Adds an MCP server to the gateway so agents in Cursor, Claude Code, and other MCP clients can use Caspian by URL alone - no package install. Stage 1 of the MCP rollout.

What

  • server/src/comm_gateway/mcp.py: the MCP server, built with the mcp v2 SDK (2026-07-28 stateless spec). A build_mcp(base_url=...) factory returns a Starlette app served over Streamable HTTP with stateless_http=True - no sessions, no initialize handshake; every request carries the project key as Authorization: Bearer comm_....
  • main.py: mounts the MCP app at /mcp and chains its lifespan into the gateway lifespan (the streamable-http session manager needs its task group running). Wrapped in try/except so MCP can never fail gateway boot.
  • server/pyproject.toml + uv.lock: adds the mcp dependency, lock regenerated with uv 0.12.5 (same pin as CI).

Surface

Tools: list_channels, list_connections, reply(message_id, text), send_message(connection_id, recipient, text)
Resource: caspian://conversations (stub for stage 2)
Prompt: triage_inbox

Each tool is a thin in-process call to the gateway's own /v1 REST routes with the caller's key, so auth, rate limits, and provider logic are reused, not duplicated.

Client config

{ "mcpServers": { "caspian": {
    "url": "https://api.trycaspianai.com/mcp",
    "headers": { "Authorization": "Bearer comm_..." } } } }

Verified

  • tools/list and tools/call round-trip against a live local gateway
  • bad key returns 401
  • ruff clean, full gateway test suite passes (root uv sync + uv run pytest, mirroring CI)

Not in this PR (later stages)

Real conversations resource, hosted mcp.trycaspianai.com + OAuth, subscriptions/listen for inbound, onboarding + SKILL.md "Connect via MCP" block.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The change adds MCP onboarding, channel connection, inbox, conversation, and messaging tools. The gateway mounts the MCP application at /mcp. SDK examples, install guidance, API messages, and validation now use the current API.

Changes

MCP onboarding and gateway integration

Layer / File(s) Summary
MCP onboarding and channel connection flow
server/pyproject.toml, server/src/comm_gateway/mcp.py
The project adds mcp>=2.0.0. The MCP server adds keyless sandbox onboarding, client configuration output, and channel-specific connection setup.
MCP messaging and transport capabilities
server/src/comm_gateway/mcp.py
The server exposes channel and connection listing, inbox retrieval, conversation reading, replies, new-message sending, the triage_inbox prompt, and DNS-rebinding protection.
Gateway startup and mounting
server/src/comm_gateway/main.py
The gateway builds the MCP application with settings.public_base_url, enters its lifespan when available, and mounts it at /mcp. Construction failures disable MCP without stopping gateway startup.
Current SDK guidance and validation
server/README.md, server/src/comm_gateway/channel_guides.py, server/src/comm_gateway/routes/api.py, server/src/comm_gateway/routes/skill.py, server/tests/test_channel_guides.py
Examples, channel guides, installation guidance, API error messages, and tests now reference the current Caspian SDK API.

Estimated code review effort: 3 (Moderate) | ~20 minutes

Merge Risk: 🟠 High · up to 4510b

The new MCP endpoint can mishandle invalid credentials, block gateway startup when MCP initialization fails, share rate limits across callers, omit newer inbox messages, reject valid local requests, and present inaccurate channel or setup information. These concrete security, availability, and correctness risks should be addressed before merging.

Isolate MCP lifespan failures and always stop background services.

The try block only isolates build_mcp(). If mcp_app.router.lifespan_context() fails while it enters, the exception occurs before yield. The gateway then fails to start.

The inline worker and listeners already started on this path. Their stop events are not set because cleanup is after yield.

Catch MCP lifespan-entry failures separately. Use finally for worker and listener cleanup. Keep the gateway available when MCP startup fails.

