Description

Follow-up to #20660. #19964, merged while #20660 was in review, made tensorrt_llm.serve a PEP 562 lazy package, and its __getattr__ lets an AttributeError raised while importing openai_server / openai_disagg_server escape as is. trtllm-serve reaches it at module level (tensorrt_llm/commands/serve.py: from tensorrt_llm.serve import OpenAIDisaggServer, OpenAIServer). With such a bug in a server module:

  • from tensorrt_llm.serve import OpenAIServer runs the module twice and fails with a bare cannot import name 'OpenAIServer', without the cause;
  • hasattr(tensorrt_llm.serve, "OpenAIServer") returns False and getattr(..., default) returns the default, hiding the bug.

This PR re-raises it as ImportError(..., name=__name__) from e, as the other lazily loaded packages do (#20606, #20660), and adds OpenAIServer and OpenAIDisaggServer to tests/unittest/others/test_lazy_getattr_errors.py.

No behavior change when the server modules import cleanly.

Test Coverage

  • tests/unittest/others/test_lazy_getattr_errors.py (cpu_only, runs in l0_cpu via unittest/others): the two new cases cover from ... import, attribute access, hasattr and getattr with a default.
  • Local run on A10 against a build of this branch, with the base tree using the same build: test_lazy_getattr_errors.py fails exactly the 8 new tensorrt_llm.serve cases on base and passes all 44 with this change; tests/unittest/llmapi/apps/test_serve_lazy_import.py, importing both server classes, and python3 -m tensorrt_llm.commands.serve --help pass with identical output on both trees.

Dev Engineer Review

tensorrt_llm.serve.__getattr__ now wraps an AttributeError raised during either server-module import in an ImportError chained to the original error. The change preserves AttributeError for unknown names and leaves successful import and attribute caching paths unchanged. No current review findings were supplied, so finding counts are unavailable.

QA Engineer Review

tests/unittest/others/test_lazy_getattr_errors.py adds two parametrized cases, one for each server export. The existing tests exercise from ... import, direct attribute access, hasattr, and getattr with a default; they also check that the original error is chained and that the target import is attempted once. No test-list entry was found under tests/integration/test_lists; this unit test does not require an integration test-list entry. Coverage verdict: sufficient for the added error-handling paths. Test execution results are not established by the supplied evidence.

Per-File QA Perspective

  • tensorrt_llm/serve/__init__.py: Verify that import-time AttributeError for either server module becomes a chained ImportError, while unknown names and successful imports retain their existing behavior.
  • tests/unittest/others/test_lazy_getattr_errors.py: Adds coverage for both lazy server exports across four access paths, including cause preservation and single-attempt behavior. No integration test-list entry applies.

…ported serve module raises AttributeError

tensorrt_llm.serve's PEP 562 __getattr__ let an AttributeError raised while
importing openai_server or openai_disagg_server escape as is. hasattr() and
getattr() with a default then reported the server class as missing, and
`from tensorrt_llm.serve import OpenAIServer` imported the module twice and
failed with a bare "cannot import name". Re-raise it as an ImportError chained
to the original error, as the other lazily loaded packages do, and add both
server names to test_lazy_getattr_errors.

Assert the translated ImportError metadata.

The tests check the exception type, cause, and import count, but not ImportError.name or the translated message. A regression that removes or changes these fields can pass every current case. Extend the shared helper and pass the case metadata to assert the complete contract.
