OpenEngine gRPC serving replaces the OpenAI HTTP server, so the existing Prometheus endpoint is not started. This adds a separate HTTP /prometheus/metrics listener for OpenEngine and reuses the shared MetricsCollector, metric names, labels, and histogram configuration.
Enablement follows HTTP: return_perf_metrics: true enables collection and export, and perf_metrics_output_dir also opts into collection without enabling HTTP response metrics. The metrics listener defaults to port 8001 and inherits --host; the new host/port options only override its address. enable_iter_perf_stats remains independent.
Aggregate frontend request metrics through an isolated serving-group registry; only the engine owner serves HTTP and drains iteration statistics.
Record one bounded outcome per Generate RPC, separately from per-output-candidate metrics.
Keep scraping and blocking statistics reads off the gRPC serving loop, and preserve shutdown ordering for pending reads.
Keep metrics-disabled requests allocation-free and leave KV-event publishing and routing-load controls independent.
Monitoring tools scrape each service directly. Metrics endpoint discovery through GetServerInfo is deferred; configure the engine metrics host, port, and /prometheus/metrics path explicitly.
Test Coverage
Latest upstream merge: 201 OpenEngine tests passed with pytest-threadleak 0.5.0 enabled on gRPC 1.84. The CI-reported cleanup case failed before the fix; all four outcome cases pass after explicitly collecting gRPC transport cycles following loop shutdown. Leak detection remains enabled. The capability-conformance module was excluded because its external test data is unavailable in this local harness.
308 tests passed, 2 pre-existing RPC tests skipped across the OpenEngine, shared collector, CLI stability, and selected RPC suites. After the final atomic-admission change, a fresh RPC pass also completed: 24 passed, 2 skipped.
Real gRPC/HTTP regression coverage includes candidate/token counts, cancellation, stalled consumers, formatter errors, engine-failure attribution, frontend aggregation, occupied ports, directory isolation, and pending-read cleanup. HTTP route registration verifies collection enablement separately from response-header opt-in.
Review regressions cover unanswered and queued stats calls, deadlines in both executor variants, cancellation during cleanup, pre-submission abort, reserve failure, preservation of an existing rejection, and bracketed IPv6 binding. Reserve failures remain UNAVAILABLE/unavailable; engine-submission coordination errors remain INTERNAL/engine_error.
All applicable upstream pre-commit checks passed.
Two fresh independent read-only code-quality reviews found no actionable issues.
Local real-GPU HTTP/OpenEngine comparison
The full-collection comparison was repeated successfully after the shutdown and accounting fixes.
Passed on NVIDIA RTX 5880 Ada with Qwen3-0.6B using this PR's serving sources over the native runtime noted below. Both protocols used identical token inputs and engine configuration, tested with request-only collection and full request/iteration collection. Each of the four arms ran 14 measured requests (12 single-output, 2 double-output) after 2 warmup requests, at concurrency 2; HTTP included streaming and non-streaming requests.
Each arm recorded exactly 16 successful candidates, 1,792 prompt tokens, 512 generated tokens, and 16 E2E/TTFT histogram observations. All populated histogram observation counts matched between protocols.
Full collection recorded 16 engine completions in each protocol. OpenEngine separately recorded exactly 14 completed Generate RPC outcomes, with no exporter errors.
Actual Prometheus 3.5.0 scraping every second returned the exact cumulative success count for all four arms.
The 15 request-only / 45 full-collection shared families matched in type, histogram buckets, and label values after excluding HTTP's pid gauge label. OpenEngine intentionally omits pid on owner-written gauges and adds the RPC-outcome family.
This short shared-GPU run validates accounting and export; it does not establish production performance overhead. Nonzero cache reuse, speculative decoding, disaggregated serving, and multiple frontends were not qualified by this comparison.
Validation used nvcr.io/nvidia/tensorrt-llm/release:1.4.0a0.dev202610180820 with the current Python serving sources overlaid. The real-model capability-conformance module was excluded because its test-data dependency is unavailable. A matching native build, full upstream CI, and production performance qualification have not been run and remain validation limits for this review.
Promotion-scan dependency fix
Three reported filelock CVEs affect 4.1.0–4.2.0; CVE-2026-112940 affects 3.20.4–4.2.0. Runtime requirements now select patched filelock>=4.2.1 on Python 3.11+ and unaffected filelock==3.20.3 on Python 3.10, which cannot install 4.2.1. The existing scan generator targets Python 3.10, so its root Poetry artifacts were refreshed to 3.20.3 using Poetry 2.5.1. No unrelated dependency metadata changed.
Both Python-version branches resolve successfully. The patched package (4.2.4 selected locally) satisfies installed Torch/Hugging Face dependency constraints and passed a real cross-process TRT-LLM cache-lock check. Poetry lock validation and repository pre-commit checks passed. The upstream vulnerability scan passed after this fix.
PR Checklist
Documentation and CPU test-list registration updated.
API-compatible CLI additions; no protocol changes. Existing filelock dependency explicitly constrained for the reported CVEs.
Relevant tests and repository pre-commit checks passed.

