## Summary - add a fail-closed `scripts/release refs` preflight for candidate tags - reject conflicting local or remote v2 refs before any real publication path - enforce SemVer/monotonic version, embedded release metadata, and changelog invariants in repository validation - document the release preflight and remove the withdrawn `v2.0.0` local tag from this checkout after confirming origin has no matching ref ## Why The merged #241 foundation established the v2 release line but deliberately left provenance, tag/ref, and invariant enforcement open. A stale local `v2.0.0` ref remained from the withdrawn July 2026 attempt, while the remote correctly had no such tag. Release tooling must fail closed rather than risk retagging or silently accepting conflicting metadata. ## Validation - `./tests/validate.sh` (495 BATS cases, Bash smoke checks, examples) - `bats tests/release.bats` (18 cases) - `tests/bash-42-release-smoke.sh` - `shellcheck --severity=error scripts/release tests/validate.sh tests/bash-42-release-smoke.sh tests/release.bats` - `git diff --check` - real-origin `scripts/release refs --version 2.0.0` Refs #215