Python MCP SDK MCPServer streamable_http_app stateless_http authentication middleware Context headers tools/list resources/list prompts/list HTTP 401

💡 Result:

In the Python MCP SDK, the streamable-http transport provides a production-ready HTTP server for MCP, while stateless_http serves as a configuration flag to control session behavior [1][2]. Streamable HTTP and Stateless Configuration The streamable_http_app() method returns a Starlette ASGI application that can be run as a standalone server or mounted into an existing web framework [3]. The stateless_http=True option disables session tracking [1]. As of the 2026-07-28 specification, the modern MCP path is stateless by construction [2][4]. The stateless_http flag primarily acts as a legacy-compatibility knob; modern requests are routed and answered before this flag is evaluated [2]. Authentication and Middleware Authentication is handled via HTTP middleware available on streamable-http transports [5][6]. - Middleware: The SDK includes bearer_auth middleware that validates Authorization headers [7][8]. - Mechanism: When a request lacks a valid token, the server returns an HTTP 401 Unauthorized response, including a WWW-Authenticate header [5][6]. This header provides a resource_metadata URL, enabling automated discovery of OAuth 2.1 protected resource metadata (RFC 9728) [5][6]. - Usage: AuthSettings and a TokenVerifier are configured together [5]. Once authenticated, the middleware stores user context in a request-scoped variable, which is accessible to tool, resource, and prompt handlers [5][6]. Accessing Context and Headers To access raw HTTP request headers within your MCP tool or handler logic: 1. When using streamable-http, the request context is accessible via the Context object provided to your handlers [9]. 2. You can retrieve headers using context.request_context.request.headers [9]. 3. For authorization-specific data, the SDK provides get_access_token() to retrieve authenticated user information directly from the request state [5][9]. If you are building a custom ASGI wrapper, ensure the host app's lifespan enters mcp.session_manager.run() to avoid request failures [3]. Additionally, when using browser-based clients, you must wrap your app with CORSMiddleware and expose the Mcp-Session-Id header (if using legacy sessions) [10][3].

Authenticate /mcp before protocol dispatch.

_key() runs only through tool handlers. Discovery and resource or prompt requests bypass API-key validation. An invalid key also becomes an MCP error after the gateway returns 401; /mcp does not return 401. Add an ASGI or MCP authentication layer that verifies the key before dispatch and returns 401 for missing or invalid keys.

Configure transport_security for the public Caddy host. The SDK defaults to localhost-only host and origin checks, which can reject public requests with 421.

Describe list_channels as provider capability data.

/v1/channels returns configured providers, capabilities, required credentials, and setup guides. It does not return this project's active connections (server/src/comm_gateway/routes/api.py:1086-1110). The current description says channels are connected and ready. This can cause the client to select a channel without an active connection.

State that this tool lists configured capabilities. Direct clients to list_connections for active connection IDs.

Preserve the original client identity for sandbox rate limits.

_gw and get_started create a second HTTP request to base_url and forward only Authorization. The /v1/projects/sandbox route keys its rate limit with client_ip(request), so every MCP caller is observed as the gateway process instead of the original caller. One client's sandbox request can consume the quota for all MCP clients.

Use a context-aware in-process adapter, or propagate trusted client identity through the internal boundary. Do not trust an arbitrary client-supplied forwarding header. Add a test with two distinct MCP client addresses.

Require public_base_url for remote onboarding

When public_url is empty, get_started returns base_url, which defaults to http://127.0.0.1:8000/mcp. Remote clients cannot use this address. Require settings.public_base_url for public deployments, or return local-only configuration when it is unset.

Return HTTP 401 for invalid credentials at the MCP boundary.

_key runs only inside tool handlers. For an invalid key, _gw receives the REST 401 and raises ValueError. The MCP SDK converts ordinary tool exceptions into a successful tool result with is_error=True, so the outer MCP request is not 401. (github.com)

tools/list, prompts, and resources also bypass _key. Keep get_started as the deliberate keyless bootstrap, but reject other credentialed operations at the protocol or HTTP boundary with an actual 401. This remains the authentication finding from the previous review.

Verify this against the locked mcp==2.0.0 with an invalid-key tools/call probe.

Reject the stale client.on_message( decorator.

The stale-pattern list omits the removed @client.on_message API. A future setup guide could retain that decorator and still pass this test. Add "client.on_message(" to the rejected patterns.
