  - **[opentype/unwanted_aat_tables]:** AAT is as legitimate as OpenType and Apple ships and actively develop AAT fonts. Such check belongs to the OpenType profile instead of the Universal profile. (issue #4991)

  - **[opentype/dsig]:** Reintroduce this check that had been recently deprecated. It is considered by users to be easier to disable this dedicated check, instead of having the DSIG table checking happen inside of the broader 'unwanted_tables' check. (issue #4990)

  - This file contains a translation map that can be useful to be read directly by humans and it is also used to implement a backwards compatibility mechanism to accept the old IDs.

  - All reporters are now listing which legacy check-IDs were used on the --checkid and --exclude-checkid options and instructing the users to update to the new naming scheme, because the old ones will be permanently deprecated in the next major release. (issue #4942)

  - **[caps_vertically_centered]:** Reenabled and corrected it. If possible, the uppercase glyphs should be vertically centered in the em box. (issues #4139 and #4274)

  - **[googlefonts/article/images]:** Missing image files are now reported at **FATAL** level. (issue #4848)
  - **[googlefonts/axes_match]:** Only run on variable fonts. This stops fontbakery producing an error on static fonts. (PR # #4863)

  - **DEPRECATED - [whitespace_glyphnames]:** This check lacked a solid enough rationale. We may want to substitute it in the future by a full AGL-compliance check, if needed. (issue #4851)

##  0.13.0a0 (2024-Sep-13)
### Noteworthy code-changes
  - **Profile owners,**  please take a look at the **pending_review** lists in your profile definitions. If you move them to **exclude_checks** it means you do not want the check in your profile. If you just remove from **pending_review**, then the check becomes effective in your profile. And if you do nothing, the checks still not reviewed will continue being automatically excluded from your profile.
  - This release adopts a new naming scheme for checks. We had reports of users getting confused by the meaning of the reverse domain names included as prefixes of check-IDs, such as **com.google.fonts**. The real meaning was that the organization identified by such domain was the first contributor of a given check implementation. But some users were confused thinking that it mean the check belong to that organization's vendor-specific profile.
  - Now profiles do not include that reverse domain prefix. And do not also have the `"/check/"` keywork anymore. As an example, **com.google.fonts/check/tabular_kerning** (on the Universal profile) is now simply called **tabular_kerning**
  - Also, there's been a large number of checks migrated among profiles. Mosly towards the Universal one.
  - The checks themselves also moved around in the code-repository, in an attempt to remove any resemblance of profile allocation within the **/Lib/fontbakery/checks/** directory, which should be seen as a general pool of check implementations. As much as possible, profile definition should happen inside **/Lib/fontbakery/profiles** instead.
  - The exception to this are the checks that are surely vendor-specific. All those were placed in sub-directories inside **Lib/fontbakery/checks/**, such as **Lib/fontbakery/checks/vendorspecific/microsoft/**.
  - As this is the **"a0" pre-release**, there may be additional migrations and renames of checks, before we make an actual **v0.13.0** release. Please open an issue if you have suggestions of better names or better profile allocations.

  - **[opentype/gdef_spacing_marks]:** Clarify log-message about glyphs that seem to be spacing. (issue #4824)

#### On the Universal profile
  - **[name/family_and_style_max_length"]:** Use nameID 16 (Typographic family name) to determine name length if it exists. (PR #4811)
  - **[typoascender_exceeds_Agrave]:** Downgrade from FAIL to WARN. (PR #4828 / issue #3170)

  - The **Shaping** and **Outline** profile were also removed and their checks migrated to the **Google Fonts** profile. As gfonts was already including those, and no other profile did so, there's no need to add experimental flags to these ones. (issue #4801)

  - **[com.typenetwork/check/varfont/axes_have_variation]:** Axes on a variable font must have variation. In other words min and max values need to be different. It’s common to find fonts with unnecesary axes added like `ital`. (PR #4260)

Font Bakery's mission is to collect font-bug knowledge publicly with "free as in freedom" code. Also, Font Bakery users have been either simply ignoring this third-party tool, or having headaches with installing it (we heard reports of tens of gigabytes and hours of downloading Apple tools just to have ftxvalidator available for this FontBakery check). In the past the reasoning for keeping a Font Bakery wrapper to ftxval was based on the fact that fonts will not install on MacOS if they do not pass ftxval checking routines. But the onboarders on Google Fonts reported that they've never faced that kind of problem, so we're now making the bold move of completely removing the wrapper-check since we believe our collection of FB checks are good enough to make sure fonts are valid for the MacOS font-installer.
