The sampler sizes the processed-logprob workspace for eligible generated-token rows. It selects raw logprobs separately and scatters processed and raw results to their destinations. The tiled raw-logprob path avoids a dense vocabulary-sized result.
Multi-beam requests remain eligible for logprob output but do not enter raw-logit gathering. Verify that beam-search values and mixed-request destinations remain correct. No public API changes are reported. No independent review findings or test-run results were supplied.
QA Engineer Review
tests/unittest/_torch/sampler/test_logits_logprobs.py adds coverage for selected raw-logprob values, ranks, top-k results, and batched sampling, including an active beam-search request. The file appears in tests/integration/test_lists/test-db/l0_a30.yml. No matching manual-QA list entry was found. The author reports 471 passing tests, but this result was not independently verified. Coverage is sufficient for the changed paths represented by these tests.

Description
Reduce sampler temporary-memory peaks when requests return logprobs. The existing workspace is sized by every logits row and the full vocabulary, including requests that do not need logprobs. A 256-row, 131072-token FP32 workspace alone occupies 128 MiB, although only sampled-token and top-k results are returned.
This PR includes two commits:
Size the dense workspace by processed-logprob token rows, accounting for draft lengths and excluding beam-search requests that use their own history.
Compute selected raw logprobs without a dense vocabulary-sized output. Tiled reductions compute normalization and sampled ranks; candidate selection uses tiled top-k or top-k directly on the existing logits. A shared scatter writes raw and processed results into the persistent store without duplicating mixed-batch indexing.
Processed-logprob normalization and beam-search history handling retain their existing semantics. Sampled ranks count strictly greater normalized values; equal-valued top-k candidates do not have a guaranteed token-ID order. There are no public API changes or new dependencies.
Performance and memory
B200, synthetic FP32 logits, vocabulary 131072, 256 requests; existing sampler_bench standard suite, 50 warmup iterations, 300 timed iterations, three alternating baseline/candidate rounds. Latency is the median of the three full-serial p50 measurements. Memory is the single-step peak allocation above pre-step live allocations, excluding input logits and persistent stores.
The baseline below is the allocation-only intermediate commit 40f1756071, not unmodified main. These numbers isolate the additional benefit of selected raw-logprob computation; both changes are included in this PR.
Requests
Extra peak memory, baseline -> final
Full-serial latency, baseline -> final
All raw, top-k=3
129.29 -> 0.30 MiB
3731.31 -> 3232.28 us (-13.37%)
Mixed none/raw/processed, top-k=3
213.01 -> 170.51 MiB
3541.74 -> 3416.34 us (-3.54%)
All raw, top-k=100
129.58 -> 1.67 MiB
14159.05 -> 13844.05 us (-2.22%)
The local matrix covers 24 batch/mode/logprob configurations, including sparse logprob requests, mixed sampling parameters, sample-only, full-serial and overlap execution. The largest observed latency increase in the final matrix was approximately 0.9%; these are local measurements, not a guarantee for every workload/GPU.
Follow-up kernel optimization
Commit 639a739b69 optimizes candidate selection using packed-key reductions for tiled top-k=3..8 and packed top-k for small vocabularies with k>=64. The store kernel is unchanged: warp-count tuning showed no consistent benefit.
Compared with the existing PR commit e6dea1ee, B200 CUDA-graph operator latency improved from 123.87 to 99.64 us (-19.6%) for 256 rows / vocabulary 131072 / top-3, and from 81.13 to 32.13 us (-60.4%) for 32 rows / vocabulary 4096 / top-100. These are isolated operator measurements, not full-sampler or full-model speedups.
The existing sampler benchmark covered 14 scenarios with 3 alternating A/B rounds, 50 warmup iterations, and 300 measured iterations. Full-sampler latency was largely unchanged: 13 of 14 scenarios were within -0.74% to +0.16%. Small-vocabulary top-100 full_serial initially increased 1.36%; an independent five-round repeat did not reproduce this (full_serial -0.37%, sample_only +0.32%). Peak temporary allocation was unchanged in every scenario.
Validation: 471 tests passed with no additional CI cases; 6 controlled mixed-request/beam/draft replay cases and 42 local-only edge combinations passed. All 49 paired benchmark snapshots had exact integer outputs and zero observed floating-point difference. Pre-commit and lightweight mypy passed. Validation reuses compatible runtime/native artifacts with the exact changed Python sampler; no full-model accuracy or performance claim is made.
Active beam-logprob review fix
Commit 67ea95c4a3 retains all raw-logprob requests in the request index list while keeping a separate single-beam list for reading raw logits. Active multi-beam requests now reach the sampled-token-ID scatter path; their logprob values still come from beam search. The exclusion also existed in the pre-PR baseline.
The existing singleton raw beam test now additionally exercises a streaming request that remains active after its first token, with its token-ID buffer poisoned to -1. It fails before the fix with a missing sampled-token logprob key and passes afterward; the original completed-request check remains. No pytest cases were added. All 471 tests passed, plus 20 existing beam cases rerun locally with requests kept active. Pre-commit and lightweight mypy passed. The dense raw buffer remains eliminated, and no Triton kernel changed in this fix.
471 cases passed: reuse the existing 470-case matrix with a workspace-capacity assertion, and add only one non-parameterized test function for the new kernel paths. No CI test-list expansion.
Six controlled mixed-sampling comparisons plus two context/decode comparisons passed: identical sampled tokens and ranks under replayed sampling outputs, with logprob tolerance checks. For matching sampled tokens in the benchmark snapshots, maximum absolute logprob difference was 5.72e-6 and ranks matched.
Pre-commit passed, including the lightweight mypy check over 17 sampler files. Commits have DCO sign-offs.
Validation limits: sampler-level validation used the exact changed sampler Python code in a 1.3.0rc25 container (PyTorch 2.12 development build, Triton 3.7), an adapter for older request bindings, and a compatible standalone fused-sampling extension whose relevant native sources were unchanged. This was not a full native rebuild of the checkout or end-to-end model accuracy validation. Uncontrolled stochastic fused sampling can vary between identical baseline runs; controlled replay separately checks the modified downstream processing.

Keep pre-translation token IDs for logprob selection.
A greedy request can enable both d2t translation and raw logprobs. sampling_resolution.py:144-149 enables raw logprobs for return_log_probs with LogprobMode.RAW, and the d2t guard does not exclude that combination.
apply_d2t mutates batch_next_tokens_cuda_int before the sampler returns. _unbatch_sampling_results scatters those translated IDs into new_tokens_cuda, and _process_logprobs later passes the gathered raw IDs to selected_raw_logprobs. The raw kernels use each ID as a direct offset into draft-vocabulary logits. A translated target ID can therefore produce an incorrect raw logprob or an out-of-bounds read.
Keep pre-translation IDs for all logprob selection, including the raw suffix, or perform logprob selection before apply_d2t. Apply translation only to IDs written to output storage, while preserving the existing output ordering.

Active beam-logprob review fix
Commit
67ea95c4a3retains all raw-logprob requests in the request index list while keeping a separate single-beam list for reading raw logits. Active multi-beam requests now reach the sampled-token-ID scatter path; their logprob values still come from beam search. The exclusion also existed in the pre-PR baseline.The existing singleton raw beam test now additionally exercises a streaming request that remains active after its first token, with its token-ID buffer poisoned to -1.
