EDIT: I'M DEFERRING THIS UNTIL AFTER PR #521 HAS BEEN MERGED -- I MAY HAVE INDEPENDENTLY ADDRESSED THE SAME WARNINGS IN THAT PR (AND THERE WILL BE MERGE CONFLICTS)
This PR is extremely simple: I simply addressed some warnings about unused variables
I would be happy to delete the lines that I have commented out (I've left them in place for now in case they were important)