Dev Engineer Review
OpenEngine adds a separate HTTP /prometheus/metrics listener. It defaults to port 8001 and inherits the server host unless the new host and port options override it. The CLI limits these options to OpenEngine gRPC and rejects a metrics port that matches the inference port.
Request metrics use the shared MetricsCollector and a serving-group registry. Collection is enabled by return_perf_metrics or perf_metrics_output_dir; response metrics are exposed only when return_perf_metrics is enabled. enable_iter_perf_stats remains independent.
The change adds per-RPC outcome tracking, multiprocess directory management, and listener and collection lifecycle handling. It also changes RPC client shutdown and statistics-call timeouts.
Review severity counts are unavailable. The supplied objectives report 308 tests passed and 2 pre-existing RPC tests skipped, plus a later RPC run with 24 passed and 2 skipped. They also report applicable pre-commit checks passed. Full upstream CI, a matching native build, and production performance qualification were not run. Real-model capability-conformance tests were excluded because test data was unavailable.
QA Engineer Review
Three OpenEngine unit-test files changed, and a new metrics test was added to the CPU CI test list. The tests cover metrics configuration, request outcomes, multiprocess isolation, listener lifecycle, collection modes, and RPC errors, cancellation, and timeouts. The supplied evidence does not establish test function or test ID names. Coverage verdict: needs follow-up, because full upstream CI and real-model capability conformance were not run.

OpenEngine metrics
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Shared metrics configuration and registry tensorrt_llm/serve/_perf_metrics_config.py, tensorrt_llm/metrics/collector.py, tensorrt_llm/serve/openai_server.py
A shared resolver determines when request metrics are collected and response metrics are exposed. MetricsCollector accepts a registry and gauge multiprocess mode and builds configuration metrics from model arguments. The OpenAI server uses the shared collector setup.
OpenEngine metrics storage and exporter tensorrt_llm/grpc/openengine/metrics.py
MetricsDirectory manages multiprocess storage for owners and attached frontends. OpenEngineMetrics serves /prometheus/metrics, collects iteration statistics when enabled, checks listener health, and stops collection and serving during cleanup.
OpenEngine request instrumentation and serving integration tensorrt_llm/grpc/openengine/servicer.py, tensorrt_llm/grpc/openengine/server.py, tensorrt_llm/commands/serve.py
The gRPC servicer records request phases and outcomes. The launcher and CLI accept metrics host and port options, reject unsupported configurations, and use port 8001 by default. Server startup, supervision, and cleanup manage the metrics lifecycle.
Metrics behavior, tests, and documentation tests/unittest/grpc/openengine/*, tests/unittest/api_stability/references/trtllm_serve_cli.yaml, tests/integration/test_lists/test-db/l0_cpu.yml, tensorrt_llm/grpc/openengine/README.md

Generate maps a CoordinationError from frontend.reserve() to UNAVAILABLE, and RequestMetrics records unavailable. Existing tests do not combine reservation failure with metrics. The existing coordination test raises CoordinationError from generate_async() and intentionally expects INTERNAL and engine_error.
Add a reserve-failure case in tests/unittest/grpc/openengine/test_servicer.py. Make the fake frontend raise CoordinationError, assert that the context aborts with UNAVAILABLE, and assert outcomes == [("aggregated", "unavailable")].
