missing. Recording creation returned HTTP 503. The scheduling and timing behaviors could not be exercised.

Parakeet recognizes each piece with 4 s of audio before and 2 s after as context, keeping only the piece's own words. On release only the audio after the last cut is left.
- Replaying real takes at speaking pace on a Ryzen 5600G (CPU, q8): the wait after release went from 3.9/6.5/10.4/21.7 s to 1.3/1.0/1.2/1.8 s for 37/55/81/148 s takes. Speech detection costs about 4 ms of CPU per second of audio.
- Trade-off: pieces lose whole-take context. On 13 real takes about 5% of words differed from a whole-take pass, and hand-checking showed the whole-take pass right more often (mostly names and jargon). Shorter pieces (3–5 s) were worse still, so the flag stays off by default.
- The speech helper gains a `speech` request (per-window Silero probabilities) and optional `keepFrom`/`keepUntil` on `transcribe`. Sealed takes get the helper before streamed pieces. Restarts, cancellation, and helper failures fall back to recognizing whatever the pieces did not cover.
- `speech.processingSeconds` for a streamed take counts only the wait after release, matching what the app shows.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The inference worker now supports bounded transcription and speech detection. The server can use speech probabilities to select pauses and recognize pieces during uploads when streaming is enabled. Final processing combines completed pieces with transcription of the remaining audio.

With speech streaming enabled, cancelling an upload can delay recognition of another sealed take. Wire cancellation into the helper requests before merging if that delay is unacceptable.

Abort streamed inference when the stream closes.

When cleanPartial closes a receiving stream, the active advanceStream task continues because both helper calls receive no AbortSignal. SpeechSlot remains busy until the request returns or reaches its timeout. An urgent sealed-take request must wait for that slot, so cancellation can delay recognition of another take.

Add a controller to SpeechStream, abort it in cleanPartial, and pass its signal to both inference calls.

P2 Displayed wait is too short

processingSeconds misses time spent waiting for the speech slot. waited is measured before transcribe enters that queue, while the helper's returned time counts only recognition. The no-pieces branch also skips the earlier wait for stream.task. Users can see a short processing time after waiting several seconds for another recording.

Measure the full elapsed time after recognition finishes for streamed takes.
